Music For Animal Cafes

4/5

A relaxing lounge album with heavy pico-pop influence. Think Nintendo wii music. Think early Capsule. Music For Animal Cafes is idyllic background music for chillin out, accompanying daily chores, or even…cafes, one might think!

Chat au chocolat, Planarian Cut, Music For Animal Cafes
9Brain Vacation
Old Feelings

4/5

At a brisk 19 minutes, Old Feelings is a fun take on emo and pop-punk tropes filled with hooks and a raucous energy born from the anxiety of trying to figuring It out, and bettering yourself. All killer, no filler.

Searchin’, Red Rover, Silver Spoon
8Mitski
The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We

4.1/5

Her songwriting chops feel very on display here. Orienting the sound around guitars adds a very folksy, almost americana vibe on some tracks like Heaven. It’s vaguely psychedelic, vaguely orchestral. I think she figured out how to end a lot of the songs proper on this one.

The Deal, Bug Like An Angel, My Love Mine All Mine, I Don’t Like My Mind, I Love Me After You
7SKECH185
He Left Nothing for the Swim Back

4.2/5

There's a definite nod to Death Grips on one of these tracks, so I don't feel bad about making the comparison - Jeff Markey provides some insane beats that use space and silence to incredible effect and SKECH185 lays down some aggressively delivered, hard-hitting bars over every single one.

Badly Drawn Hero, Nights and Weekends, Western Automatic Music
6Billy Woods and Kenny Segal
Maps

4.3/5

Billy Woods shows up twice on my end-of list and it’s because the way he contorts syllables like they were pretzels is an absolute treat. Kenny Segal provides the backing to a world tour level rap extravaganza, and the friends we meet along the way go toe-to-toe with the main poet on display.

every victory pyrrhic, every every live show forget the lyric

Soundcheck, Rapper Weed, Year Zero, Waiting Around, NYC Tapwater
5Young Fathers
Heavy Heavy

4.3/5

The most anthemic sounding thing you’ll hear all year, Heavy Heavy is the sound of the weight of the world brushed off of your shoulders like it were nothing. This is foot-stomping, clapping, hollering music - gospel invoking you to speak in tongue, to dance like you’re possessed. I let Heavy Heavy in with a wicked grin.

I Saw, Holy Moly, Drum, Be Your Lady
4The Go! Team
Get Up Sequences Part Two

4.4/5

A more than fine offering from Ian Parton and his crew of noisemakers, Part Two ever-so-slightly expands on the sounds the Team’s been exploring on Semicircle and Part One. Steel pan, gang vocals, flutes, and more genre-hopping than usual makes this album my favorite from The Go! Team, a band over 20 years into their career.

Baby, Train Song, Look Away Look Away, Whammy-O, Gemini
3JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown
Scaring the Hoes

4.5/5

hands down the most creative beats of the 2020s so far. Danny Brown bars are funny, Peggy bars are Peggy bars

Shut Yo Bitch Ass Up/Muddy Waters, Fentanyl Tester, Lean Beef Patty, Burfict! God Loves You, Where Ya Get Ya Coke From
2Caroline Polachek
Desire, I Want To Turn Into You

4.5/5

This would’ve been number one per my 5/5 review, but I couldn’t shake how crass it is to dedicate a song to someone who fell off a balcony and have the lyrics ‘look over the edge, but not too far’ playing over and over in the background

Welcome To My Island, Fly To You, Blood and Butter, Crude Drawing Of An Angel, Sunset
1Geese
3D Country

4.6/5

With reckless abandon, post-punk wonders Geese jump deftly from one sonic palette to the next and have a damn good time doing it. Theatrical vocals, blues rock jams, hooks for days, and solid grooves for its entire runtime. 3D Country’s a winner.

Mysterious Love, Crusades, Cowboy Nudes, 3D Country, I See Myself, 2122, St. Elmo
