RYM > as a site, take that

theBoneyKing 08.06.17	I love this place, despite its flaws. Most users are cool, even if my taste doesn't quite fit with that of the general site population most of the time. I like how the site encourages professional-style reviews - unlike sites like RYM. I don't love how the database and charts work here (though I appreciate how easy it is to add stuff to the database), but that's not really what I come here for primarily, at least not anymore. At this point I use both Sputnik and RYM with equal frequency and I believe RYM's database system and charts are vastly superior to Sput's, but (sappy as it sounds) Sput holds the deeper place in my heart for the closer-knit community aspects.

Kimm 08.06.17	It's a lot different from when I started using the site (I want to say around seven or eight years ago.?) Different users = a different dynamic, and after taking such a long hiatus, it almost feels like being a new user all over again, but with a less dramatic entrance. Mostly now I just love using the site to get an overview of new-to-me music, finding out which bands may be similar to bands or artists I already like and reading reviews to get new perspectives on albums or pick up on things that I may have missed.

minty901 08.06.17	General purpose of the site is excellent. I think the site's organisation and code-base could use an overhaul as its quite outdated. I'd like for things like split EPs to be handled better for example, by letting you attribute albums to multiple artists. I'm currently in the process of creating a "new version of sputnik" as a hobby and to flex my web development ability, but since I'm not actually involved with this website's development, I'll probably not do anything with it. Unless the sputnik people show an interest in using my code.

Nomos 08.06.17	I think I've been here for close to 9 years now? It's the last thing that resembles a forum that I still visit. Except for the ACTUAL form here. In terms of just speaking to people on a regular basis who are technically strangers. From ~2000-2009 I obsessively visited so many phpBB forums, moderated view, but those went to the wayside when new social media took over and I lost the spare time. I also dropped a lot of hobbies these forums centered around. But in the past 10 years my life has almost come to revolve around music. Having never been huge into music beyond whatever was on the radio I was in high school, I came across the front-page review for Cynic's Traced in Air on Sputnik when I was in college, and this happened at a time in my life where I was really figuring out who I was and trying to change myself for the better. Been down the rabbit hole of discovering music here for almost a decade and I've loved every minute of it. Most of my free time now is spent actively searching-out new artists or genres. I start most nights by smoking a bowl and immersing myself in music and savoring new finds. Appreciating mixing, production, melodies, etc. Not intended to sound like a pretentious turd, but, I mean, it just makes me so fundamentally happy to have the pleasure to appreciate passionate people's art. I guess drugs helped this along too, but it was a permanent change in me for the better. So I appreciate this site more than any other on the internet. It reminds me of a time when I was a much less interesting person, and a lot angrier, and more confused, and reminds me of how far I've come since then, how much my life has changed, and of the thing in life that makes me the happiest (beyond my fiance!), which is music. I don't even know a lot of your names. But I remember avatars. So it always sucks when people change their's because then it's like they've vanished in my eyes. I'm good with some names though. The site itself is slightly archaic in some ways, but only because it ain't broke. I wish you could load new pages of comments as you scrolled down instead of loading new pages. I wish trying to type text-based emoji's worked, instead of whatever happens now, which appears to be the site trying to turn them into an emoji, but it just being a broken image link. And the servers. Because sometimes it's a bummer to wait for 10 minutes for the front page to load.

I agree with two of these points, not the "less general music discussion" part though. I think theres more of it. I see a lot more civil discussion about music than i did years ago. I think people are more willing to share their opinions now because theres less of the "your opinion is wrong and retarded" back and forths.

Some of the users are absolute cancer but there's enough decent people on that I'll be genuinely sad when this site inevitably bites the dust lest it gets with the times and addresses some its rather serious issues/shortcomings.

The influx of good writers into the site has been really good and also the musical diversity of the site seems to have expanded because of it which is always a good thing. I attempted to write a bit myself but the long and short is i'm just a bad writer, but some of the reviews as of late have really spurred me to go and check out stuff that i may have otherwise overlooked which is a testament to how good some of the people on here are.

It's fun to write reviews when I actually get the motivation to do so. I still occasionally still use it for music exploration, but otherwise this site is mostly not for me anymore. I definitely have some good memories on here from when I used to be more active though.

Otherwise, it's a very unique community, and, over the past year or so, I haven't found any other website that's as connected, relatable, or, most importantly of all, fun. I understand that music discussion forums aren't all fun and careless as Sputnik has a sense of professionalism in their reviews and news(and quite a good one at that), but that professionalism doesn't really overtake the humbleness and relatability of the staff and contributors involved. Also, am I the only person who thinks trolling isn't really a problem here? I might looking in the wrong places or something, but trolling hasn't really bothered me here all that much.

Yeah, the layout is kind of aged and the servers are about as good as soggy cheerios but you can have an honest discussion about any form of music here. This is also the only music site i've came upon where music isn't always the primary focus and you can really just release to a bunch of bros willing to help you out. At the end of the day there are only 3 things I don't like about this site-Servers, political rants in the community thread, and a user named BLOON. Come out and fite me boi

Xenorazr 08.07.17	I like Sputnik. I feel it's a niche place and that the long-time users are a small but occasionally tight-nit crowd. The worst part is definitely the random crashes, which I'll admit are part of what discourage me from being on here as often (instability is often a deal-breaker for me), but the discussion of music and having a platform to share thoughts on music is often what keeps me coming back, regardless of how consistent that may be.

Voivod 07.07.18	Before embarking to Sputnik 9 years ago, I didn't think there would be a truly functional site where ALL music genres and their respective fanbase, could co-exist in civility, because make no mistake, it's a harmonious symbiosis, as far as I'm concerned. So there's that, Sputnik's first and foremost breakthrough. Site server crashes were a major hiccup indeed, but it's been quite a while since they stopped, so there's that too. Site updates are eloquent and methodical, ergo they largely go unnoticed most of the time, which is good, because UX should be improved at a non-disruptive pace. Being here for so long, generations of users come and "go" (they never really do ;-)), which is a good and a bad thing at once. As for the community, the vast majority of people I interact with, are reserved and cordial, and that helped a lot in my perennial research of new and interesting music in the underground. Sooo... That's my two cents on the matter.

I've discovered TONS of music by just being on the site, and i've discovered plenty of other music by talking to some of the beautiful peeps around here, so yeah, it's a very cool site. Not so friendly for new users tho.
