04.28.15 | You can't be serious with Beat. |
Steven28
04.28.15 | why, am I the only one that wants to dance to Beat? |
ChoccyPhilly
04.28.15 | i think he meant the association with "avant-garde" |
Steven28
04.28.15 | Oh in that case I'm deadly serious. Beat is definitely avant-garde. |
TheBarber
04.28.15 | awesome list |
ChoccyPhilly
04.28.15 | genre bending isn't necessarily avant-garde... |

04.28.15 | 6 looks really cool, need to check. |

04.28.15 | But innovation -- simply being something new -- is avant garde |
Mort.
04.28.15 | "But innovation -- simply being something new -- is avant garde"
No its not, what is avant garde is more complex than that

04.28.15 | Please, do elaborate |
Mort.
04.28.15 | "Please, do elaborate"
"simply being something new" - quite vague and covers a shit ton of music depending on how you take it, effectively making the term "avant garde" meaningless especially if your definition is taken in its widest simplest sense (which im guessing is how you meant it to be taken otherwise you could of included a wider definition)
Not hatin just discussing

04.28.15 | List looks interesting |
Steven28
04.28.15 | That's fair enough. But avant garde has always been a pretty vague genre (maybe I should have though of another adjective for the list title).
Going by oxford dictionary, avant garde refers to 'new and experimental ideas and methods in art, music, or literature'. |
Ryus
04.28.15 | i've heard 2 and it's incredible, haven't gotten around to 1 yet.
6 is cool, probably going to check out 3 |
Mort.
04.28.15 | Yeah and tbh even describing it as a genre is pretty misleading. More like an approach to music i guess?
Dictionaries have that issue of trying to explain a complex issue or term as shortly and succintly as possible which results in wider issues being left out. i think avant garde fits in to that category
Cool list tho, might have to check out blut aus nord |
Steven28
04.28.15 | @mort blut aus nord can be pretty incredible I think. And yeah, avant garde is hard to pin down. I would say it is something new in a way that seeks to shock and surprise, if that's anymore specific. So I guess it depends on the period. stravinsky's rite of spring was avant garde in 1917 or whenever it was premiered, but isn't necessarily avant garde now. [edit: 1913. Muddled rite of spring and the russian revolution....]
@ryus if you like both 2 and 6, then I'm sure you'll at least appreciate 3 |

04.29.15 | Yeah but even if you assume avant-garde = innovation, Beat is not innovative. It doesn't add even one new idea to Discipline. |
Steven28
04.29.15 | I was kind of lumping all three of the 80s albums together, with beat being the most danceable |
TheBarber
04.29.15 | Avant-garde is pure innovation of form innit (thus cannot be a genre since it strives to create new ones)? More of an attitude towards art-making as a whole which prevailed in the modern art years (1900's to 1960's) and since then has cooled down and been deformed |
