Top 12 Albums Of '12 So Far

Some kid called me a hipster because I like Swans and Modest Mouse. Also these are the best releases this year so far. Discuss.
1The Walkmen
Heaven

Leithauser gives my favorite vocal performance on an album this year, and the
arrangements are big and happy while still being grounded. Their best work since
Bows + Arrows.
2MewithoutYou
Ten Stories

Creative, atmospheric, varied, and complex, this might just be their best yet.
3The Chariot
One Wing

Right off the triumph of Long Live, The Chariot continue to push the boundaries of
metalcore.
4Hop Along
Get Disowned

More emotional than Queen Ansleis, an eclectic gem of an album with fantastic
vocal gymnastics.
5Regina Spektor
What We Saw From The Cheap Seats

No, it isn't her best, simply because it isn't as memorable as Soviet Kitsch, but it's
easily a close second-endlessly catchy and captivating.
6Swans
The Seer

I've had this for about a month and I'm still digesting it. While I can't settle on a
rating, there is no denying this is absolutely monstrous, and nothing else like it so
far this year.
7Frank Ocean
Channel Orange

The best album of its kind since MBDTF, and I believe it will enjoy the same classic
treatment. Personal, fun, all around stunning hip-hop/funk/singer-songwriter album.
8Cat Power
Sun

A beguiling surprise, emotionally revealing as always, and featuring my favorite song
of the year so far, the Iggy Pop featuring Nothin' But Time.
9Circa Survive
Violent Waves

Circa Survive go epic, with an album that musically finally matches Anthony Green's
vocal prowess.
10Yellowcard
Southern Air

A band I was always determined to hate, Sowing finally convinced me to properly
listen to them, and man am I glad-wistful fun to just jam to.
11fun.
Some Nights

Yes, there are some real clunkers (looking at you, One Foot), but the two title
tracks, All Alright, Carry On, Stars, Out On The Town-all are reminders of fun.'s
specialty, marrying intimacy with huge, rousing arrangements.
12The Gaslight Anthem
Handwritten

Perhaps my favorite album of the year lyrically, Brian Fallon truly holds nothing
back, and Gaslight expand on a more bluesy sound.
