PistolPete
10.08.12 | Great list, but I have yet to hear a bassist I like more than Joe Lester from Intronaut. That guy slays. |
SgtPepper
10.08.12 | How has no one commented? List is great. Also interesting that you referred to Flea of RHCP by his actual name.
List is perfect but I would add Jack Bruce from Cream, Dan Briggs from BTBAM, and Juan Alderete from The Mars Volta. Those guys have some great basslines. |
PistolPete
10.08.12 | I love me a good bass licking every so often! |
CrownOfMagnets
10.08.12 | While I think 23 is one of the greatest lyricists and songwriters of all time, his bass playing has always been pretty simple with a few cool lines here and there. |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Thanks. I've never heard of the band. And the wiki search reveals some interesting facts. "Their sound incorporates traits from prog rock, psychedelic/stoner rock, Indian, African, and Afro-Latin rhythms, as well as a heavy jazz influence". Okay I need to check this band out. Which album is recommended for starters? |
DrMaximus
10.08.12 | Yeah Dan Briggs needs to be on here for sure |
PistolPete
10.08.12 | For Intronaut, try their newest one first "Valley of Smoke". Solid album and good introduction to them. Then work back. New album coming in 2013, so stoked. Saw these guys open for Tool earlier this year and was sold. They play super well live. |
insomniac15
10.08.12 | Les Claypool from Primus rules hard. |
ShadowRemains
10.08.12 | Brian Robinson - A Wilhelm Scream
Steve DiGiorgio - Death and a host of other bands
Jason Black - Hot Water Music |
tommygun
10.08.12 | Juan Alderete rocks yeah. He doesn't get much attention in the Mars Volta but I saw him live in a trio with Deantoni Parks and Omar and he had the place shaking |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Well I knew there would be bassists left out, mostly because I wouldn't have heard enough of them to assertively "approve" their bass playing. |
MasBarHigeuoris21
10.08.12 | Great list, but I have yet to hear a bassist I like more than Joe Lester from Intronaut. That guy slays. [2]
Actually had a chance to see Joe Lester play live with Intronaut last year. Words cannot describe how orgasmic the experience was |
tommygun
10.08.12 | Don't sweat it dude you got some great shit on this list |
tempest--
10.08.12 | Great list, 31 is so badass. Definitely needs Les Claypool though, and Cliff Burton is a favourite of mine. |
Uranium

undertakerpt
10.08.12 | Massive massive massive respect to number 11, as far as playing and musical composition, arrangement and originality goes, he is the best for me!
Good list. Personally I would have Les Claypool, Victor Wooten and Trevor Dunn from Mr Bungle on there though :) |
ReturnToRock
10.08.12 | Not a bad list, but 7 and 27 are way overrated imho.
Also, needs Bob Trujillo, Steve Harris, Cliff Burton (not gonna say Mike Dirnt or I'll get hate, even though his older stuff's pretty rad). |
Rastapunk
10.08.12 | Where the fuck is Flea?? |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Well thanks for all the responses. Nah John Myungs got a great music sense and groove, he doesn't show it anymore sadly. Check out New Millenium, Trial of Tears and this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rs1iT2dojww. I haven't heard much of Les Claypool or Victor Wooten, a couple of youtube videos isn't enough, but I probably will check him out. I was waiting for someone to mention Steve Harris' absence, he's a good composer but his galloping basslines can get tedious and exhausting. |
ReturnToRock
10.08.12 | Oh yeah, where's Entwistle? |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | I haven't heard much of The Who. I know I know, blasphemy. |
ReturnToRock
10.08.12 | Get on it man! His basslines are amazing, he can actually make it sound like the bass is "rolling" (check out the 'Ivor The Engine Driver' section of 'A Quick One While He's Away'). One of my favourites for sure. |
GnFnRs87
10.08.12 | So he is .... My mistake
Where's Entwhistle? [2] |
Jethro42
10.08.12 | Excellent list. I second Victor Wooten and Flea. |
undertakerpt
10.08.12 | To everyone that missed flea he is number 27 |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.08.12 | Yay, Dire Straits
Johan De Farfalla (left after Morningrise)>Martin Mendez |
Rastapunk
10.08.12 | Oh yeah lol :D |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Yeah Johan De Farfallas great, I like Mendez' tone more. Most prog bassists would fit into this list. And thaaank you undertakerpt saves me a lot of trouble :P. So many Flea fans and they don't even know his name tsk tsk. |
Crymsonblaze
10.08.12 | McCartney |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Listening to Mendez' slapping in Blackwater Park. He definitely needs to slap more. |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Jonas Reingold is a modern bass beast |
menawati
10.08.12 | damn no wetton ? |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Haven't heard his music, will need to check him out. Have a lot on the plate currently :P. |
KILL
10.08.12 | sweet list dude but coldplay queef and wetton was in king crimson dude you musta heard |
OmairSh
10.08.12 | Oh sorry I misread, I thought menawati said wooten, my bad. It took me a while to finalise and so I thought to just put it up, but yeah I forgot Wetton, I guess I forgot about Larks, will fix it. Haha coldplay ain't no Megadeth but I still enjoy them :D. |
oWhoadYo
