5 Great Musicians Who Took Years To Become Famous (redux)

Some musical artists become famous right away, others rrtake a while
1The Black Keys

First album "The Big Come Up" was released in 2001, did not become
famous until 2010 with the release of "Brothers".
2Red Hot Chili Peppers

Have garnered underground following since "Freaky Styley" (1985),
garnered recognition for their cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground"
from album "Mother's Milk" (1989). Became huge with "Under the Bridge"
from their 1991 album "BloodSugarSexMagik".
3Sonic Youth

Started in 1981 as a hardcore noise band coming from No Wave New York.
They released seminal album "Evol" and "Daydream Nation" (1986 and '88).
They became big with 1990's "Goo" and continued on with success with
!992's "Dirty".
4Yo La Tengo

Started in 1984 as an experimental noise pop band. Started to gain acclaim
with their acoustic folk-inspired album "Fakebook"(1990), released by Alias
records. Gained huge acclaim with 1993's "Painful".
5David Bowie

Started in 1964 working with a variety of folk and psychedelic bands.
Released a little loved debut "David Bowie" in 1968. He then released the
single "Space Oddity" which garnered him some attention, but it wasn't
long before he became labeled a one-hit wonder. He then released "The
Man Who Sold the World" in 1970. It didn't sell as well as he hoped. He
then released "Hunky Dory" (1971), and gained recognition by publicly
declaring his bisexuality. He then formed the Spiders from Mars and
released "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" in
1972. This album hit big and became a mega-huge-gigantic-ohmygod-what-
do you mean you never-heard-of-David Bowie-are you-an-idiot?! star (AKA
a Bowie-level superstar) He garnered acclaim for his subsequent
reinventions.
