12.07.12 | List consists of albums i've seen on lists and users say "generic list 1/5". In reality,
these albums are all excellent and deserve to overall acclaim that they have. |

12.07.12 | "liking albums everyone else does" = not elite |

12.07.12 | you can only like albums no one elses heard of |

12.07.12 | You're not exposing anyone to anything new or maybe things that aren't listed as often. You're not adding anything... just kind of stating the obvious. |
TumsFestival
12.07.12 | hmm, never thought about it like that |
ButteryBiscuitBass
12.07.12 | I.E. nothing new, generic, you're not liking anything out of the ordinary. They're OK, but not great and there's much better lesser known gems out there. |
ButteryBiscuitBass
12.07.12 | ^that's not saying I agree when people say it. |

all generic music has to do is suck
as there are variables and there are intensely many

no techniques
and waves of music that should hit

12.07.12 | List is not full of generic albums but calling it generic has turned into a generic way of saying
"yah, and"? |
RollieQuibbs
12.07.12 | Not really that generic when you think of NickelbLech, Mike Booblay, & No Direction. Really good list
actually ( not 5 or 2 )
I'm sure there are many North Americans under the age of 30 that have never heard of any of these. |
TumsFestival
12.07.12 | I'm not saying they're generic, I'm saying that i've seen other people call them generic |
RollieQuibbs
12.07.12 | I know that No Direction is for 12 year old girls, but does it really have to be that generic & terrible? Does it? Why do we accept mediocrity for our children? |
omnipanzer
12.07.12 | Sometimes they choose it for themselves. I couldn't pry my daughter away from stupid fucking pop/R&B radio blandness no matter how hard I tried. It's the bane of my existence. Like the other day when "Hey" by The Pixies came on the radio and she was like "oh this is horrible" (mocking me for doing it to her all the time) "can we turn it back to Clearchannel"? |
TumsFestival
12.07.12 | Hey - Pixies has been my favorite song of all time since I was 11 and if i heard it on the radio I'd totally lose it |
stabbler
12.07.12 | whenever i ask people what they like the answer is always 'i like a lot of different stuff'. whether it turns out to be true or not, i've never heard people admit up front that their tastes are generic |
Polyethylene
12.07.12 | People just get annoyed at the same albums cropping up a lot, but those albums get mentioned a lot for a reason - they're really fucking good. So as irritating as it may be to see OK Computer and ITAOS on every favourites list, a lot of people adore those albums with good reason. They deserve the constant mentions. |
liledman
12.07.12 | There are artists/albums which are generic to Sputnik, and there are artists/albums which are generic to other groups. There are no universals, generally it speaks for scenes/trends/crowds/groups/etc. A generic collection of albums or choice of albums is not in itself a jab at the actual albums, just the list maker. Calling the albums themselves generic is another thing. |
TumsFestival
12.07.12 | Poly totally nailed it. and edman this list applies to what sputnik finds generic |
Polyethylene
12.07.12 | Yeah, it's almost never a stab at the music, the critics of the list just hope the lister listens to music beyond what's considered "god tier" |

12.07.12 | "You're not exposing anyone to anything new or maybe things that aren't listed as often. You're not adding anything... just kind of stating the obvious."
This. Nothing wrong with liking 'generic' music some of it is great. But it's just pointless listing stuff everyone knows. One of the main reasons people come here is to find new music and seeing the 400th 'Iron Maiden Ranked' list gets a bit old. |

12.07.12 | "Also the fact that there are hundreds/thousands of better albums that DON'T get the attention they deserve, for one reason or another. "
If said albums received the attention they supposedly deserve, people would be saying that these "generic" choices are miles better and they deserve that attention.
See how stupid these arguments are? |
menawati
12.07.12 | doesnt make sense ^^ |

12.07.12 | "Is MoP the most rated album on the site?"
I'm pretty sure it is, though it doesn't have the highest rating. |

12.07.12 | Bad wording, I meant that the "Generic" choices wouldn't be "generic" and people would say they're miles better than whatever other thing passes as "generic". |
Minus.
12.07.12 | I think this is a great list. |

12.07.12 | If I tell someone that his taste is generic I'm not saying it's shit. I'm saying it's generic. |
menawati
12.07.12 | The point isn't whether they are better or worse than the more well-known ones it's that there is no point listing stuff that nearly everybody has heard. |
Winrar
12.07.12 | Generic lists are shit because nobody wants to see a list of the same fucking albums over and over again.
/thread. |
menawati
12.07.12 | ...but then why is it that 'Metallica Ranked' lists get 50 comments and '10 obscure things you've never heard' lists get 5 comments |
Winrar
12.07.12 | Because comment count obviously = quality of a list. |
menawati
12.07.12 | obviously not, but comment count would indicate level of interest being higher in generic lists which would contradict both your statement AND my statement |
Gwyn.
12.07.12 | @Menawati
Because everyone knows metallica, so a lot of people can hop in a discuss something, but when you choose largely obscure things, chances are only a handful of people have heard some of the albums, it's almost guaranteed that no one will have heard them all. |
menawati
12.07.12 | just saying you know, many people on here including you and me saying no-one wants generic crap on lists but their popularity on here doesnt agree with our opinion |
Winrar
12.07.12 | Also, many generic CONVERGERANKED lists become troll-infested or off topic threads, its just a better place for people to dick around. |
menawati
12.07.12 | yea true |
jdennis31
12.07.12 | all the obscure recs are always some ambient shit or metal though. someone rec some more super obscure pop or rock |
menawati
12.07.12 | that aint true jdennis, silentpotato does loads of lists of varied stuff, riffoclock did one recently and so did greg84, they were all pretty diverse |
jdennis31
12.07.12 | ahh, i might need to just keep my eye out for them then. on a new music search but haven't been finding too much that i like other than hip hop albums and guitar driven post rock |

12.07.12 | There is no such thing as bad music.
Now, there'll be users waiting to point out what a retard I am but if I started paying attention to try-hard people who listen to "different" or "elite" music, I'd be the biggest sucker of them all.
The childish conformity on this site is ridiculous.
Every song is written with a specific intention and that's the beauty of it.
Just because you don't like an artist doesn't mean they suck.
Just because it's mainstream music doesn't mean it sucks either.
Make your own choices and ignore anyone with who starts with their elitist crap.
The only reason I'm here on sputnik is that it's a very good way to broaden your taste in music.

People seem to see this positive correlation between "obscure" and "good." While there may be novelty in listening to music nobody else has really heard, or that some of the more unique music can be found when you dig super-deep, at the end of the day how beloved or well-known the music is doesn't effect it's quality in either direction. Listen to popular stuff, listen to obscure stuff, whatever. Just don't hate chrissake |
