High-Key Depresso

For this list I want: songs that are straight up depressing but no one realises they are because they're poppy or whatever.
1John Mellencamp
American Fool

Jack and Diane

Depressing because: the hokey verses about a couple of young American kids lead to a big singalong but hang on "Life goes on long after the thrill of living is gone"? Did Leonard Cohen co-write this?
2Harry Chapin
Verities and Balderdash

Cats in the Cradle

Depressing because: everyone thinks the line "My boy was just like me" is a proud reflection on the way his son has become a man and a father. Actually, it is a realisation from an old man at the end of his life that by never making time for his son in his childhood, he has made a void between them that is too late to mend.
