TheNotrap
08.03.11 | yep Venom's debut is definitely essential. |
Hawks
08.03.11 | Needs more Don't Break the Oath and Melissa. |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.03.11 | Good, solid list.
These are essential and influential but not the most essential and influential. |
BigHans
08.03.11 | Hard to pick
Puppets and Paranoid for sure. Probably Number of the Beast. So many that would probably be tied after that. |
Parallels
08.03.11 | Unoriginal but passable. [2] |
TheArkitecht
08.03.11 | I wouldn't rec someone slayer if they were trying to get into metal personally, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Anthrax and Dio I'd probably give them. |
DominionMM1
08.03.11 | These are essential and influential but not the most essential and influential
I think that depends on one's definition of metal. |
JamieTwort
08.03.11 | These albums are definitely essential to any metal fan's collection. I would also say Diamond Head - Lightning to the Nations. |
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | "These are essential and influential but not the most essential and influential"
What will be your choice? |
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | Still missing 2 recs on your comment BigHans. Paranoid, Puppets, Number of the Beast.. |
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | Yep JT but the hard thing is to choose only the best 5. What's your top 5? |
Megadeth
08.03.11 | best list i ever saw |
JamieTwort
08.03.11 | Hard to say, let's go with:
Paranoid
Sad Wings of Destiny
The Number of the Beast
Master of Puppets
Lightning to the Nations
|
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | Cool 5 definitely. I understand Lightning to the Nations was extreme essential and influential...but in my opinion Reign in
Blood also deserves to be here.
It's really hard to choose only 5 and leave records out like Holy Diver, The Number of the Beast, British Steel... |
ThusSpokeZarathustra
08.03.11 | I can’t pick 5 albums that are the most important to metal without leaving out some of the sub-genres. Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Venom, Metallica, Hellhammer, Slayer, Bathory, Mantas/Death, Sarcofago, Napalm Death, Blasphemy, Morbid Angel, Paradise Lost, Burzum, Darkthrone and arguably many more were all originators of one metal style or another. If we're just talking personal favourites that were highly influential it's a bit easier.. |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.03.11 | "I think that depends on one's definition of metal."
Exactly.
What is exactly Heavy Metal music??
What exactly defines Heavy Metal?
Is it the lyrics??
The extended solos??
the vocals??
The rhythm??
The guitar distortion or perhaps the actually level of distortion??
The bass lines??
The accentuated emphasizing role of bass guitar?? |
someguest
08.03.11 | No Judas Priest album is essential. |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.03.11 | What will be your choice?
I would choose :
Paranoid, Sad Wings Of Destiny, and some other proto-metal records.
Because all those artists, Sabbath included, were influenced by other non Metal (but heavy) bands. |
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | "What is exactly Heavy Metal music??
What exactly defines Heavy Metal?"
....Good point there. I believe its a little bit of everything you said "the lyrics, the vocals, the solos,.."
Basically rock'n'roll with a heavier attitude specially on the guitars, vocals and drums. In my opinion the song Black Sabbath could be a cool definition of the genre.
When you say Proto-metal you're talking about Purples's Machine Head or Led Zeppelin?
|
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | @ThusSpokeZarathustra
Yep you're right. That's why is so difficult to make a 5 most essential list...We always leave something behind.
A 100 most essential is definitely more easy to make. |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.03.11 | When you say Proto-metal you're talking about Purples's Machine Head or Led Zeppelin?
Partially yes, i'm talking about some late 60's psychedelic-blues bands who's heavy non-metal sound proved essential and paved the way for bands like, Sabbath and Purple who influenced everyone else.
Bands like:
Led Zep, Cream, Blue Cheer, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly that kind of stuff.
MC5, and The Stooges were also REALLY heavy and influential.
And all these bands existed before the almighty Sabbath. |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.03.11 | Also Sir Lord Baltimore's debut was brutal for it's time and influential. |
GnarlyShillelagh
08.03.11 | I'd probably say
Blackwater Park
Still Life
Ghost Reveries
Deliverance
anddddd WAIT FOR IT
Damnation |
Wolfhorde
08.03.11 | If we're talking Heavy Metal as in the subgenre Heavy Metal 4 and 5 don't actually fit that criteria. |
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | Definitely. All those bands were crucial to this genre. Even Pink Floyd, Soft Machine or Yes were influential.
Usually when I think Metal I think also in Purple and Zeppelin but if I have included Machine Head or Zep IV here I probably will leave Reign in Blood and Sad Wings of Destiny behind...not fair because in my opinion these 2 records are extremely essential. |
TheNotrap
08.03.11 | If we're talking Heavy Metal as in the subgenre Heavy Metal 4 and 5 don't actually fit that criteria.
Heavy Metal: From Hard Rock (ex: Scorpions) to all extreme subgenres like Grindcore |
Skweetis
08.04.11 | I'd say self titled Sabbath is more essential. |
rockandmetaljunkie
08.04.11 | More essential, no.
More influential, yes. |
