Animal Collective Songs Ranked Collectively

extremely timely list as per. accusations of this merely being Feels/HCTI/MPP songs ranked with token interspersions fair but i will not concede to it! really great band that I'm coming to love again after an amicable hiatus.
50Animal Collective
Bridge to Quiet

Bridge to Quiet. I'm not analysing every song here because I have shed blood and sweat enough compiling this and laborious typing everything out with a 30 percent chance of publication for you swine and scourges, but will defend my choices, hopefully in a way that isn't insipid or crude. good list incoming
49Animal Collective
Centipede Hz

Amanita.
48Animal Collective
Painting With

Golden Gal. They have heard your Beach Boys comparisons and they are committing to the bit
47Animal Collective
Danse Manatee

Lablakely Dress. Which I think looks nice on you! Just your size.
46Animal Collective
Campfire Songs

Queen in my Pictures. Particularly adroit and beautiful fade into the following song actually.
45Animal Collective
Danse Manatee

Essplode.
44Animal Collective
Painting With

Vertical. Gotta warn u all there are more songs on Painting With here than on sung tongs or spirit they've gone (i didn't include the remaster for the latter admittedly)
43Animal Collective
Crestone (Original Score)

Zapata Falls. AnCo meld their sensibilities to the contraints and freedoms of scoring, allowing more literal cinematic scope to their excesses and nuances alikef. Needless to say it works.
42Animal Collective
Strawberry Jam

Peacebone. So low, testament to the band's extraordinary quality.
41Animal Collective
Painting With

Natural Selection. Something of a natural selection itself.
40Animal Collective
Crestone (Original Score)

Over the Sangre de Christo
39Animal Collective
Sung Tongs

Mouth Wooed Her
38Animal Collective
Fall Be Kind

What Would I Want Sky. I regale people with this anecdote all the time but I saw them live, in the interregnum between Fall Be Kind's leak and official release, and the crowd roared along the lyrics; proof that in some way I was beholding the biggest band in the world.
37Animal Collective
Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished

Bat You'll Fly. Charming!
36Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

My Girls. Great post-chorus OOOH
35Animal Collective

The Softest Voice.
34Animal Collective

Recycling.
33Animal Collective
Strawberry Jam

#1. #33 actually!
32Animal Collective

Guy's Eyes. weird lyrics. great song though
31Animal Collective

Ahh Good Country. No need for Alvin Row.
30Animal Collective
Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished

La Rapet
29Animal Collective

22Animal Collective
Feels

21Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

Summertime Clothes.
20Animal Collective
Centipede Hz

New Town Burnout. Closest they've come in the last decade to something cathartic and raw
19Animal Collective
Feels

The Purple Bottle. The most consistently incredible live renditions.
18Animal Collective
Strawberry Jam

Safer. Eternally a mystery as to why it didn't close Strawberry Jam - maybe a shade too dark, too chaotic?
17Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

Taste.
16Animal Collective
Painting With

Floridada. A fine introduction to the most mis-represented of their albums
15Animal Collective
Strawberry Jam

Derek.
14Animal Collective
Ark

Slippi.
13Animal Collective
Ark

Infant Dressing Table.
12Animal Collective

7Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

In the Flowers.
6Animal Collective
Prospect Hummer

I Remember Learning How to Dive.
5Animal Collective
Merriweather Post Pavilion

Brother Sport.
4Animal Collective
Feels

Grass. The Doo-Wop background in the bridge!
3Animal Collective
Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished

Spirit They've Vanished. A beautiful template for a common fixation - loss of "innocence" and the sense of the wondrous is rendered in poignant lament that never feels like a dirge, presented somehow with innocence and wonder firmly intact. Awareness of impending loss that isn't harrowing. The noise is the most beautiful sound in the world, actually. It's ok to succumb.
2Animal Collective
Ark

Two Sails on a Sound. In which a room so crowded one can barely breathe is abruptly vacated and breath is all one can hear. Beautiful, sparse longing in a vein Mark Hollis would be proud of.
1Animal Collective
Feels

Banshee Beat. It's no secret: Animal Collective's distinguishing feature is their ability to view adult concerns, preoccupations and anxieties, thru the lens of -> the psychedelia of childhood; the emotional intensity and resonance of adolescence. So it's fitting that they're at their best when they're dealing with extremities of the heart, soul, mind that are rarely touched, things so visceral in the realm of love, desire and longing that they are usually presented in muddled abstruse abstract or clumsy connotation. Not so here; though they can't "find the very special words" they "should", the representation of pain and soothing is represented in abrupt falsetto and cooing "oh oh oh"'s, in a language unique to Animal Collective but explicable to all, touching what is rarely touched with a deft touch. A marvel that makes them, still, vital. And fun as all shit. Thanks.
