Even your average real world music junkie isn't nearly as exposed to as many genre labels as sputnik or rym users so giving specific genres is usually useless in furthering a conversation.

I've been privileged to talk to some awesome people since college started, but I am a cliche and will, without fail, answer "everything" to that question. But, the way I introduce "but I listen to this kinda stuff more often" varies: last semester I had a TA who used to be in a technical death metal band so we spent a lot of time talking about extreme metal when class ended. When I segued into my other broader, less heavier interests he was almost confused and felt slightly out of his element lol. Another time I talked to a girl wearing a Velvet Underground shirt and turns out to also love Bjork so the convo was more like modern indie/alternative stuff like Beach House and some Bowie with no mention of metal. I've been blessed to have also have 2 people recognize my Darkthrone shirt which sparked some great short-lived conversations

It's funny when you name-drop a fairly popular artist, but then later (after receiving positive vibes) have to clarify that you only like 'their earlier stuff' and all the potential camaraderie goes up in flames (or should that be 'In Flames' - not an actual example, kind of works though).
