That's the single dumbest statement I've read all day, and trust me, I've read a lot of them. |

jefflebowski
09.05.11 | Well I must be, If I disagree with your esteemed opinion.
Patti Smith was a massive influence on punk, sure, hence the 'godmother' title, but she was musically far removed from american hardcore punk and many of the british punk bands too. 'Horses' isn't all that similar to many of the albums on this list. I'm sorry if you disagree, but it doesn't make me an idiot |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | Yeah, he'd be much more knowledgeable on the subject. |
FrankRedHot

So wait, since she's not "British," she's not punk? Oh, that logic's about as solid as a fresh piece of dog shit. |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | nope, I never said that, and yes, suggesting that would be bullshit. I consider her to be proto-punk/new york punk, as her musical style is so different to most punk bands |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | I didn't know there was a formula you had to follow to be punk. |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | don't certain genres imply certain musical styles? |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | Sure, but if we wanna get really technical then, how can you include Black Flag, Minor Threat, and Refused on here? Black Flag and Minor Threat are hardcore, and Refused are post-hardcore/hardcore.
See where your argument is flawed? Next time you wanna make a punk list, learn to punk. |
OrangeHologram
09.05.11 | is punk even a verb yet |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | I'm punking right now.
Oh, no.... I meant puking.... |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | hardcore punk, is still punk. The hardcore punk scene rose directly out of the punk scene and bears a very heavy resemblance to it. The proto-punk scene contained a much more eclectic range of artists that influenced the genre in different ways, so I wouldn't group them under the punk umbrella. Patti Smith and the MC5 aren't very similar musically, but I'd call them both proto-punk, which to me defines a much wider range of music. Sorry if I'm rambling on.
I'll give you refused though, I kinda regret putting that on now |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | and lol, proto-punk and post-punk, well, must still be punk then. Seriously, think about what you say before you say it. |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | well, no, I explained the difference in the somewhat verbose paragraph after it. For me, proto-punk doesn't tie in to a specific style of music, and punk, for the purposes of this particular list, does.

IT'S CALLED PROTO-PUNK
HOLY SHIT |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | So if it's proto-punk it's not gonna be straight punk is it?
This is getting pedantic now, we're just arguing over semantics. I'm sorry if I've annoyed you |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | Well, hardcore punk isn't straight punk either. |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | musically, it's much closer than patti smith is |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | It doesn't matter. It's all punk. Holy shit, how do you not understand this? |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | I understand your list is a matter of opinion, but to just dismiss an artist or a group of artists because they don't sound like your "ideal" punk just makes you seem really, really ignorant. |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | well, when I was making the list, it did matter.
Look, you're probably right, I'm sure you're more knowledgeable about the subject than me. I'm only 16 and still exploring the genre etc. etc.
But there's no need to get so pissed off about a difference of opinion |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | I'm not mad about a difference of opinion. I'm not mad about anything. I'm just completely dumbfounded as to how you can tell me that Patti Smith, Minutemen, etc. isn't "punk" enough. |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | and I wasn't dismissing them, 'Horses' is a fucking amazing album |
Trebor.
09.05.11 | I learned to punk when I was like 10 dude
You have no excuse |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | Yeah, you are! Lol, you're telling me Patti Smith doesn't belong on a punk list because she's not "punk sounding" enough for you. That's dismissing her. |
jefflebowski
09.05.11 | In terms of their music, they're too musically diverse. That's a good thing though, right? In terms of attitude and ethics, the Minutemen and Patti Smith are about as punk as it gets |
FrankRedHot
09.05.11 | Ugh..... you're fucking impossible.
IT'S PUNK, WHETHER YOU'RE DISCUSSING SOUND OR ATTITUDE. IT'S FUCKING PUNK..... as I said earlier, learn to punk.
And if you don't have much experience with the genre, how are you even able to form an opinion about what is or what isn't? Maybe you should stop posting and read a little bit. |

and yeah you're way too concerned with what punk bands "should" sound like, as a style of music it can't really be externally defined and there isn't really any boundaries to the artists you could put on this list if you think their ethos/attitude fits the term
