ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | Blues Jr is great though, put a Pharoah fuzz in front of it and you've got instant Black Keys. Among other things. Godin's are fantastic too, honestly way too underrated overall. Living in Canada though I find them more often. I seem to recall John Haughm of Agalloch used a Godin on tour...

07.07.13 | I have an upgraded RWP Tele, a Jackson Kelly, an Epiphone Thunderbird and some random acoustic. I play through a Vox AC4 with a Fulltone OCD. I record using some cheaper MXL mics into Mixcraft 6. I love my recording lair |
jdennis31
07.07.13 | Werd. I need to get better at using effects, I have no idea what i'm doing. Can't even emulate simple dotted eigth delays that all those pop punk/alt bands use, though I haven't really put too much effort into it. Compressor is vital for all the tapping I do, but on the m13 all I use is light delay/reverb/distortion just for tone so it's pretty wasted. |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | I use an SM57 for recording like everyone ever, but one of my friends/band mates just spent a fair amount on decent recording equipment, so hopefully something will happen with that.
Nice link jdennis, this is very chill, has some nice groove. |
SitarHero
07.07.13 | Very basic.
Epiphone LP Standard, mahogany with rosewood fretboard and black finish. The guitar was actually a present from one of my former roommates and somehow he'd managed to pick out the LP with the slimmest neck I've ever seen/played. It's amazing. I've never been completely happy with the pickups though and have been meaning to replace them but haven't gotten around to it.
Zoom g2.1u processor. It's a recent acquisition and most of the guitarists I know hate digital effects, but I get decent tone and it's sure a helluva lot cheaper than a bunch of analog pedals. |
beefshoes
07.07.13 | I have a fairly cheap set up. I use Reaper as my main DAW, Line 6 POD, MicoKorg for MIDI and recording my keyboards, rock band USB mic for vocals, and a wealth of free VSTs. I get a fairly decent sound considering or at least good enough for what I do at the moment until I finish Uni. |
jdennis31
07.07.13 | Much appreciated. One of my first recordings ever so the mixing is pretty poor, but it was good practice. |
MeatSalad
07.07.13 | i play a gold plated gibson les paul which i play through an experimental marshall amp which you can't play cause my dad works for marshall and said i can't share it with anyone |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | Man, I use to be the same. Had no idea what to do with my Boss DD-3 even. But when you mess around with an effect for like a month you really get to know it. You can pick up effects in songs more easily too. For me, I have to get back to playing challenging stuff. Lately I've been jamming Weezer, post-rock, Neurosis, so my more fast paced skills are lacking. |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | Come on Meat, when can I come over and play it? Is it in your dad's office where we're not allowed? |
jdennis31
07.07.13 | Haha, yea I hear ya. I got tired of playing metal/hard rock songs for a bit but have been having a blast relearning some old songs with the new Godin, plays pretty fast for a blues/jazz oriented guitar. Chops have gotten pretty sloppy though -_- |
jdennis31
07.07.13 | Do PRS's generally have a darker tone, or was it because of the pick ups you put in them? |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | Sitar, I know a lot of guys that use stuff like the Zoom, and honestly I think it's smart. I've poured money into my pedals and they can get similar tones with their effects units which cost a lot less. Digital delay specifically is awesome |
climactic
07.07.13 | i'm not a gear head at all. i'm a drummer and i've got a pearl export set with zildjian A custom and sabian HHX cymbals (nicest part of my setup). recently i've been recording more so i got me a focusrite interface, logic pro, amplitube and guitar rig (torrented). still use my epiphone les paul for practice and recording. gotta upgrade the guitar soon |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | I think most PRS use mahogany bodies and rosewood fingerboards, so they definitely do have a darker sound. But the pickups are fairly bright and almost all their models now are coil tapped, so you can get a huge range from dark to bright. But mine is definitely darker because of the pickups =P |
XingKing
07.07.13 | I think it's a matter of making your penis feel better. When you see a guy playing a Squire, you instantly think less of him or assume he sucks. It's the same thing when people use digital gear. People just can't help but not take people seriously who don't spend a fortune on the expensive shit, regardless of whether they are killer players or not. Sad |
jdennis31
07.07.13 | @Xing I've seen many players much better sounding than I on a piece of shit squire. I've spoken to many gear heads who think they don't sound good because they are missing some equipment. Led me to my somewhat minimalistic approach to making music. |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | @climactic - Most drummers I know pour money into everything *but* the cymbals, so that's good. Epis can be great, good luck with your practice. I know I'm shit at drums so it's always nice to hear drummers practicing guitar, haha |
XingKing
07.07.13 | I've never understood people who feel the need to have insanely expensive gear either. A good musician can make most anything sound good |
climactic
07.07.13 | i play guitar a lot more than drums recently. i'm still a drummer at heart and naturally way better at drums than guitar, but for the purpose of writing music and stuff i picked up guitar. i enjoy them both a lot |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | I admit to have spent quite a lot of money across guitars, pedals, and amps myself. But it was a
progression as I got better and played more. I started out with shit everything and when I knew it
sounded bad and I could play better, I upgraded.
Nonetheless though I know there are so many people who could outplay me with a Squier and a Peavey SS. |
jdennis31
07.07.13 | Agreed @ Xing. It is nice to have though, and does help with playing/sounding better. Just gotta make sure that you always know your technique/playing is the basis for how everything will sound, not your gear. |
SitarHero
07.07.13 | Honestly, I just give a mental middle finger to other guitarists who give me shit about digital effects. The best set-up I have ever used was when I plugged straight into a friend's Marshall for a show and used the overdrive channel and volume knobs to control colour. Les Pauls and Marshalls were just meant to go together, that shit was glorious. |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | I know the jump from guitar guitar to bass was very fluid for me, and it definitely helped my rhythm playing. But after I learned Dragonaut and some Isis I got bored... I think learning drums would be a huge help for me |

I mainly just use the Blackstar's dist at the moment but I have a Big Muff and a couple of rats.
DD-3, DL4, Strymon El Capistan, RV-5, korg tuner
I'm now in search for a nice soundcard actually, an apogee duet or a focusrite

ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | @ BlueW - nice, HT-5 is awesome. Was my second choice versus the Tiny Terror. How do you like the Rats? I need to grab one someday, love the tone they pump out. |
climactic
07.07.13 | drums are, in my opinion, the most fun and also the easiest to pick up. they helped me immensely with rhythm, timing, odd time signatures, etc., after a while that stuff becomes completely natural mentally and on other instruments. i haven't played serious in a couple years, damn i wanna start up again |
BlueW
07.07.13 | Rats are good, I'd get the mooer black secret it's only like 80$ but better sounding than my proco. I had to get one as my bass player started using my proco but I couldn't care less now haha. |
XingKing
07.07.13 | It's definitely nice to use a guitar that matches your skill, but you don't need a guitar that costs thousands upon thousands of dollars. My Kelly is like $1300 and I don't see any need to ever spend anything more than that no matter how skilled I become because it's a perfect piece of gear. |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | @ climactic - always gotta support someone getting back into an instrument. Hope you get to squeeze some time in
@ Blue - I've never tried Mooer's but they kinda just burst on the scene. I'll have to check it out.
@ Xing - feel the same way about my G&L. And damn, Jacksons must have the best necks for shredding. People usually like Ibanez, but I find them to be a bit too thin. My first was a Jackson, and even though it was a POS, I loved the neck. |
BlueW
07.07.13 | Man I also want a TH-30 but I like the idea of a lunch box amp, do any of the tiny terrors do nice cleans? |
XingKing
07.07.13 | My first guitar was a Jackson Dinky too and it wasn't too great, but man do I miss that thing. I sincerely regret selling it. I'd keep it forever and just hang it on my wall if I could. |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | @ Blue - I find the TT surprisingly clean. I use it for post-rock stuff all the time. The only problem is that it doesn't have huge clean headroom. If you get loud, your amp gets dirty, which can be an issue with a loud drummer. But for practice, recording, and micing, I'd highly recommend the TT. The Dark Terror is more gainy since it has an extra pre-amp, and the Dual is about the same, but more expensive.
@ Xing - I have an acoustic I keep, since it seems to be a family heirloom now, lol. |
SitarHero
07.07.13 | I've got an Ovation acoustic copy that I used to play a lot more, but lately only gets busted out when I'm trying to get laid. |

07.07.13 | Literally all I use is a 30 dollar Samson Go Microphone that I cover with a microfiber cloth (which I use to clean my camera lens lol) as a pop filter, Audacity, an ebow occasionally, and my acoustic guitars, my mandolin, my dulcimer, and anything I can get my hands on that makes a good sound. Sometimes I even use silverware for percussion.
I'll add that my first album kinda sucked. I mean some people here liked it. But I don't like it at all. The thing I'm working on now is turning out way better though, both musically and in production quality.
Now that I'm employed, though, I plan to pick myself up some better gear. |

Thanks. I had a big TMV phase and when I saw the guitar on Thomann I bought it instantly. I'd like to get a hollow Gretsch or a Motor Ave (the one Homme from QOTSA and Alain Johannes use, it's so beautiful and sounds cool). I bought the Mesa from the dudes that left Negura Bunget (I live in the same city with them) - the guitar players. I bought it at half price because one of them needed the money quick. |

07.07.13 | ^ that goes for most guitars haha |

07.07.13 | Nice. 7321 are good once you get a nice setup and better pickups

07.07.13 | Haha, no kidding. It's sort of the reason why I'm afraid to buy a guitar with a trem system even though I love the effect itself. I hear good things about Original Floyd Roses and stuff but still.
Hell, finding a modern guitar with an OFR is a rare sight these days anyway. Seems to be Licensed this or Floyd 1000 that... |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | Well I hope you enjoy whatever you upgrade, that's the best part. Just a month ago I went from an SD-1 to my White Light OD and the difference was so great I couldn't believe it. Good luck, stay true to our nation m/
As for trem systems I've used, I find PRS is good but you still get some issues and just changing half a step takes five minutes. To its credit, I've put my PRS in standard all the way to Bb (and literally everything in between). My Fender Strat seems a little more stable to me. Of course I can't dive bomb with either one. I always thought Khaller trems looked cool, never tried 'em. |
ChuckyTruant
07.07.13 | I don't like trems much(love the simplicity of my RGA), but I can deal with them if I put a Tremol-No on it. Unfortunately the stupid Ibanez zero-point trems aren't compatible with the T-N's so.... screw those things |
bloc
07.07.13 | Yeah I am quite excited. Apparently this model is Traynor's take on an AC30 which I've always been a fan of (minus the weight and volume of course :p).
I do want a Strat sometime in my life and there is really no way I'm ever going to get a hardtailed one, so it's inevitable I end up with at least one trem equipped guitar. Hopefully I never get tempted to change it's tuning constantly haha. |
UnnamedOcean
07.07.13 | For guitar, I'm mostly a Fender person. I have a CV Telecaster which is amazing for the price, and I'm saving up for a Lonestar Stratocaster as well. However I also have an ancient Peavey T-60 from the first ever year of factory production.
When it comes to drums, I like Yamaha with Evans heads, and I use a mix of Sabian and Dream cymbals. I particularly like the Sabian HH line, but they are expensive as hell so I don't own any. |
ZombicidalMan
07.07.13 | My favourite trem has to be on the Jazzmaster. It's notorious but it looks so damn good. I haven't had too much trouble changing tuning with my Strat, it's pretty smooth going down a step or so. But I wouldn't want to try it in a live situation. |
ncguitar
07.07.13 | My top gear was an Ibanez RG350EX, some 50W Ibanez amp, and a Zoom G7.1ut fx pedal.

07.07.13 | I'll be getting an Audio-Technica side address condenser mic soon because I want to take my vocals seriously. It'll be a USB mic though because I don't have any XLR cords or pre-amps for phantom power and all that jazz. Probably end up running it into Audacity. |
