05.07.12 | Well I think there should be a .5 because a 1/5 is a 2/10 and there are some albums that are way worse than a 2/10 |
livingisland
05.07.12 | I'm weird with ratings. 5's are albums that I love to death but only listen to every once in a while so I don't grow tired of them. 4.5's are albums I can listen to over and over again. 4's are consistently good albums. 3.5's are albums that I don't enjoy too much but can appreciate, or albums that are perfect within it's genre. And the rest I kinda don't care that much about |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.07.12 | 1 - Absolute total shit, no saving grace at all
1.5 - Same as 1.5, but maybe with an acceptable song or two
2 - Consistently poor, maybe 2 or 3 half-decent songs, but nothing above average
2.5 - Average, no long-term appeal, not interesting
3 - Good, but usually boring or inconstant or both
3.5 - An enjoyable listen, often with a standout track or two that I'll listen to every now and then
4 - An album that I will probably listen to reasonably often as a whole
4.5 - An album that makes a seriously strong impression on me and that I will actively seek out to listen to again
5 - An album that is either perfect, or both seriously influential and worthy a 4.5 |
YankeeDudel
05.07.12 | I pretty much rate everything I like above a 4. A 3.5 means they're solid and 3 or below means its really not worth listening to. I mean if I saw a review for an album that was getting a bunch of 2.5 or 3 out of 5 reviews I wouldnt want to listen to it, so I dont know why that means "good" or "average" on this site.
I should 5 more albums than I do even. Think about all the amazing albums over the past 60 years, yet some people here only have a handful of 5s. I dont get it. Whats really the difference between "great" and "superb" lol. To me music is either good, average, or bad. Ratings are kind of stupid but I guess they're fun and helpful to an extent. |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.07.12 | For me, "great" has always seemed kinda half-hearted compared to "superb" (in general)
I'm quite mean with my 5s, since very few albums are totally flawless, or good enough to completely ignore the flaws, so I only have 6-7 5s |

YankeeDudel
05.07.12 | Think about the albums on this site that have 2.5-3 average ratings. They're pretty fuckin awful. So how is that "average" to "good". You see people rate an album a 2.5 here and say "its okay", but to me thats really bad. Since you cant rate an album less than a 1 that makes 3 the average rating for an album, which makes more sense.
1 - Not worth existing
1.5 - Awful
2 - Poor
2.5 Forgettable
3 - Average
3.5 - Good
4 - Great
4.5 - Excellent
5 - Splooge
Thats how I look at it. |

05.07.12 | I disagree I think a 3 is very mediocre and not worthy of taking up space on my computer. 3 doesnt mean "good" to me. I always try to listen to music Id rate a 3.5 or above. 05.07.12 | I have three things:
1. Very few albums are 4.5 or especially a 5. I am picky and rarely think music is brilliant.
2. I have a 32 gb Ipod and listen to everything on it. I trim out all songs I don't like. I could have a bit bigger of a Ipod, but I don't have time to listen to 80gbs of music. If it is on my Ipod i listen to it. Every last song.
3. Every complete album must be at least a 4 in my book. OR, like mewithoutYou's newest album I like about half of it, so ill just keep that half. I don't cut songs lightly, unless it is blantant filler. |

Jesus fuck is this pretentious, maybe you should stop listening to music and pick up reading or start
watch films or something. Music is made to be listened to and enjoyed, not for being rated only. |

05.07.12 | Alright lets clear up a few things. I have listened to well over 100 gb of music, and I have not choosen to rate everything, (I've had my ratings wiped before and it takes a long time). I have had a discussion about this one one of my lists "Do you rate everything you listen to?)" If you guys didn't read this tread I understand your confusion. I don't really rate anything below a 3 cause I just move on. "No more listens, no rating and no future rec..." As a conseqence though, my ratings are skewed toward only 5-4 range.
And I only mention that I am picky because I have listened to a great deal of music. When I listen to any album I want it to be amazing.
(And its funny that "AGuyIsWatchingYou" mentions start watching films or something. This is my only thing I do more then listen to music). Almost went into film but I chose Crimnal Justice instead. |
VisionsFromTheDarkSide
05.07.12 | A lot of it is if I'm doing something then I forget about the music a lot, so for example if I'm walking somewhere and I zone out of my music a lot it will rarely get above a 3 |
Deviant.
05.08.12 | Why do so many people downplay a 3.5? I mean granted it is only an arbitrary number, but "might contain a few good tracks while the rest will be discarded" doesn't really sound like a "great" album to me |
YankeeDudel
05.08.12 | Thats because a 3.5 shouldnt mean "great".
Great to me means like "damn this shit is GREAT!". A 3.5 says slightly above average to me. Stands out a little bit but otherwise is nothing special. |

05.08.12 | Yes, but if you're rating on a site that dictates a 3.5 as great..... |
ManintheBox
05.08.12 | to me 3.5 means, you've listened to an album and can listen the whole way through it, there are just a couple of songs which are amazing and could be on like a 4.5 or 5 album. and I generally keep any album in my collection if it is a 3.5 or higher. |

2.5 - enjoyable album but nothing spectacular, shows more room to grow
3 - a solid album
3.5 - something worthwhile; really enjoyable and something that you can give repeat listens to.
4 - excellent material; a satisfying album that one day could be a favorite
4.5 - superb effort- maintains a consistently heavy listening rotation
5 - essential/classic/perfect/etc... - reserved for only absolute favorites- albums that over time have proven their worth and quality. |

ManintheBox
05.08.12 | oh, see I mostly go on replay value mixed in with objectivity. In the end a 5 is just something Ilove listeing to over and over again. |

05.08.12 | For instance, I have ABR's Constellations at 4.5, and I think pretty much everyone agrees that it is by no means perfect, but I am completely content with listening to it more than just once in a while, while I have Vali's Forlatt at a 5, because it is a phenomenal album, I just wouldn't really feel like listening to it every couple of days. |

05.08.12 | 1 - Awful. A chore to listen to
1.5 - Not horrible, but absolutely nothing of interest to be found. Or, might be mostly horrible with one or two minor redeeming moments
2-2.5 - Like 2-3 songs depending on the overall length of the album
3 - Has several great songs, maybe even one or two I absolutely love, but it has a lot of parts I don't get much from and skip through.
3.5 - About half and half, depending on the level of quality/lasting value of the songs I do enjoy.
4 - Like most of the songs, maybe even all of them bar one or too.
4.5 - Like most of the songs, if not all. This album also lasts a while.
5 - Basically a super 4.5. Enjoy all of the songs a lot, love several of them. Still listening with a high level of enjoyment for years afterwards (so generally I rarely 5 something immediately). Probably has that extra spark that gets you every time and you never find yourself bored with any prolonged parts. Solid in every sense down to every song. |

07.01.12 | 5: An album that enbodies (and pulls off at least decently)everything that is good about music, or at the very least, good about it's genre. It immerses me in it's stories or it's sound(or both), it remains potent after listening and i'll continue listening it for a long time. Example: OK Computer.
4.5: A 5 album with one glaring grievance(or several small ones) that i can't ignore. Example: In the court of the Crimson King.
4. An awesome album as a hole, but with several flaws. It may or may not immerse me, but if it does, then at points, it completely drops me from that. Enjoy most songs a lot, or enjoy all songs well enough. Example: Toxicity.
3.5: Basically a four, but this time it depends more on how catchy and fun it is. Example: God's Son.
3. An enjoyable with many boring moments, but not a waste and i'm satisfied with what i heard. Example: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
2.5: a Completely MEH album through and through. it may have some high points in contrast to many low ones, or it may be just be painfully average all the way. Regardless, I won't be listening to it again except(maybe) a couple of songs. Example: The Sickness.
2: A 2.5 but with mostly downs. Example: Plagues(Devil wears prada).
1.5: Annoying as hell, but with a few moments that for the most part made it not an utter waste. Example: KoRn lastest CD(forgot the name).
1. Horrible. Example: Knives(Aiden)
(I know i can't give those scores but i would if i could)
0.5: Worst. it gives me headache. Example: Basshunter(anything he did).
0: Ear rape. Example: Doomthrone. |

12.13.12 | 5 = amazing album, perfect or as close as an album can get; holds lots of emotional value; something I can listen to at any time and enjoy.
4.5 = really fucking good, sometimes almost a 5, sometimes not... a really solid album from front to back.
4 = the minimum requirement for "loving" an album. very solid release with plenty of great songs, very enjoyable.
3.5 = good album, some filler (usually) and other generally boring moments. Usually with a few standout tracks.
3 = decent album, usually a couple good tracks but generally boring
anything lower is kinda shit |

12.13.12 | 5 - "Classic" If you need an album that begs to be listened to over and over or every now and again over the years look no further.
4.5 - same as 5 but will a little less staying power.
4 - Same as previous two but maybe not with quite as much replay value.
3.5 - has plenty of merit but may not be in your permanent rotation. Has many redeeming qualities.
3 - Clearly a decent album but you can only enjoy it every now and again. Clearly a good album but just not for you.
2.5 - no better or worse than any other decent album you've ever heard. Most Clearchannel radio play goes here.
2 - not sure why this would even get radio play, has very little to keep ones attention. Lacking in quality in one of many catagories.
1.5 - has one or two redeemable qualities... just enough for you not to say you hate it.
1 - no reason for this to have ever been heard by someone with any discerning taste... ever. Hate lives here. |
