| Depeche Mode: 7 Hidden Gems
Here are 7 Depeche Mode tracks that are less well known/talked about for some reason or another. I'll exclude all album tracks and pick my my personal favourite B-Sides and rarities that any Depeche fan should check out if they've missed them. There are a few other interesting B-sides, but these are my picks as the most curious/unknown/best of the bunch [This list is in no particular order] | 1 | Depeche Mode But Not Tonight
[Era - Black Celebration, 1986] Any fan of Black Celebration's wonderfully dark and moody tunes will fall in love with this melancholic number. Originally a B-Side on the Stripped single it found its way onto the end of some US CD releases of Black Celebration. 5/5 | 2 | Dangerous
[Era - Violator, 1990] Dark and brooding, the vocal hook "dangerous" is addictive. B-Side on the Personal Jesus single, this track wouldn't have sounded out of place on the incredible Violator at all. 5/5 | 3 | Ghost
[Era - Sounds of the Universe, 2009] One of the B-Sides from the SOTU recording, it's puzzeling why Ghost didn't find its way onto the album, as its genuinely better than some album tracks. 4/5 | 4 | Shake The Disease
[Era - 1985] Released as a stopgap single in 1985 to plug the gap between 1984's Some Great Reward and 1986's Black Celebration, Shake the Disease is the last time you'll hear Depeche's old style before they went pitch-black in 86. Only available on Catching Up Depeche Mode/Singles 81-85. 5/5 | 5 | Martyr
[Era - Playing the Angel, 2005] Released as a single to promote the upcoming The Best Of, Vol 1, Martyr would be good enough to appear on the album, but also stand up as a single release like it did back in 2005. 3.5/5 | 6 | Fools
[Era - Some Great Reward, 1984] One for Alan Wilder fans, as this represents one of his few lyrical efforts and features that lovable industrial/synth-pop blend Depeche had at the time. 3/5 | 7 | Work Hard
[Era - People Are People, 1984] Orginally a B-Side from the Everything Counts single, it later appeared on the US-only 1984 compliation, People are People. This ones a bit of a silly choice, as is the song. It's a blast of ridiculous fun, go hear for yourself. 2.5/5 | |

03.20.11 | Definitely agree with you on 3 and 4 (especially Shake the Disease), not so much 1 and 7, I think songs like My Joy and Newborn are better. If they'd swapped the bonus tracks for SOTU with some of the filler it would have been a fantastic album | Kaleid
03.20.11 | Oh, and...oh. | Tom93M
03.20.11 | There are quite a few others good b-sides like sea of sin and happiest girl, both from violator era, but i tried to get a good mix of different time periods.
oh. (I dont even know why this is happening) : O

03.20.11 | I always assumed 1 was quite popular? I guess not. | Tom93M
03.20.11 | For some bizzare reason, But Not Tonight only appeared on the US version of Black celebration, so if you're from the US then you probably wont apprciate my choice to include it on the list, but for those in the UK (like myself) and EU, it might be a little less known. | bloc
03.20.11 | Ahh makes sense, I didn't know that. | Tom93M
03.20.11 | I'd be pretty pissed if i was around in '86 to pick up Black Celebration when it was first released and later find out that i didn't get the brilliant But Not Tonight on it.. Guess im lucky im from the 'internet age'.
