Acanthus
09.23.11 | Ha random album art ftw!
On a serious note I find most sites hard to trust now, Sputnik's got me. |
anarchistfish
09.23.11 | Well since I've joined sputnik, my music taste has turned much more into a typical sputniker's one (although not fully). I'm also much more critical of bands, their listeners, and people who misuse genre tags.
I guess that makes me a hypocrite too |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | I don't think it automatically turns one into a hypocrite, but it certainly makes you more critical in my experience. |
alachlahol
09.23.11 | so youre saying you find campus reviews more laughable than sputnik ones? |
alachlahol
09.23.11 | thats laughable in itself |
anarchistfish
09.23.11 | well I still listen to a lot of bands that are often compared to the ones I criticise. I also think of bands that are well liked on sputnik higher than those that aren't, even if I like them equally. A lot is probably subconscious. I've just been indoctrinated lol |
alachlahol
09.23.11 | whatever man i dont give a shit all i have is one questionf for you:
what are your thoughts on defeater? |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | @ alachlahol - one of the things I like (or maybe even love) about sputnick is how the staff know what they are talking about; for example if Trey reviews an Industrial alum you know he did more than just google "industrial" and the artists name. With other reviewers you often get the feeling that they review the album because it is new and therefor needs to be reviewed, not because they know anything about the genre or the band but just because it's their job. To me that makes my uni's music reviews laughable. |
anarchistfish
09.23.11 | "With other reviewers you often get the feeling that they review the album because it is new and therefor needs to be reviewed, not because they know anything about the genre or the band but just because it's their job. To me that makes my uni's music reviews laughable. "
I get this a lot with magazine reviews.
I read a review on TDWP's new album in a technology magazine and all it really said was "it's loud 3/5 very loud" |
anarchistfish
09.23.11 | also kerrang called framing hanley "post emo". does that even exist??
"what are your thoughts on defeater?"
decent band if not slightly overrated |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | "what are your thoughts on defeater?"
Don't like 'em, nothing against them just their not for me.
I also find this to be an issue with some game review sites, maybe it's just because I love music/select videogames so I feel entitled to a good solid review? |
bungy
09.23.11 | Try enjoying music rather than critiquing it as you listen.
Your objectivity is actually just a measure of how big of a tool douche face you are. You want to be below 78% or you should be sterilized and if it's below 65 you should be shot in the throat for being a pushover. The more 4's, the better person you are. |
porch
09.23.11 | scoot writes for kerrang? |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | I do enjoy it (music), and I enjoy critiquing it/being able to have the faculty of mind to do so. |
ffs
09.23.11 | came into this thread to talk about being an enormous faggot, which is what i was under the impression the sputnik effect was. |
anarchistfish
09.23.11 | mine is 96% hell yeah
"scoot writes for kerrang?"
lmao |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | Hey I suppose it could have multiple aspects? |
anarchistfish
09.23.11 | I think joining sputnik has been good for enjoying music. It means that I often listen through albums twice or three times before giving a rating so I never skip over music that could grow on me, which I would have been more likely to do before I joined. |
pizzamachine
09.23.11 | Try not to let it get to your head man. :) You might know a lot about music, but that doesn't mean everyone else does. It also doesn't mean you're above anyone else either. If people are brainwashed musically that's their own problem. That's I how look at it! |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | Oh I am well aware of how small my knowledge is, I like Sputnik for the occasionally bursts of learning that occur; there are some great writers and some really knowledgeable people here. |
pizzamachine
09.23.11 | Yeah it's a great place. This list should be featured! |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | Nah it'd knock Meatplows and Angel's down, I rather like having their's featured! |
alachlahol
09.23.11 | "I like Sputnik for the occasionally bursts of learning that occur" - Acanthus
you heard it from the man himself |
sifFlammable
09.23.11 | im considering writing reviews for uni but im not sure how im gonna accomodate everyone's shit tastes |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | I'd like to write opinion pieces, but sometimes I'm not really motivated at all. |
alachlahol
09.23.11 | you just wrote an opinion piece man youre already well on your way |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | I suppose that might be true alachahol, I haven't seen you around in a bit nice to see you posting again! |
Voivod
09.23.11 | Good thing about Sputnik is that it has EVERYTHING (or nearly everything...) and everyone can comment/contribute/learn on/-/- anything.
A music site that is second to none easily. |
scissorlocked
09.23.11 | sputnik corrupts |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | I've not really found one I enjoy better, but this is my only music site I've ever joined so I'm biased. |
alachlahol
09.23.11 | ha thanks man! ill have you know that kerrang arent the only post-emo fans out there; we have a resident post emo dude in our midsts of sputnik and it is none other than the great reviewer scoot
here is one quote that spurned my interest in this movement known as 'post emo':
"outreaching and emotionally-charged look at indie math rock (which is sometimes dubbed "post-emo")" - Scoot
scoot gave an opinion (just like you!) on how american football can prove that three man bands arent a joke and that they are almost as good as fall of troy:
"Certain bands, however, manage to test the limits of what three-piece bands can accomplish by thinking outside the box to create something truly phenomenal (such as The Fall of Troy with Doppelganger.)" - scoot
and this one really tugged at my heartstrings and made me realize just how beautifully an album can be described:
"this remains to this day a very influential group of songs that test the limits of the emotional spectrum and stay personally close to those who have grown to love them." - scoot
i can at least agree with you that most reviews are laughable when compared to such sincere work as what youll find in a scoot review |
Acanthus
09.23.11 | LOL man that's going to make my bike ride to work that much better, though I can't recall the last time I saw a Scoot review? |
wabbit
09.23.11 | I don't think most of you get what music is and that's really sad. |
alachlahol
09.23.11 | dude i wont lie to you you really dont want to be reading a scoot review while riding your bike the material is so engrossing it will suck you in like a tractor beam and next thing you know youll be crashing headfirst into a nissan altima |
tkxxx7
09.23.11 | "I don't think most of you get what music is and that's really sad. "
lol |
Acanthus
09.24.11 | I can easily see that view wonarabbit but this is the internet, taking things in anyway is hard to do (even in regards to my list topic). |
UnnamedOcean
09.24.11 | Since i joined Sputnik I find it increasingly more difficult to find anyone who listens to halfway decent music. |
clercqie
09.24.11 | I use Sputnik as my primary music source, because here the recommended music is way more varied than on any other site/magazine. There are a lot of "Sputnik albums" I really have come to love, but there is some stuff I still dislike, despite of massive acclaim here (Neutral Milk Hotel, anyone?).
As far as being more critical towards music goes, when I started here I had sort of the rush to rate every new album I heard, just to have a rating. Which kinda deprives the appreciation of the music. So now I still give ratings, but I don't tend to take them too seriously anymore and just enjoy the music. If something's good then it's good and giving it a 4, a 4.5 or a 5 doesn't make too much difference at times. |
Voivod
09.24.11 | I don't think most of you get what music is and that's really sad. / What is music wonarabbit? |

09.24.11 | Since i joined Sputnik I find it increasingly more difficult to find anyone who listens to halfway decent music.[2] |
Voivod
09.24.11 | @ lancebramsay
You mean in real life? |
Acanthus
09.24.11 | @clercquie - ever since I joined I always made it a point to only rate what albums I have, and I still do that. |
clercqie
09.25.11 | You mean albums you have physically? Because I've really listened to all the albums I've rated. That's why I don't have too many low ratings, because I'm not going to listen to some LMFAO shit just to have a rating on that |
Acanthus
09.25.11 | Ya, I've got all of them sitting here in one for or another so I can definitely see what you mean about ratings. |
Deviant.
09.26.11 | Never listen to any advice I give you |
Acanthus
09.26.11 | Hey you help out, there's been at least twice that I've been missing a word in my summary or something simialr that you caught. |
Irving
09.26.11 | ^ Except literally fucking Sowing. Everyone should do that bit. |
Irving
09.26.11 | (I was referring to Deviant's comment) |
Irving
09.26.11 | Also, I am suddenly overcome with the feeling that I'm not nearly helping out as much on people's reviews as I should. Neg =/ |
Acanthus
09.26.11 | I don't see how, normally you elve early reviews alone unless you really like the album; I think you keep a good record of commenting after the first 5 reviews or so. |
Samshine
09.26.11 | i've always wanted to review but in all seriousness, i'm scared that you guys will rip me to shreds. |
someguest
09.26.11 | You have to start somewhere. |
Waior
09.26.11 | i think the general reviewing crowd is pretty accepting of new reviewers atm
but i'm not really sure actually
nevermind |
tkxxx7
09.26.11 | You should, Sam. also stop commenting on threads when I'm about to. |
Samshine
09.26.11 | Yeah, that's what I've been thinking... then again, who gives a shit what you losers think.
jk, i lovee you all. |
Waior
09.26.11 | well (initially) the less shit you give about what we think the better... it gets you past worrying what other people would
think of your writing. or so in theory! |
toxin.
09.26.11 | Yeah I'm a bigger asshole about music than I was one year ago.
A shame, but then again, who doesn't like being a condescending, elitist bitch? |
Irving
09.26.11 | Me. |
tiesthatbind
09.26.11 | No one's as ruthless on this site as me. |

09.26.11 | and secretly in your head, you're proud of how much of a better person you are for it. ;) |
someguest
09.26.11 | kid next to me in investments thought he was the most elite shit this side of the outhouse for listening to opeth |
Waior
09.26.11 | I enjoy being a condescending, elitist bitch like no other (on the internet) but on the occasion, I feel guilty and blow up into a thousand apologetic pieces. |
BallsToTheWall
09.26.11 | I feel that I need to dress more pseudo goth to fit the image I create for myself online and offline because well I dress normal and it bores the shit out of me, Waior at least has the hipster look down to a pat. I want the phantom of the opera masks, Film Noir getups and everything. |
Samshine
09.26.11 | ^ this |
Waior
09.26.11 | i am the hippest poorest most occasionally actually homeless hipster we've got
and you dress TOO NORMAL. if you got a mask i'd be pleased though |

09.26.11 | I embrace the theatrical aspect of life so well I just need to go all the way. |

I think if you mean well and write half decently you shouldn't have anything to worry about, especially if it's your first review. |
Scoot
09.26.11 | "alachlahol has not written any reviews yet"
yeah shut the fuck up |
ChrisHansen
09.26.11 | "I think if you mean well and write half decently you shouldn't have anything to worry about, especially if it's your first review."

09.26.11 | "People will be assholes regardless."
It actually depends on what you review in a way. |
Uranium
09.26.11 | most reviews on here are legit. it is the comment section that really fucks this website up. |
ChrisHansen
09.26.11 | True, but there are a ton of users who will bash your work without even reading it. |
UnnamedOcean
09.26.11 | Yeah some people on this site... I only rip on a review when it is genuinely bad, and you don't really find many. I'm impressed at how good the users here are at reviewing. |
ChrisHansen
09.26.11 | As am I. As far as I'm concerned, though, don't overly criticize someone else's work when you have nothing to show for yourself. |
liledman
09.26.11 | "It actually depends on what you review in a way."
definitely. some albums attract retards. |
Scoot
09.26.11 | otherwise you get cool dawgs like alachlahol that spend their days hardcore negging reviews and writing long winding diatribes about other users |
Metamorphosis
09.26.11 | Sputnik has introduced me to many artists and expanded my interests on artists I was already digging (like Converge and Thrice). It has given me the tools to critique music, which is something I thoroughly enjoy doing, but at the end of the day, what I like is what I like. I have a tremendous amount of 4's in my ratings, which I think is a good sign. A few 5's and 4.5's and such. I don't think I'm too critical because of Sputnik, just a little more informed. |
Acanthus
09.26.11 | "a little more informed."
This sums it up nicely!
@Samshine - you should man, pick an album that calls your name and go for it! I still only review every now and then, it's fun to see what other people think of your reviews.
@Balls - go for it man, idk about the pseudo goth but full on goth's great. |
