08.17.12 | Agreed with the Nirvana stuff. People can think they're overrated and all that shit if they want but without them getting big alot of great 90s music wouldnt have been heard and they killed alot of shitty music overnight. They opened the door up to so much stuff getting popular and are probably the most influential band in that regard of the past 25 years. |

08.17.12 | Pixies had a slight resurgence at this time because the few classes before us didn't realize what they had passed on. I was introduced to the pixies in the summer of 92' by a friend. she was probably introduced to them by her older sister. |

very true. but didn't the same thing happen in the late 90s when Korn, Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach were ruling the airwaves? |
omnipanzer
08.17.12 | well to some extent it happens any time a band breaks big but this was completetly different. They were pushing cock rock and white pop groups and that's it. This was a suspend all current projects and get me more like them type situation. |

08.17.12 | They were a group they thought they could make a little money with that suddenly out sold Platinum selling pop groups and the phone lines were blowing up for this one group that had no known contemporaries. Obviously it didn't take long to go back to the well for more. The only reason we know what the Seattle scene even was. kwith one stroke New Kids on the Block was fucking over and every dude I know rejoiced. |

08.17.12 | I guess it depends on who you're referring to as "they"
in 1991 records by the likes of Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM and U2 sold millions |

omnipanzer
08.17.12 | "in 1991 records by the likes of Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM and U2 sold millions"
U2 was considered a christian group
Metallica, cock rock... above average but more of the same and fuck the Black album dude.
Red Hot Chili Peppers is and was a singularity that was played a lot on collage radio
REM collage rock.
U2, REM and RHCP were all promoted by secondary channels not prime time baby. |

omnipanzer
08.17.12 | even though they were all being played on MTV it was during designated times like
Metallica would have been pushed on Headbangers Ball.
U2 probably prime time because considered wholesome.
REM and RHCP would have been on during an alt hour or some shit.
pop dominated the time slots like it does now. |

08.17.12 | lol did you just call Metallica cock rock? U2 only had one semi-Christian album... and I'm not sure how that's relevant anyways.
are you just talking about what the radio stations played in the town you grew up in? |
omnipanzer
08.17.12 | No
U2 were always considered a christian group where i lived until probably the mid 90's they may not
have been but that is how they started and it's a hard pigeon hole to reshape.
okay lets back up...
"in 1991 records by the likes of Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, REM and U2 sold millions"
Okay so 4 established rock bands also had good years that year. What is your point? |

08.17.12 | Interesting list. The Grateful Dead have some pretty good stuff. I actually prefer some of their 60's stuff to their 70's albums.
Really
digging their debut atm, it's a lot more bluesy than most of their later stuff which might be one of the reasons I prefer it. |
omnipanzer
08.17.12 | Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are all you really need from them IMO but first five are all pretty good. |
Inveigh
08.17.12 | I guess I was just talking about your statement to the effect of "the radio played nothing but hair metal, New Kids and classic rock" when the radio was actually playing #1 hits by U2, REM, Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers.
I love me some grunge and am old enough to remember its heyday, but I feel like a lot of people who were aged 10-14 during the early 90s overstate the revolutionary aspect of it. I was originally referring to the mindset of "man the music that came out when I was a teen changed EVERYTHING" -- it's prevalent with every generation, grunge was no more revolutionary than any other highly popular music movement. |

Oh yah I'm willing to admit I'm overstating a bit. It was just nice to finally see music I actually wanted to hear take front stage with regards to videos on MTV and air play on the radio. I had not intended to say nothing else was being played. All of those you mentioned were getting air play and were popular but nirvana shot out ahead of even the shit they were probably incentivized to play. It was just nice to actually give a shit about what was on for a change. Does that bring it back down to a realistic level? |
omnipanzer
08.17.12 | "The Smiths and Bauhaus rule. What the fuck?"
To some... not to me. I can not listen to either of them on a loop and prefer not to listen to them at all. I remember when the "tribute to the Smiths" album came out... and a buddy of mine was like SEE THEY WERE INFLUENTIAL. My only response is, not to me man. |

also, the black album was fine. definitely not as good as the first 4 albums, but definitely not worth any negative comments. |
