| The Greatest Solos: Part 1
So many solos, so little time. This is the first of what I'm sure will be many lists on guitar
wankery, and I'm sure you've seen a couple of these on other lists ... but I just felt the need to
share the first few solos that I will never grow tired of. | | 1 | Between the Buried and Me

The whole song is a freakin' solo ... but it's also just that: a song. I have a lot of respect for Tosin Abasi,
he's an amazing player. | | 3 | Phinehas
I Am The Lion
A little known Christian band (I think, anyway; I could be wrong) that actually has unreal chops. This song
has an insane solo, and a couple fantastic breakdowns that fit the song. Solo is huge, though. | | 4 | Periphery
All New Materials
Misha Mansoor channels Allan Holdsworth so well in this solo. Wicked solo with a lot of awkward
chromaticism that really sounds great! | | 5 | The Number Twelve Looks Like You
If They Holler, Don't Let Go
I wish they didn't break up. The solo that ends this song is unbelievable; such a tasteful blend of shred,
vibrato-bar phrases and string-skipping. Alexis Pareja is, in my mind, one of the greatest underrated
guitarists in the metal scene. | | 6 | The Faceless
Coldly Calculated Design
A nice melodic break from the systematic chaos that is The Faceless. Michael Keene is a great guitarist
(who barely uses his pinky finger, if you've seen him live ... weird style of playing, but who cares? He rips). | | 7 | Good Old War
Weak Man
The guest solo at the end, simply, just "fits." | | 8 | Darkest Hour
Tranquil
So many Darkest Hour songs have epic solos, but I have to give this one to Kris Norris ... again, another
example of a solo that really fits the song, shredding and tapping included. | | 9 | Blessed by a Broken Heart
Show Me What You've Got
Right after a ridiculous breakdown comes this insane solo. I think this is one of the fastest solos on this list.
I imagine Shred Sean wrote it for the sole sake of blowing minds. Success. | | 10 | After The Burial
Ometh (Re-release version)
The re-release version was so much better because the drums were actually tolerably audible during the
breakdown and subsequent solo trades between Justin and Trent. These guys rip, and helped pioneer the
use of 8-strings in metal. On top of that, they've written a solo in a major key, something that seems
relatively foreign for many metal bands. Wicked solo. | |

05.08.10 | emim, "the tides" is probably their craziest solo technically speaking, but carrigan sounds too much like norris, and i feel like norris was the soul of darkest hour (sadist nation? undoing ruin? even deliver us ... norris was the bomb)
