Families are only allowed to have one male and one female child. I believe the child is executed if there are two males or two females. It's a pretty interesting book.

Like a less stringent worldwide one child policy for a few hundred years, as long as we don't turn into a police state in the process... at the end of the day, we're not ruining this planet. This planet has been here for ~3 billion years before us and it will most likely be here for billions of years when we're gone. Nature will destroy us at some point anyway.
