02.09.13 | List concentrates on the preiod when the scene was at the hight of it's popularity. The albums included are what I consider to be the most important in the history of the scene. |
jefflebowski
02.09.13 | this demands a feature, great stuff. hatfield and the north's s/t is the first album i remember likeing, probably for the awesome song titles |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks man. Yeah the song titles on that album are great. |
elephantREVOLUTION
02.09.13 | great list. this sounds like my style but i don't think i've listened to any of these albums. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks. If you like prog, psych or jazz fusion, which looking at your ratings I can see you do, you will probably enjoy most of these. Caravan and Soft Machine are probably the most essential bands from the scene so I'd say start with them if you're interested. |
manosg
02.09.13 | Great idea/concept Jamie. You should do that more often. Unfortunately, I haven't heard any of these. Where does one start? |
RiffOClock
02.09.13 | dont dig wyatt but that one gong album ive heard was sweet gd list will check some of these when im done venn raining |
greg84
02.09.13 | I haven't heard any of those, but it's a kick-ass list. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | @manosg: Thanks. I'd say start with 7 and 9 and then move on to Soft Machine and Gong. I also highly recommend checking out Steve Hillage's solo stuff, particularly Fish Rising.
@Riff: Wyatt is far from my favourite on here but I do quite like Rock Bottom. Sweet, yeah Gong rule. You'd probably dig some of the other stuff Hillage did, check out 10 and 25. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | 10 and 15* |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks Greg. |
Havey
02.09.13 | de powers ov hanson

balazs
02.09.13 | Very nice list, thanks! |
Dimor
02.09.13 | Great list Jamie. Love the Canterbury scene |
Jethro42
02.09.13 | Was hoping to see both National Health and Hatfield and the North, and it was there. List is full of win. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks guys.
and thanks for the feature. |
ViperAces
02.09.13 | what is it? like diamond head? |
YankeeDudel
02.09.13 | cool i heard soft machine, caravan, hatfield, khan, hillage, gong, and wyatt. all rule. scene rocked. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | "what is it? like diamond head?"
lol no not at all. You'll probably like a lot of these actually Viper seeing as you like a quite a bit of prog. |
ViperAces
02.09.13 | yea i was kidding ;)
ive already heard some good things about soft machine and caravan(cant remember where), so ill get their highest rated albums first |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Yeah Soft Machine and Caravan are good places to start. |
KILL
02.09.13 | wow awesome list, haveto check a lot of these, def need to check egg i heard a bit about em |
sumyunguy
02.09.13 | awesome list! those first 2 National Health albums are impossibly good. also, although i'm sure you've probably heard them, the first 2 Isotope albums are really good, as are the first 2 Matching Mole albums (Wyatt on drums!) Another obscure band, Quiet Sun, had a really solid album called Mainstream. Personally, the single greatest musician in the entire Canterbury Scene to me has to be the great keyboardist Dave Stewart. Can a resume get any better than Arzachel, Egg, Khan, Hatfield and the North, National Health and the Bill Bruford Band? |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks KILL. Yeah definitely check out Egg, they rule.
@Yankee: Make sure you check out Arzachel seeing as you like most of Hillage's other stuff. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | @sumyunguy: Thanks bro. I haven't heard Isotope, need to check them out. And yeah that sure is one hell of a resume. |
bungy
02.09.13 | Can you rec me two or three? I was thinking 6,9,13 |
wanderlust
02.09.13 | Nice stuff here. gl |
YankeeDudel
02.09.13 | yea ill def check the others jamie
and bungy those are good places to start yeah, since those are the biggest albums in the genre. check Gong too though for sure. |
AngelofDeath
02.09.13 | Great list. There's only a handful of CS albums I've really gotten into, but it's a pretty neat genre, nonetheless. |
YankeeDudel
02.09.13 | I just found a sample btw. 3rd song on that Arzachel album def sounds just like an MF Doom song. Dangermouse must be a canterbury fan lol.

foxblood
02.09.13 | good list, i'm not too knowledgeable about canterbury stuff |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks everyone.
@bungy: Those are definitely good ones to start with although personally I'd say 11 (or any of the Radio Gnome trilogy) are more essential than 13. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Sup Cap. I still have a hard time choosing which Caravan album I prefer, 7 or 9. Both are so good. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | I seem to like 7 more than most people, dunno why. I actually think it might just edge it as my favourite. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | You heard 3, Captain? |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Sweet, it's a great album. Pretty much everything Hillage was involved in troughout the late 60's and through the 70's rules. |
GiaNXGX
02.09.13 | hey jamie... see what you did there ah ;] |
GiaNXGX
02.09.13 | I might do a ''rock in opposition explained' then, cuz that movement is also fantastic. Good list. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | haha, it was you that suggested I did it.
Thanks bro. |
YankeeDudel
02.09.13 | yea rock in opposition is cool too. samla, henry cow, present, art zoyd, univers zero, thinking plague, art bears, and aksak. you should do it gian just keep it short n sweet like this. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Yeah I'd definitely like to see that list too. |
SgtPepper
02.09.13 | Good list. I've never heard 14-17, will check them out.
Jamie, you are a hero with these lists. |
GiaNXGX
02.09.13 | yeh i'm a hero thanks! jk but for some reason I always thought Egg played krautrock lol |
wacknizzle
02.09.13 | Holy shit, this list fucking rules. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks Paperback.
lol GiaN, I only did this because you suggested I did. Although I did think about doing one quite a while ago but never got round to it. |
SgtPepper
02.09.13 | @Gian
No, they're British not German. Also they're kind of straightforward Prog/slight jazz fusion (even though krautrock follows that vein). Good band though.
And you've got lists too though. |
JamieTwort
02.09.13 | Thanks wack. |
SgtPepper
02.09.13 | *and you've good lists too though.(@Gian) |

ButteryBiscuitBass
02.10.13 | I love you Jamie! |
JamieTwort
02.10.13 | Thanks guys. I can't take all the credit for the idea though as it was GiaN that urged me to do a Canterbury list. |
JamieTwort
02.10.13 | In what way? |
JamieTwort
02.10.13 | Oh I see. |
Nagrarok
02.10.13 | Great list and great idea as well. Only heard 6, 9 and 11 out of these. |
JamieTwort
02.10.13 | Thanks Nag. You should check out 7, I think I personally prefer it to 9, only just though. |
JamieTwort
02.10.13 | I also recommend you check out 15. |
Nagrarok
02.10.13 | Will do. |
ViperAces

evilford
02.11.13 | congrats on the feature, great list w/ great information. haven't heard any of these but I'm due to get into some real prog soon |
JamieTwort
02.11.13 | Thanks ford. |
Penlord
02.12.13 | why is volume two not here
Like the Soft Machine's first and third are pretty good but two is so much better |
JamieTwort
02.12.13 | This list is more a timeline showing the most historically important albums of the scene rather than the movement's best albums. So obviously their debut was a bigger part of the scene's history as it was one of the pioneering albums of the movement along with Caravan's debut. Third marked a change in style for the band and is also one of the most famous albums from the scene which is why I included that one over Volume 2.
Besides, I actually prefer their debut over Volume 2. |
Penlord
02.12.13 | Yeah I get that. The first one just doesn't flow nearly as well and the third one has too many dull parts although the amazing parts on it are like their best stuff. |
JamieTwort
02.12.13 | Third is slightly overrated imo, so I guess I agree with you on that one. Still a great album though. |
TheNotrap
02.12.13 | Great list with lots of stuff worth checking out. |
JamieTwort
02.12.13 | Thanks Notrap. |
MO
02.12.13 | awesome list buddeh |
JamieTwort
02.12.13 | Cheers bro. |
Jethro42
02.12.13 | I need to check out for some more Soft Machine |
JamieTwort
02.12.13 | I highly recommend their earlier stuff (first 2 albums), as I've mentioned in the list it's a lot more psychedelic than the more jazz influenced stuff that came after. |
omnipanzer
02.12.13 | Been kicking some major arse with the lists lately JT.
Get some free time lately? |
omnipanzer
02.12.13 | Hi MO, Jethro and Notrap. |
JamieTwort
02.12.13 | Hey omni. Yeah, my uni workload has been a bit lighter of late so I've had a little bit more time on my hands. |
manosg
02.12.13 | Hi Jamie, just listened to 7 and it's good. After listening to some other stuff I will proceed to 9. |
Jethro42
02.12.13 | Thanks for the infos, Jamie.
Hello omni! |
JamieTwort
02.12.13 | @manosg: Sweet, glad you liked it. 7 is definitely one of my favourite Canterbury albums.
You're welcome, Jethro. |
NightProwler
