Converge is about other stuff than breakdowns. And I haven't heard Tragedy play a single one, and they're probably like the best hardcore punk band post 2000.

Hardcore punk seems like a heavier, faster and sadder sounding punk to me, no breakdowns to be found anywhere. So how did breakdowns come to define metalcore? O_o

How does this liken them to hardcore bands or early metallic hardcore bands?" in time they just started to be labelled that way. big difference from then and now obviously but if you see the in-between then you'll see why it came to be that way. idk somewhere around early 00's the open palm riffing came to be a common element, and (from what I'm guessing) that was what people were most influence by and wanted to sound like, the next shadows fall or god forbid. now people are trying to be the next devil wears prada or whatever shitty band.

What I was asking about was why do MODERN bands like Atreyu, A7X or Asking Alexandria get called metalcore, while they're not half as abrasive as hardcore punk, don't utilize drum patterns characteristic of punk and use clean singing more reminescent of teen rock bands than of hardcore punk. Moreover, why the breakdowns that are the STAPLE of band categorization into metalcore these days, didn't play a bigger role in hardcore and actual metalcore bands' music than they did in say, Metallica's? That's what confuses me. Metallic hardcore sounds like a mix of hardcore and metal, while today's metalcore is just metal with too many breakdowns and immature lyrical themes. Why the transition? How is this breakdown abuse "hardcore" in any way?
