09.13.17 | Win win win! There are couple I've probably never heard, and for the biggest part, I'd need to refresh my memory. Slow Show is probably a top 3. |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Cheers Jethro. That's the thing about them, you glean something new almost everytime you listen to this band. At least I do. |
DoofusWainwright
09.13.17 | - Slow Show...the 29 years section coming in for the first time
- Brainy, that drum intro
- Sorrow - the backing vocal note hold on 'rag and BONE'
- Demons - all the first double-verse 'I am secretly in love with everyone I grew up with...do my crying underwater...etc' so great
- Think You Can Wait - last verse, 'I'm thinking, it's simple ...I'll sell apples and ice water at the temple...and I won't make trouble' just incredible stuff, the way he sings this is just devastating.
There's loads and loads more. |
Sunnyvale
09.13.17 | List rules. The "na na na na na na na" part in Friend Of Mine is another perfect moment. |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Oh shit I forgot about the drums on Brainy Brainy Brainy |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Agreed Sunnyvale |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Keep going Doof, I think you've inhaled this band even more than the rest of Sputnik, and that's saying something. |
theBoneyKing
09.13.17 | Brainy has the greatest drums of all time |
Sunnyvale
09.13.17 | I haven't gotten super into the new album yet, but it's given me an excuse to listen to their back catalog a ton, so can't complain. |
theBoneyKing
09.13.17 | I need to not listen to their old stuff for the next few months to allow the new one to come into its own because every time I think of Boxer or High Violet I just think about how inferior the new one is. |
BigHans
09.13.17 | I should have listed how Abel is pretty much the best indie rock song ever or at least top 200 |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Honorable Mention - any live version of Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks |
theBoneyKing
09.13.17 | Slow Show is the best indie rock song bar none |
Sinternet
09.13.17 | i very much endorse this list
i'd add the key change in secret meeting after 'i had a secret meeting in the basement of my brain' |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Shit, it just might be, Boney |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Yes Sinter, I agree hard on that one |

09.13.17 | The moment in Slipped where Matt goes "I don't want you to grieve, but I want you to recognize...alright" |

09.13.17 | Slow Show fo sho! |
BigHans
09.13.17 | I need to embrace Slipped more. |
theBoneyKing
09.13.17 | Slipped is one of their more quietly crushing songs |
CugnoBrasso
09.13.17 | I like the beginning of Squalor Victoria and Buzzfeed Ohio for the same reason, the orchestral fade-in is magical and the way the piano cuts through in SQ is out of this world. The vox organ at the end of Mistaken for Strangers also gives a nice touch, specially because the notes sound so random and out of the chord. Fanfares at the end of Fake Empire are also good. Backing vocals on Lit Up deserve a nobel. Awesome band even if I didn't enjoy their new album quite as much, but maybe I just need to listen to it a bit more. |
BigHans
09.13.17 | I Should Live in Salt and Hard to Find are massively underrated I think.
Also, I just discovered Mansion on the Hill yesterday, holy shit that's a pretty one |
DoofusWainwright
09.13.17 | Thanks Hans, the new album has confirmed The National are my all time favourite band |
Slex
09.13.17 | When that INSANE drumbeat kicks in on Fake Empire I lose my shit no matter what |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Excellent take Cugno, I wish I knew more about music composition so I can pick out more intracies. The most musical I get is playing G/C9/D chords on my acoustic and pretending I know how to play guitar. |
BigHans
09.13.17 | I always forget about the drums on Fake Empire. I always think of it as a piano based song about pies and Barry Obama. But it rules. |
butcherboy
09.13.17 | lovely list.. demons and lemonworld would be there for me for the lyrics.. |
DoofusWainwright
09.13.17 | [2] incredible lyrics in both those tunes, both would make a top 15 National songs for me |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Both of those songs are great, but I never think of them unless they come up on my totally rad best National songs Spotify playlist, if that makes sense. |
butcherboy
09.13.17 | totally makes sense.. they do hold my favourite Berninger lines
I am secretly in love with everyone that I grew up with..
I gave my heart to the army, the only sentimental thing I could think of..
Beauty! |
BigHans
09.13.17 | There was a time in like August of 2011 when I thought Runaway was the best song ever written. |

09.13.17 | band does have a criminal amount of fantastic songs.. |
trackbytrackreviews
09.13.17 | Humiliation, the screaming outro they do when they play it live! |
BigHans
09.13.17 | I NEED to see them live. I live in Fargo. The closest they are coming is Chicago, which is a 1000 mile drive. I might just fucking do it. |
DoofusWainwright
09.13.17 | 'Humiliation, the screaming outro they do when they play it live!'
Yeah, I call that their 'heavy metal' version - it's incredible.
Greatest live band, no one is more surprised than me. |
Artuma
09.13.17 | "I NEED to see them live. I live in Fargo. The closest they are coming is Chicago, which is a 1000 mile drive. I might just fucking do it."
that's the kinda dedication this band deserves |

09.13.17 | I heard Matt just gets rip roaring bombed on stage. I need to seed this. |

09.13.17 | Lit Up - "and yeah she comes to attention when you come up to me too fast" |
BigHans
09.13.17 | Lit Up rules. I should have put I Need My Girl on here even if its a cliché. |
butcherboy
09.13.17 | that's the beautiful part of The National, and any band that writes so much about heartbreak.. they make cliches sound like pure poetry.. |
Ryus
09.13.17 | i need my girl is one of my least favorite national tracks tbhh
nice list! |
BigHans
09.13.17 | They really do. And honestly, I Need My Girl is a fucking masterpiece. |
cylinder
09.13.17 | Very nice list! Only songs here I don't adore are 11 and 12.. and I guess when I really think about it I'm not suuuper big on 5 either. Defining moment in Apartment Story for me tho is that first "so worry not.." when a nice pensive little rock song suddenly becomes an expanse. All the Wine is the absolute shit as well. Them twinkles |
cylinder
09.14.17 | Also: -the bit where you can suddenly hear the piano after the second chorus of Lit Up
-Fake Empire, when the drums kick in (obvs)
-Little Faith, those clicking drumsticks in the second verse
-Fireproof, when the bridge quickly leads right back to the chorus (Jennifer you are not the only one..)
-both verses of Day I Die
-Empire Line, when the heavy drums come at the last chorus
-the solo in Carin, the way it just pops out of the silence |
theBoneyKing
09.14.17 | ^ that solo in Carin might just be the best "moment" on the new album |
cylinder
09.14.17 | Definitely like top 3 at least
Ahem... "I'll overdo it":
-the second chorus of The System.. when the drums go into high-gear. That might actually be the best moment on the new one for me, besides the entirety of Day I Die
-and omg how could I forget, I THINK IM LIKE TENNESEE WILLIAMS |
Clumseee
09.14.17 | When he says Let it Be he's referring to the Replacements record.
THIS PART IN DEMONS:
Oh, everyday I start so great
Then the sunlight dims
Less I've learned
The more I see the pythons and the limbs
Do not know what's wrong with me
Sours in the cup
When I walk into a room
I do not light it up
Fuck |

09.14.17 | Brainy is an easy top 10 National tune |
theBoneyKing
09.14.17 | Love the creepy lyrics on Brainy
Think I'd better follow you around...
Like, take it down a notch Matt lol |
DoofusWainwright
09.14.17 | I remember listening to the drums in 'Brainy' and thinking 'there was nothing like this on 'Alligator', this is incredible, a sound of their own'. Then Squalor's drums came in and I was 100% sold. Then I digested the album as a whole and realised this band were going to be cult favourites. |
theBoneyKing
09.14.17 | Alligator I imagine was sort of a fluke, they were still naive in a way, and happened to make a great record. Boxer was when they became true masters of the craft. |
DoofusWainwright
09.14.17 | 'Alligator' was the travelling salesman coming up with a barrow full of weird glass wares, could be interesting/revolutionary. Bit of a random selection of stuff.
'Boxer' is where he returns with just one glass invention - he holds it up and it illuminates. He's just invented electricity, this is a light bulb.
The other glass stuff got ditched. The potential for genius was in there but it was buried and diluted under a load of lesser ideas. |
theBoneyKing
09.14.17 | Personally I think Sad Songs is the salesman, there are a lot more ideas on that one than Alligator |
DoofusWainwright
09.14.17 | True, 'Sad' and 'Alligator' are both like that. Maybe Alli is him getting his act together.
The debut is...he's bought the barrow, it's still empty and he's too weak to move it anyhow. |
DoofusWainwright
09.14.17 | Anyway, not another day of Doof negatively comparing 'Alligator' to the sequels. No one wants it ;D
Check my dig instead |

09.14.17 | does that make Sleep Well Beast the cheap-looking cake warmer that no one really wants or has a use for? |

09.21.17 | They really are the best band ever. I honestly am equally as happy when people don't understand as when they do. Brand New released Science Fiction this year and that halted my world. I'm fairly certain the only band who could redirect my attention was The National, and dammit they've done it. |
