Offseasons Ranked + Chicago Scene

All the major moves have been made for the NBA offseason, at least in regards to free agency (we could still see some trades). Now everyone's grabbing up the role players and filling out their rosters. List is a ranking of the top 6 offseasons so far (team improvement) and 6 albums by local musicians I've had the pleasure of playing shows with, kicking it in basement studios or just throwing a few back. Also props to my boy Tugz (has a secret Sputnik account too) who rocked the mic solo last night with Phillip Morris, sorry I couldn't be there bro!

The Process of Addiction Has Its Cost

The Miami Heat. Duh. Do I really even need to explain? They kept the best player in franchise history around during the prime of his career (Dwyane Wade) and they signed the best wing player AND arguably the best power forward in the league. Now it's looking like they'll bring in former Rookie of the Year Mike Miller as a three point sharpshooter and frankly, it doesn't matter who else they sign. The NBA Finals are theirs to lose.

The Boston Celtics. As much as I hate to admit it, it was almost a best-case scenario for Celtics fans. Expectedly, they were able to re-sign Paul Pierce. However, spreading the money out over a longer deal creates additional cap flexibility in the present, and coupled with the lucky event of Rasheed Wallace's retirement they should be able to inject a little youth and athleticism to the roster through mid- and lower level exception signings. Keeping Ray Allen was HUGE, as before Doc Rivers came back he looked as good as gone. They should have enough to make one more run at a second championship with this group.

YOUR Chicago Bulls! Yeah, we struck out on the Big 3, but we got arguably the best player available after that in Carlos Boozer (you could make an argument for Stoudemire, but not at the money he got) and retained quite a bit of their cap space and were the only team chasing max free agents besides New Jersey that kept their core players on the roster. Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, Luol Deng and Taj Gibson would have formed a core that could have won 45 games on their own when healthy; however, after adding Boozer and Kyle Korver in addition to a few more players (currently waiting to see if the Magic match on our offer to JJ Redick) like Brad Miller, Roger Mason or maybe even adding a player or two through trades (Rudy Fernandez's name has been thrown around) the Bulls could arguably have as good a roster as any team in the Eastern Conference not named Miami. They're still young and relatively inexperienced, but with a new coach and assuming continued player development and health, the Bulls should be able to play with anyone next season.

Love In Analog

Oklahoma City Thunder. Yep, not even really a player in free agency but they quiety made a move last week that could be remembered as the biggest one of the summer when we look back upon this free agency period in 3 or 4 years. Locking in Kevin Durant for another 5 years was an incredibly forward-thinking move, because he could be the best player in the league very soon, at least offensively. They also picked up Cole Aldrich in the draft, addressing a huge need for size inside. Expect this team to challenge the Lakers in the West next year.

New Jersey Nets. Surprising, I know. Even though the Nets missed out on pretty much every recognizable name in the free agent market, they picked up a major player in the draft in Georgia Tech PF Derek Favors. He could be a Shawn Kemp in his prime like talent, and putting him next to Brook Lopez should solidify their post positions for the next decade. With Devin Harris and a few more promising young wing players (last year's draft pick Terrence Williams and 2010 free agent signings Travis Outlaw and Anthony Morrow) the Nets should improve vastly from last year and retain a TON of cap flexibility moving forward.

The Miami Heat. Yeah, I thought about putting the Wizards here for getting John Wall and Kirk Hinrich, but no, Miami needs another spot.
