| Biggest Improvements- Part One
Sort of an inversion of my previous 'Good bands/ artists that got horribly shite' lists- this list is of albums that were significantly better than the previous effort by their respective bands. | 1 | | Motorhead Overkill
Motorhead's 1977 eponymous debut was certainly not a bad album by any means but was a bit sedate compared to the material they were better known for. 1979's Overkill brought the raw, heavy swagger and killer riffs to fruition and set a new standard in rock and metal. | 2 | | David Bowie The Man Who Sold the World
Though Bowie scored his first hit with 'Space Oddity' off his second album in 1969, the album itself was a bit of a psych-folk duffter. His third album brought the hard rock and heavy metal elements that truly introduced the genius of Bowie to the world. | 3 | | Megadeth United Abominations
Megadeth had stagnated pretty much in the late 90's. Though 2004's The System Has Failed was an earnest return to metal following their ill-advised foray into radio rock, it was only with 2007's United Abominations that they truly hit their stride again. Not a bad song on here at all, even the redux of A Tout le Monde is great. | 4 | | Metallica Death Magnetic
Like it or hate it, there is no denying that Death Magnetic was infinitely better than the abomination that was St. Anger as well as the Loads. | 5 | | Aerosmith Pump
'Dude Looks Like a Lady' off Permanent Vacation and the redux of 'Walk This Way' with Run DMC revitalised the legendary bad boys of Boston after their nosedive in the early 80's, but Pump is what solidified them as an important act for the decade to come. | 6 | | Foo Fighters Wasting Light
Nothing they did since 'The Colour and the Shape' really lived up to that album and they got pretty bland and boring until Wasting Light reignited the energy that made the first two Foo albums so great. | 7 | | Deep Purple Perfect Strangers
After a string of classic albums, the Mark II lineup fizzled out and the subsequent efforts with David Coverdale on vox led to some lacklustre output. Thankfully, the Mark II lineup reformed and put out this smoking platter and all was right in the universe again. | |

03.16.16 | Great list, I agree with all of these. Don't know if you listen to any of these guys but these are some more albums I would add:
Anthrax - Worship Music
Black Sabbath - 13
Dream Theater - Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Iron Maiden - Brave New World
Judas Priest - Screaming for Vengeance or Painkiller
Machine Head - The Blackening
Rush - Clockwork Angels

03.16.16 | Nice idea. I thoroughly like all these albums, but their successors trump them in every way:
Dark Tranquillity: Skydancer -> The Gallery
Dir En Grey: The Marrow of a Bone -> Uroboros
Paradise Lost: Lost Paradise -> Gothic
My Dying Bride: As the Flower Withers -> Turn Loose the Swans
Iced Earth: Iced Earth -> Night of the Stormrider
