06.01.10 | crappy decade for hip hop... imo |

06.01.10 | It would have been a better decade had biggie still been alive :( |
Maniac!
06.01.10 | the 90's were the best music overall imo.
better hip hop
better rock (and grunge)
better metal
better death metal
better pop-rock
just...overall better I think :P
|
notorioussam23
06.01.10 | yeah... times were simpler pre 9/11... |

06.01.10 | I disagree about the 90s having better hip hop and I think the metal scene is balanced out by the 90s also having nu metal and rap metal. 90s was definitely better for more mainstream hip hop, but the 2000s underground scene is far better and more developed. |
notorioussam23
06.01.10 | Why do you think there is a better underground scene in the 2000's? Cause all those kids grew up on 90's hip hop. 90's > 2000's. |
Inveigh
06.01.10 | but all the 90s guys grew up on 80s shit, so 80s>90s??? |
Maniac!
06.01.10 | I would take ATCQ over any mainstream or underground hiphop of the 2000's
the modern underground is so great BECAUSE they are going back to the roots of hiphop. The roots of hiphop were sewn in the 80's and blossomed in the 90's. |
Inveigh
06.01.10 | I'm not sure Aesop Rock, P.O.S. or Cannibal Ox are going back to the roots of anything |
Maniac!
06.01.10 | ok, maybe. but still, you are telling me that they are better than:
cypress hill
wu tang
common
and atcq?
(among others) |
Maniac!
06.01.10 | mos def
nas
2pac
B.I.G.
de la soul

06.01.10 | I'm not saying any of those guys are better than Wu-Tang, but I can name probably 20 artists from this decade better than Cypress Hill, and 2 of Common's best 3 albums came out in the 2000s. And don't say that since Common came out in the 90s that he's a 90s rapper, because that would make ATCQ an 80s group. also, let's not forget that a lot of acclaimed Wu-Tang-affiliated albums came out in the 2000s (OB4CL2, Supreme Clientele, Fishscale). |

06.01.10 | I gotta agree with inveigh. the 2000s were an amazing decade for good hip hop. I'm not necessarily saying it was better than the 90's, but it's definitely not a blowout for the 90's. Jedi Mind Tricks, MF Doom, Deltron, Quasimoto, The Roots, Binary Star, Eminem, Ghostface, Kanye all released CLASSIC albums this decade. It's pretty close. As far as the 80s, I hate 80s hip hop with a passion. |
WeepingBanana
06.01.10 | no deltron 3030 or blackalicious or deep puddle dynamics or clouddead? lolwut? |
Inveigh
06.01.10 | also, Mos Def is primarily a 2000s guy, he only had one album out in the 90s. But if we're using that logic then de la and atcq are 80s groups. |
Maniac!
06.01.10 | i suppose its preferred flavor. No point in arguing opinions i suppose.
(i still think 90>00) |

06.01.10 | 5 should be 1, or at least higher than BP. |

06.02.10 | Kanye and 50 don't belong on this list. But I totally agree with 1. I would also add The Coup and Talib Kweli. |

06.02.10 | Good to see 'Food and Liquor' on here, I just discovered that album and it ain't so bad. Need Pharoahe Monch, though, along with a lot of other things that others have said already.
Also...as much as I respect Inveigh's knowledge of hip-hop, I'm inclined to agree with MuzikManiac on the whole 90's vs. 00's debate. There IS a much, much more organized underground scene, and its amazing...but the only reason its underground is because the mainstream just wants a dance single. The 90's underground scene wasn't as well formed because there wasn't a NEED for it like there is now in the new millennium.
Of course...that's all my opinion. |
Athom
06.02.10 | list needs to replace everything that isnt Outkast, Ghostface, and Clipse with Cannibal Ox, Binary Star, J Dilla, Nujabes, Pharoahe Monch, Madvillain, Edan, Quasimoto, Raekwon, Mos Def, Deltron 3030 and Cyne |

I totally agree, the underground and mainstream lines have become more blurred in the 00s and but overall the 90s was the best decade for hip-hop
btw #6 is the best of the decade nice to see some love for Scarface though |
Counterfeit
06.02.10 | No P.O.S. or Atmosphere? No Raekwon? grrr. decent though, kinda.. |

06.02.10 | No Craig David...this is an outrage! |

06.02.10 | POS and Atmosphere are great but they are nowhere near top 15 or 20 of the decade good. |
MUNGOLOID
06.02.10 | decent list. 14 would've made it on mine if it wasn't for the average production. |
Masochist
06.02.10 | Oh, yeah...also agree that Common, Ghostface, Outkast, Nas, The Roots and Eminem belong on this list. Good stuff! |
Inveigh
06.02.10 | God Loves Ugly and Audition are easily top 15 or 20 of the decade good
and on the 90s vs 00s debate, to me it's just like any other genre of music (and obviously it's just personal preference). Look at metal. In the 1970s and early 80s there wasn't a need for an underground scene, because it wasn't so saturated in the mainstream yet. So you had bands like Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Iron Maiden etc. readily available in record stores and on album radio for mass consumption.
After hair metal and (later) alt/nu metal there was a need for more underground scenes (see death metal and grind) to counteract the watered-down mainstream scene.
Same shit with hip hop. You have people that swear by Metallica, Maiden, Ozzy, Pantera, Slayer etc and don't like anything involving harsh vocals or blast beats (and some that just prefer older stuff to newer stuff) and people who don't like older metal as much because they don't think it's as advanced or whatever reason. There's people who prefer when hip hop was more mainstream and there's people who like the more indie/underground sound. That's my rambling take on it anyways. |

06.02.10 | rhymesayers releases were rather instrumental in getting me into hip-hop, but after a while they all sorta fell by the wayside. It's consistently good, but it doesn't blow me away like I used to. I blame Ant. |

06.02.10 | "yeah... times were simpler pre 9/11..."
yeah, it was before America got gay |

06.02.10 | dont agree with all of this but overall very quality list, especially 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 11, and 15 (which is very underrated by most folks imo) |
nttrbttrz
06.02.10 | Fishscale is a lot better than Supreme Clientele |

Rhymesayers was THE shit that got me back into hip hop after a 3 or 4 year metal and hardcore/punk phase. I listened to a lot of Wu-Tang and Outkast and shit growing up but just fell out of it after awhile. When I saw P.O.S. and Atmosphere in Jan '06 it was over. Rhymesayers fell off hard though, P.O.S. is the only one on the label still putting out great records imo. |
