01.26.11 | thought thrice was a christian band | uberspuck
01.26.11 | they are (at this point), but the most forgivably (and intelligently) Christian i've ever encountered | couldwinarabbit
01.26.11 | If Leonard Cohen wrote poetry I would read it. | acorncheese
01.26.11 | Agreed on 5. Outside of his dick-loving marching band fanatical fans, he's kinda underrated as a lyricist. | Masochist
01.26.11 | The band and the lyrics they write are influenced by Christianity, much like (as I recently found out myself on this very site) mewithoutYou...but neither one are strictly "Christian."
The difference, as I see it, is that a Christian band does what they do in the name of God and/or for His glory, whether by exalting Him directly in their lyrics (praise, teachings, "Christian Experience", etc.) or by giving other Christians a conduit through which they can reach Him on their own. Thrice, mewithoutYou, etc. use Bible lyrics and such in their songs perhaps as personal testimony, but I think it's more for rhetoric than it is for religious experience, and so I don't "technically" consider them "Christian bands" (keep reading, though).
That's just how I see it, though, and I didn't explain it well enough to really express it thoroughly. In truth, if you see them as a Christian Band, and you listen to their songs/read their lyrics with that in your mind, and if you use them to get closer to God, then fuck it, they're Christian Bands (which is exactly how I see mewithoutYou). | Bitchfork
01.26.11 | um stephin merrit duh | Masochist
01.26.11 | Oooh...also, speaking of mewithoutYou, I'd read that guy's lyrics as poetry. AMAZING lyricist, Aaron Weiss is. | keyboardxmosh
01.26.11 | As Cities Burn is another band of Christians that writes excellent non-Christian lyrics. | Bitchfork

01.26.11 | I actually wrote an English literature commentary for Godspeed You! Black Emperor's "The Dead Flag
Blues" as practice for the actual IB English poetry section. The lyrics were 100% poetry by anyone's
standards (though it was more a monologue than song lyrics really). | qwe3
01.26.11 | "If Leonard Cohen wrote poetry I would read it."
uh leonard cohen was a poet | couldwinarabbit
01.26.11 | I was joking. Death of a ladies man is my favourite book of poetry. | qwe3

01.26.11 | Kensrue? Really? I mean, he's a great lyricist, but I don't think I would call him a poet. Just immensely effective. Maybe that's just me, though. 'Beggars' is an incredible song. | BigTuna
01.26.11 | I agree Mr. Knott | robertsona
01.26.11 | yes to 2! | deepintheorchard
