| Top 10 Metal Albums Ever
The best metal albums of all time, as chosen by myself at this particular date | 10 | | Anathema Serenades
This is pure doom. Nothing of light, nothing of hope. And yet beauty still shines through. Remarkable. | 9 | | Drudkh Autumn Aurora
Hypnotic, calming, naturalistic black metal. Warning, this is not for the ADHD generation. | 8 | | Gojira From Mars to Sirius
A very slow grower, because at first listen the album seems overly long, overly repetitive, and too draining. Over time it opens up and becomes the masterpiece that it is. Flawless. My only problem with it is that it ends. | 7 | | Neurosis A Sun That Never Sets
There's no way to accurately describe the emotions this album evokes. I won't even try. It's fucking amazing. | 6 | | Paradise Lost Icon
Another of the Peaceville 3 (Anathema, MDB, Paradise Lost), but almost the opposite of the MDB album. Catchy, wonderfully written, and not a single lull. Particularly check out the end of the album to hear the creation of the gothic metal subgenre. Timeless. | 5 | | My Dying Bride Turn Loose the Swans
From the first sadness tinged notes of this masterpiece to the similarly string-dominated finale, no second of this album is wasted. Your River is easily one of the best metal songs of all time. Hell, every song is perfect. An album so good that despite a somewhat rocky career, MDB is still held in fairly high esteem. All because of this album. | 4 | | Ulver Bergtatt
Another astonishingly influential album. A beautiful marriage of folk and black metal. A direct inspiration for the godlike Agalloch. A direct inspiration for any black metal band that tried to make naturalistic music. Peerless. | 3 | | Katatonia Brave Murder Day
Quite possibly one of the most influential metal albums of the 90s. Astoundingly good, even after all these years. Mikael has never sounded better. Katatonia has never made anything even close to as good as this album in the days since its release. | 2 | | Agalloch The Mantle
A perfect combination of folk, post rock, and black metal. A defining album of the 2000s, easily one of the best, no matter the genre. | 1 | | Agalloch Ashes Against the Grain
This album never gets old. Its atmosphere is impeccable, the melodies are consistently strong, and everything combines to make pure awesome. | |
Counterfeit
06.14.10 | nope. | silkforcalde
06.14.10 | oh yes. only issue was i couldn't decide if i wanted to include Neonism and La Masquerade Infernale or not. So close to making it. Also Hail Horror Hail. Maybe in the top 10 best post black metal list | eternium
06.14.10 | Some really amazing albums here (8, 7, 2, and 1), but ehhhhh, not a great list.
Especially with the two top places being owned by the same band. | silkforcalde
06.14.10 | damn man how could you say 2 and 1 were great but not 3 and 4? Those are the two albums that inspired Agalloch. Hell, Pale Folklore basically sounds like a mix between Bergtatt and Brave Murder Day. | Athom
06.15.10 | You should check out:
Esoteric - Metamorphogenesis
Gorguts - The Erosion of Sanity
Worship - Dooom
Mournful Congregation - The June Frost
Corrupted - El Mundo Frio
Twilight - Monument to Time End
Nadja - Touched
Rapture - Futile
Ataraxie - Slow Transcending Agony | silkforcalde
06.15.10 | i have gorguts, esoteric, and rapture. all three are great bands. i'll check out the rest. | vanderb0b
06.15.10 | Lots of great stuff here, 4 is probably my favorite black metal album. | Smalley
06.15.10 | Wouldn't say Ashes is the best metal album, but it IS my 2nd favorite album (of any genre) from the previous decade, so yeah, I'm not too upset with that pick. | Apollo
06.15.10 | nope x 2 | IkarugaSoul
06.15.10 | That, sir, is a fine list, though it's probably more "personal faves" than "best ever" | AngelofDeath
06.15.10 | Expected to be pretty disappointed with this list, but 1 and 9 are in my top 3 faves ever. 3 and 4 are fantastic as well, certainly their best. | silkforcalde
06.15.10 | "That, sir, is a fine list, though it's probably more "personal faves" than "best ever""
is there such a thing as "best ever," in an objective sense? | couldwinarabbit
06.15.10 | sorry guys but Opeth and Converge are pretty much the only good metal ever. Mr. P likes Mike Patton though so he might be good. I just find is is a less talented trying to be edgy Neil Young wannabe. | BallsToTheWall
06.15.10 | A list that isn't predictable for once. That immediately makes you worthier than 90% of the site's population. Good list. | qwe3
06.16.10 | "only issue was i couldn't decide if i wanted to include Neonism and La Masquerade Infernale or not."
if you like Arcturus you have no right to criticize anyone's taste in music | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | qwe, stop flaunting your lack of taste. | Helvete
06.16.10 | agree with My Dying Bride, Agalloch, Ulver and Neurosis (though probably a different album), good list bro | fr33convict
06.16.10 | Don't think most of them are "top ten ever" material but all solid nonetheless. Oh and you've heard Gojira's album "The Way of All Flesh" right? Cause generally that one is accepted as thier best album. | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | Yeah, they are definitely all top 10 material and The Way of All Flesh is the worst Gojira album. Deal with it. | fr33convict
06.16.10 | Thier worst? I can understand you liking From Mars better but really, it's much better than The Link and Terra Incognita. | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | Oh, no way. Terra Incognito shits on it. Terra Incognito is almost tied for my favorite. The Link has a slight production issue but overall, it's still better.
The Way of All Flesh is the only one where I skip a bunch of the songs. The one with the Lamb of God vocalist is annoying. The somewhat middleish song with the long drum intro is way too long. There's a lot of problems with the album that the other ones don't have. | fr33convict
06.16.10 | Well, I'm not gonna force you to change your opinion, so...
I do love From Mars though. | Transient
06.16.10 | i think counterfeit summed it up best when he said 'nope.' | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | no, he didn't. It makes no sense. You can't say "nope" to someone's personal list and act like it means anything. It's an idiotic statement. | Transient
06.16.10 | nope. | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | Death, as in the band? Or as in the genre? I like doom and black metal way more than death metal. It'd be silly for me to include an album on my list just to represent a subgenre that i don't enjoy as much. | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | meh, death the band wouldn't even be in my top 1000, sorry | fr33convict
06.16.10 | The list isn't called "My Favorite Metal Albums Ever", it's called "Top 10 Metal Albums Ever". Therefore the simple statement "no" suffices as a perectly acceptable response. | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | There's absolutely zero difference between the two. They are the same thing. Identical. Methinks you need to read up on the word "opinion" and what it means. | KILL
06.16.10 | i dont like this user | KILL
06.16.10 | jump him someguest | silkforcalde
06.16.10 | Oh NO! Someone on the internet DOESNT LIKE ME! *gasp* | crazyblinddude
06.16.10 | ive only heard agalloch and katatonia. but they are pretty fucking fantastic. |
