| Adventurous Melodic Rock - Looking for Recs
Just listen to one of Spotify's new "rock" playlists and you'll see that today's current definition of the word is basically alt-pop with a more defined groove - a lot of 4-on-the-floor beats, conventional song structures, phoned-in anthemic choruses and lackluster instrumental work. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate all of those artists or song elements in and of themselves, but it just doesn't really register with me as the spirit of rock. And I can smell it from a mile away when a band is pandering to a current sound rather then following their own distinct muse. My favorite corner of modern rock lands somewhere more splashy, adventurous, and fun - here are some current favs. Rec me anything full of personality, good riffs and energy! | 1 | | Moon Tooth Chromaparagon
Progressive metal-rock hybrid with melody for days. Guitarist Nick Lee writes with such a catchy, unique flair and utilizes major key riffs in the sickest way. Their new album comes out tomorrow and I couldn't be more pumped. | 2 | | Dance Gavin Dance Mothership
Stupidly catchy. What Tilian and & Will are doing with fun, busy melodies is irresistible to me. Prefer this badboy to their latest due to its wilder energy, but their current trajectory is still golden. | 3 | | Puppy The Goat
If you're gonna write shamelessly pop-oriented rock - this is how you do it. Sabbath influenced riffs & NWOBHM packed into accessible, sing-along songs. | 4 | | Turbowolf The Free Life
Love at first listen. These songs have loads of drive and punchy riffs, yet the melodies stay at the forefront of everything. They treat rock like a playground and this whole album is an absolute romp. | 5 | | Greyhaven Empty Black
Chaotic metalcore that injects a surprising amount of emotive melodies without dipping into cliche pop structures and out-of-place sung choruses - this band makes it all work together beautifully. | 6 | | Torche Restarter
Nobody does sludge-pop better. Harmonicraft is admittedly more melody-driven, but this album has a hypnotic quality that I can't get enough of. | 7 | | Flaural Over Imaginary Cigarettes
Vibey, adventurous psych rock. Saw them live a few months ago & was super into it. | 8 | | Temples Volcano
Borderline psych-pop, yeah. But the but the melodies are ridiculously strong, the production lush - this band is following its own weird muse. | 9 | | Good Tiger We Will All be Gone
Very hit and miss album with some generic elements, but the best tracks here are killer. | 10 | | Coletta Mind and Time
DGD-influenced but with a psychedelic, smoother twist. Juicy. | |
Rolling Girl
03.28.19 | Fightstar - Be Human
Birdeatsbaby - Tanta Furia
The Dear Hunter - Act III or V to start
Thank You Scientist
The Venetia Fair - Every Sick, Disgusting Thought We've Got in Our Brain
Sonata Arctica - Pariah's Child
Dreamcar
Also if you like Anberlin and Fair to Midland, I'd think the rest of their discog would apply here too. | SlothcoreSam
03.28.19 | Mongol Horde- Mongol Horde
| DamnVanne
03.28.19 | DGD has so many imitators that they’re basically a genre now so you have that going for you. If you haven’t, check out Minus the Bear’s early stuff. Great guitar work, some cool songwriting and a whole lot of fun | 0xME
03.29.19 | Elder - Lore (any of their releases, you'll enjoy them)
Chaos Divine - Colliding Skies
obvious recs, but listen to Deep Purple (DP in Rock/Fireball/Machine Head)
| BookoftheFallen
03.29.19 | leprous - bilateral | TheMightyScoop
03.29.19 | I second Elder, but if you want something more melodic I'd suggest their latest, Reflections of a Floating World. | MrGlass
03.29.19 | Thanks to all for the recs!
I've jammed quite a few "swancore" bands (Dwellings & Coletta are the best so far IMO) and Elder's latest, Leprous, and Minus the Bear all rule. Will check out the others too. |
