05.22.11 | "Why is Music Has the Right to Children your Favorite electronic album?"
There are a lot of things that can impress you with electronic music - obviously there's production, melody, or even just cool beats, unique sampling, etc. I like all that, but I really like artists that capture an overall sound that is completely their own, and every other artist that releases similar material get labeled "so-and-so clones". The best examples on here besides BoC are probably Burial, Monolake, Fennesz, Trentemoller, Autechre, and Secede. BoC's signature sound comes from their obsession with nostalgia and they slave over every detail to ensure their music taps into those parts of your brain that give you that one of a kind experience of reliving your childhood (or even creating a pseudo nostalgiac experience). I love when music can go beyond just sounding good, and can actually manipulate my mood/feelings. Using warm analog synths, using children for their samples, repeating common things you learn growing up - colors, counting, saying I love you, the album flows perfectly using just the right amount of each of these. Rhythms usually remain simple, but an unintrusive beat is essential to get the most out of the textures. On top of this, some of the chords used (Turquoise Hexagon Sun) and melodies (Roygbiv) are some of the best I've ever heard, and some of the tones they use (An Eagle In Your Mind) are the most sinister I've heard. Plus, the interlude tracks lead into the songs seamlessly. So basically I just think it does everything right: Perfect production, great melodies, unique sampling/chords, perfect pacing, engrossing atmosphere, mood altering, ability to conjure images/memories, and an impressive attention to detail. MHTRTC captures it's unique sound and adds so much mystery and subtleties that you have to give it repeated listens. |
Deviant.
05.22.11 | I've never really thought of anything that BoC have done to be sinister |
luci
05.22.11 | Wow, thanks for the thoughtful response. I picked up on the main theme you mentioned of transporting you to earlier days of childhood with the distinctive features they place within their textures - the color-counting, children's laughter etc. Great to know that someone who loves the album as much as you do notes this as one of the main draws of the album. I find it interesting that you describe the beats as "unintrusive"; one of the issues I have with the sound is that the beats sometimes pull me out of the surreal drift of the synth work (most notably on "Rue the Wheel.") I think that the songs Sixtyten and Rogybiv are some of the best electronic tracks ever recorded though. I'll give it more attempts. |
luci
05.22.11 | @Deviant: I know this is predictable, but even Geogaddi? I agree that the word sinister has harsher implications but I understand why this music can be labelled as such. |
Yotimi
05.22.11 | Really? Just listen to those notes that come in at the 4:12 mark of An Eagle In You Mind. Or Beware the Friendly Stranger that puts children screaming really low in the mix during the fire crackles, or Devil is in the Details, or Gyroscope's violent beat. |

(pps, I listened to Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots Today, god I love that album) |
Yotimi
05.22.11 | @Lucidity I guess what I mean by unintrusive beats is that I never feel like they're trying to impress me with crazy beats like a lot of artists do (which is okay, just doesn't always work). I like it to be interesting enough to push the song forward, and at times there should be some focus on the drums - like in Gyroscope - but not to the point where it becomes the artist trying to be technically amazing. |
Yotimi
05.22.11 | PS my favorite beat on the album is on Turquoise Hexagon Sun where it keeps fading in and out with billiard balls hitting during the fade-outs.
And Nice Aids |
luci
05.22.11 | Yeah I agree, they keep the beats interesting enough without making them needlessly complex or flashy. It works well overall. |

05.22.11 | Good list but a top electronic list without Shpongle is fail. |
Yotimi
05.22.11 | Deadmau5's full albums never did much for me, but I like some tracks a lot (like Strobe). Primal Scream is okay and I understand their influence, but I never really could dig their sound, always came across as kinda cheesy to me.
And I just don't like Shpongle - The Spanish guitars kill it for me.
I like the XX Rabbit, just not one of my faves. I like the laid back vibe, but it doesn't really impress me a whole lot (I even wrote a song in 2002 that sounds EXACTLY like "Islands", so I resent them for that). |
