Sowing's 2022

Did my blog post last December, but forgot to make my annual list.
20Honey Harper
Honey Harper and the Infinite Sky

Every bit as smooth and gazey as their debut, just slightly less memorable.
19Silversun Pickups
Physical Thrills

A glistening, slightly creepy return-to-form that recalls Better Nature and Neck of the Woods.
18Taylor Swift
Midnights

Overlooked amid my initial disappointment with how this thing sounded was just how good the lyrics are. Also, the 3 AM tracks are essential.
17Prince Daddy and The Hyena
Prince Daddy And The Hyena

Punky, angsty, and gritty with some super infectious guitar solos to boot.
16PUP
The Unraveling of PUPTheBand

This truly sounds like an unraveling, like the band is totally out of shits to give. Isn't that kind of perfect for a pop-punk record?
15Peregrine (USA-MA)
the awful things we've done

At its best, this thing gives us a handful of SOTY contenders. A guitar-driven post-hardcore/emo album with plenty of lyrical diamonds.
14Pinegrove
11:11

Lush and beautiful in a way only Pinegrove could be. This album sounds like a walk in the park on a Spring morning.
13Animal Collective
Time Skiffs

Don't let the naysayers convince you that this isn't a top 3 AnCo record, because it is.
12Panda Bear and Sonic Boom
Reset

Sunny Beach Boys-vibes with a psychedelic twist are nothing new, but they sure are pleasant. This became my 4 year old son's favorite album, and the more I've listened to it, the more I appreciate it too.
11The Wonder Years
The Hum Goes on Forever

I never "got" TWY until this record, and I think some of that has to do with just how potent the emotion is here and how well the production allows it to shine through. A brilliant pop-punk album that is almost certain to make you feel things.
10Big Thief
Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You

The sheer scope and combination of genres on this is impressive. A must-listen for any fan of indie/folk/country.
9Ethel Cain
Preacher's Daughter

Depressing as hell, but also an incredible artistic feat. The lyrics here can be truly devastating.
8Willi Carlisle
Peculiar, Missouri

This album has only sounded better with time. It's still a tad inconsistent, but when Carlisle is at his best, he sounds like a fucking legend in the making.
7Daniel Rossen
You Belong There

Avant-folk within a labyrinth of acoustic guitar intricacy. The sound of an artist truly pushing the boundaries of their genre.
6Zach Bryan
American Heartbreak

For a while I refused to admit this is better than Elisabeth, but it is. This is Bryan's country magnum opus.
5Somewhere South of Here
Leave Me for the Crows

This just keeps climbing the charts for me. With nary an average song, the whole thing is an emotional juggernaut wrapped within some of the most infectious melodies of the whole year. A banger.
4Wild Pink
ILYSM

Wild Pink's work with Peter Silberman of the Antlers paid dividends on this hushed, inward-gazing folk spiritual revolution. A classic.
3The Callous Daoboys
Celebrity Therapist

Boisterous, obnoxious, and creatively reckless to the point of exhilaration. I don't generally go for albums this heavy, but Celebrity Therapist is a major exception and hands-down the best album I've witnessed come out of the mathcore scene since Option Paralysis in 2010.
2Domestic Terminal
All The Stories Left To Tell

One of the most gorgeous and emotionally uplifting "summer records" I've heard in a long, long time. I'll always have a personal attachment to this thing.
1Smidley
Here Comes The Devil

Eerie, breathtaking, and profound doesn't even begin to cover this severely underrated piece. It's an observation of many things, notably loneliness and despair, and it overlays that emotional hell with religious concepts to form a stunning intersection between the personal and spiritual. It's aesthetically the emo blair witch project, and emotionally the most visceral, affecting thing that Conor Murphy has ever done.
