Discoveries Of '08

2008 was a great year for me for finding music, but not so much for hearing music that came out this year. Most new releases I heard this year were from bands with earlier releases. But this was a great year for discovering new music. Ok, so I accidentally submitted early, and it won't let me continue commenting, so... Porcupine Tree, United Nations, Circle takes the Square, Damiera- Sputnikmusic. Coheed and Cambria, Interpol, Mastodon- Rock Band 2. Muse, Psyopus- Friends. Fall of Troy, Unearth were previously listened to bands with new albums. Plus, I found out about the Ghostships this year.
1Ornette Coleman
The Shape of Jazz to Come

The best jazz album I've heard yet, and was everything I wanted in a jazz album. Not nearly as grating as most free jazz I've heard, which is a plus. Thanks National Public Radio.
2Necrophagist
Onset of Putrefaction

Aw yeah, Necrophagist. Thank you random guy on Myspace and Sputnik Music.
3Necrophagist
Epitaph

I heard the bass intro of Only Ash Remains, and fell in love instantly. Thank you, Myspace and Sputnik.
4Rodrigo y Gabriela
Rodrigo y Gabriela

My friend had told me about them earlier, but I didn't care about them too much at first. I do now. Thanks buddy.
5Rodrigo y Gabriela
Re-Foc

What a weird album name. Thanks Sputnik
6Between the Buried and Me
Colors

I think I saw them on some band's, maybe Dillinger Escape Plan's, myspace, and thought White Walls was the most amazing thing ever. Thanks Myspace.
7Between the Buried and Me
Alaska

Selkies! Backwards Marathon! All Bodies! Thank you, ex-girlfriend.
8Between the Buried and Me
The Silent Circus

I have a bad habit of telling myself that I won't get earlier albums from my favorite bands, just because the sound is less polished or rougher, or whatever. Well, I wish I had heard Ad a Dglgmut sooner. Thanks Sputnik.
9Dillinger Escape Plan
Ire Works

I got this right after Colors, and it was amazing, and really opened my ears to grindcore and mathcore. I might have seen them on Fall of Troy's myspace, I forget. Thanks Myspace.
10Dillinger Escape Plan
Miss Machine

Everyone says Panasonic Youth is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Well, yeah, kinda. Thanks Sputnik.
11Dillinger Escape Plan
Calculating Infinity

I only got this because Ire Works was so cool. It's an ok album, except the gigantic gap in one of the songs, and the singer isn't as good as Greg in the new DEP. Thanks Sputnik, I guess.
12Mute Math
Mute Math

Another buddy of mine showed me these guys, and I thought they were pretty cool. Plus they had the "progressive" (really just experimental) edge I was into during the beginning of the year. Thanks buddy.
13Weezer
The Blue Album

I'm lame, and heard these guys first on Rock Band. Say it Ain't So and Buddy Holly were awesome with 4 guys banging the songs out of a 360. Thanks Rock Band.
14Protest the Hero
Fortress

I might have seen these guys on either Fall of Troy, or DEP's myspaces. They fit right in with the whole Between the Buried and Me hype I was on back in spring, and are just so cool. Thanks Myspace.
15Protest the Hero
Kezia

I prefer this album to Fortress, mostly because the songs feel mostly more memorable, and the lyrics and vocal deliveries are more solid. Thanks Sputnik.
16Tera Melos
Drugs to the Dear Youth

My classmates and best friends don't get this band. I think they're just awesome. I saw that they went on tour with Fall of Troy, and checked them out. Thanks Myspace!
17Tera Melos
Tera Melos

Good album, terrible last half/song. I've never made it through Melody 8. Thanks Sputnik/Myspace
18Tera Melos
Complex Full of Phantoms

Tera Melos slay on this. Last Smile for Jaron is one of my favorite songs ever, probably. Thanks Myspace/Sputnik.
19Boston
Boston

Boston is such an amazing band. The vocals are so uplifting and well performed, and Tom Sholtz is a guitar god in my eyes. Thanks again to Rock Band.
20Behold... the Arctopus
Skullgrid

An alright album with a few really great moments. It just gets to be too much after a while, though. Saw them on Between the Buried's friends list. Thanks Myspace!
21Hot Cross
Risk Revival

I just recently discovered how good this album is. I guess it just never compared to other, better albums by similar bands I listen to. I heard them get compared to Fall of Troy on Sputnik, and looked them up. Thanks Sputnik.
22 Grateful Dead
Skeletons from the Closet : The Best Of

Casey Jones is such a cool song. I finally get the hype around Jerry Garcia and this band now, too. Thanks Rock Band! Best band to drum to.
23 Fugazi

I want to get into this band so bad. Tera Melos, in a blog criticizing "Mathrock" just called themselves and similar bands "Bands that listen to Fugazi". So I looked them up on Myspace, and lo and behold, these guys are pretty cool. I just need a good starting place. Thanks Tera Melos!
24Horse the Band
R. Borlax

The first half is pretty good, and has a lot of great moments, but the screaming gets pretty bad after a few songs. A friend showed me "Birdo", and I looked them up some more. Thanks friend.
25Horse The Band
The Mechanical Hand

This was a much better album by these guys. Synth more crazy, vocals much better, and much more passionate. Thanks Sputnik/Myspace.
26Porcupine Tree
In Absentia
27 Coheed and Cambria
Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star blah blah blah
28 Coheed and Camrbia
Good Apollo, Volume 2
29Interpol
Turn on the Bright Lights
