06.23.08 | Man, have I got plenty of suggestions for you if you're digging this lot. Let's just begin with the first era. I've seen a pattern emerge when examining 70's Prog-Rock, and that is that there were many more excellent albums released than there were excellent bands. Prog peaked during the years of '72-'73 and something like 85% of all progressive-rock recordings were delivered during just these two specific years. That's not to say that it didn't originate back in '69 and extend all the way through the early 80's. I'm stating a statistical fact that the genre was flooded with releases during the two years in question. And not only did the lesser bands put out their one or two great contributions, but the leaders in the genre also released their best stuff during this timeframe. There were a nice crop of like two to three dozen groups who had one or two great debuts and follow-ups, but never received the financial and press support to continue on. In fact, there's several bands that had far superior debut efforts to the big bands, like Genesis, Yes and Tull, but they quickly sank into obscurity shortly after their release. I noticed that I don't see Jethro Tull on your list and recordings like 'Thick as a Brick', 'Minstrel in the Gallery' and 'Songs from the Wood' are absolutely mandatory Prog-Rock recordings.
Aside from Tull, whhere to start? Dunno. So I'll just mention a dozen of like 200 amazing Progressive Rock records from the first half of the 1970's. Any one of these recordings would be a worthy addition. All twelve of them would be sweet.
