| DaveyBoy's Big Day Out 2010
A fine & sunny Australia Day in Melbourne... What could be better than watching 10 bands over 11 hours? The day started off well since the public transport & gate entry was a breeze. Even had time to buy merchandise before anyone had started playing. Crowd was ok for the most part, and we had no problems with food, water or the toilets. The smaller than expected D barrier for the main stages did change our plans a little (skipped Ladyhawke for The Mars Volta, and had to see 2 bands from outside it), but it was a great day all up & definitely value for money. The following is a list of the bands we saw in the order they played: | 1 | Sugar Army
Always tough to kick off the day's proceedings and I thought these guys did well. Fairly similar to their album really; A couple of great songs, a couple of good ones & the rest was just ok. They sounded really good though, with the guitar-work better than I expected, and the lead singer working the crowd well. | 2 | Bluejuice
As expected, these guys are sooooo much better live than on record. From the yellow jump-suits to the inflatable lizard & lobster, this was just a super fun set. They're definitely not the tightest or most talented group going around, but the highlight tracks (especially the closing Vitriol.) went off. And man, was I surprised about the large & extremely enthusiastic audience they were playing to. | 3 | Karnivool
Mixing/sound problems ruined their opener Simple Boy, but it thankfully got better from there. A really mixed bag of a set, with three tracks in the middle - Set Fire To The Hive, All I Know & New Day - being absolutely amazing... The latter was actually one of the individual song highlights of the day. But the remainder was only just ok. Can't really put my finger on why since Ian Kenny's vocals sounded great & I was really impressed with one of the guitarists. | 4 | Kasabian
Couldn't get back into the D barrier after a quick bite to eat as an amazingly large crowd waited for the Brits to get on stage. A sensational set & I can now see why these guys are touted as a great live band. They perfectly spread out the songs they played over their 3 albums and my only concern was playing The Doberman over a 50 minute set. Empire, Club Foot, Where Did All The Love Go & Fire were sensational & the crowd sing-along factor was higher than anybody could have imagined... So much so, that lead singer Meighan seemed far too appreciative to do his usual messiah act. Equal 3rd best act of the day. | 5 | Passion Pit
(Heard 1 song from Eskimo Joe on the way to Passion Pit) I didn't really know what to expect from these guys live due to their lack of experience & the outdoor setting. But it was pretty darn good since the synths & keys worked really well to get the crowd dancing, while the lead singer's falsetto was sufficiently controlled apart from 1 or 2 little hiccups. Sleepyhead satisfied most, while the sing-along during Little Secrets was awesome. Things should only get better when they have more tracks to work with. | 6 | Hilltop Hoods
This may sound silly, but these guys were the surprise of the day for me. Not only did they bring a fun, crowd-involving atmosphere to proceedings, but they also sounded just as clear as on record, which is not always the case with rappers. Furthermore, they showed off their rapping talent, especially MC Pressure who occasionally sped up his delivery to add some variety. They played all the crowd favorites to a huge audience and it just seemed right for the occasion. I know the music isn't live, but the DJ's couldn't be faltered either. 2nd best act of the day. | 7 | Rise Against
(On the way to Rise Against, it was hilarious to see the crowd react to Dizzee Rascal's opener as I think they thought his new album was his debut). It's always a pleasure to see Tim & the boys belt out some songs & this was no exception. Full throttle energy & passion from start to finish, with Tim actually sounding better here than he did earlier in the year. The usual scream-along highlights were all there - The Good Left Undone, Ready To Fall, Swing Life Away and the absolutely phenomenal Prayer of the Refugee - while it was also great to finally hear Savior played live. Tim forgetting the words to the 2nd verse of Hero of War was more funny than disappointing, while the crowd was as hot & sweaty as expected. Equal 3rd best act of the day. | 8 | The Mars Volta
Wanted to see Ladyhawke, but thought we wouldn't get into the D for Muse if we didn't act this quickly. Heard 3 or 4 songs at the end of Lily Allen's set as we waited to get in and she sounded quite good. It's probably a bit unfair to comment since I don't know their music well, but The Mars Volta only sporadically kept me interested. Long songs & lack of catchiness isn't exactly my thing, while it took at least 40 minutes for the ever-dancing Cedric to acknowledge the crowd. Were they mugs of tea that a roadie kept bringing out to him? On the plus side, the music was pretty groovy, while the drummer was an absolute beast of a player. | 9 | Powderfinger
I can see why people feel they're boring live, but I thought they played some real solid stuff. There was probably one too many tracks from their new album that went down like a lead balloon, but that's to be expected. The old favorites were all adored by the crowd and were an easy sing-along, while a quick rendition of Mumford and Sons' Little Lion Man was pretty cool. | 10 | Muse
Clearly the highlight of the day and not just because they had the best light show & an extra 20 minutes of playing time on everyone else. Muse were right at the top of their game here and almost as good as when I saw them in early '07. The new songs sounded better than I expected, while their set was pretty spot on apart from excluding Stockholm Syndrome. It was great to get right up near the front and the crowd surge just before they came on almost swept me off my feet. Better was the sight of practically everyone in the D bouncing along to the chorus of Time Is Running Out, which was the highlight of the set. That song, along with Starlight & Uprising were the sing-along stand-outs, prior to the sensational encore which included Jet's Nic Cester coming out to sing Back In Black, before Muse finished it off in grand style with Plug In Baby & crowd favorite Knights of Cydonia. This is going to be a tough one to knock off for DaveyBoy's gig of the year. | |

01.28.10 | So yeah, a great day overall. Acts that I wouldn't have minded seeing, but missed due to clashes were more of Lily Allen, Ladyhawke, Phrase, Kisschasy, The Temper Trap & Girl Talk. | Jim
01.28.10 | looks like you had a good day, man. sucks for missing phrase and the temper trap. apparently the latter went off. | iisblackstar
01.28.10 | Got the chance to see both passion pit and girl talk an they were both great. Agree completely about kasabian. I thought mars Volta were awesome and the drummer made my day. | ThePalaceOfWisdom
01.28.10 | The top of Muse's game is also known as the bottom of the barrell. Sounds like you had fun. But I'd have only seen three of these bands. | tombits
01.28.10 | The trains on the way up for me were absolutely insane, just so many rowdy kids that were already getting on the piss. Missed a couple of trains because of the crowds I missed Sugar Army, who I was planning on seeing first. Went and checked out the crowd for Bluejuice, and only listened to one or two songs from the back because it was so fucking huge. Same thing for Dizzee, although I managed to get right into D for Girl Talk, which was pretty epic. I gave Hilltop a miss because they would attract a really shitty crowd, but I'm glad to hear that's not the case. Didn't you bother catching Groove Armada as the last act of the day? They were pretty fun. | DaveyBoy
01.28.10 | Yeah, I did Jim. From wha I saw of The Temper Trap from the Sydney show, Dougy still has some work to do on controlling that falsetto.
The timetable must have treated you well (unless you saw half sets) iisblackstar. And at least I have one person on my side re: Kasabian. | DaveyBoy
01.28.10 | You must be a hard man to please WisdomPalace. Many see Muse as the best live act in the world (not just me).
Tom, compared to my experience heading to SoundWave last year (when Lamb of God fans were shaking the train as it was moving) this was a breeze. We were at Flinders Street before 10am though. I must admit that heading home after the BDO was NOT though. It took 45 minutes just to get up on the platform. By the time we got anywhere near The Boiler Room for Groove Armada, there was no chance to get inside. It took too long to get out of the D barrier for Muse. | Deviant.
01.28.10 | Groove Armada put on a damn good set, half and half between them and Muse for me. Apparently this is where the aussies are hanging out so i'll say this here: You guys are awesome and Australia as a whole is a great place but I hate you so much right now for giving the world AC/DC. The bogans have overrun Wellington, and it's all your fault | ThePalaceOfWisdom
01.28.10 | Davey, you know as well as I do that just because a lot of people will say something is good doesn't make it so. e.g. I had some girl tell me Gerard Way had a larger vocal range than Mike Patton. | iisblackstar
01.28.10 | Yeah passion pit first half then girl talk but he ran over his time so got lucky | DaveyBoy
01.28.10 | LOL Deviant. I remember being in London when AC/DC were there & it was indeed quite a sight to behold. They're gonna be here in a fortnight & I work close to where they're playing, so it's gonna be interesting.
BTW, both you & iisblackstar seem to have done the half set theory. That's something I find difficult to do, but I guess if you're not strong on seeing anyone in a certain time-slot, then it could work.
And yes John Morrison, I do agree about the mass populous not always being correct. Just sticking up for Muse I guess... It seems like they're falling to the tall poppy syndrome of late.
As for Way against patton; Hmmm, the jury is stil out for mine & all will be settled come Soundwave. LOL. | Douchebag
01.28.10 | Fantastic day, glad somebody else agrees with me with Karnivol, couldn't quite put my finger on it.
Kasabian, Muse and Rise Against were hands down the best. But Grinspoon were easily the most suprising, crowd was really friendly and fun. | Kiran
01.28.10 | i can imagine the chorus to little secrets being craaaazy | DaveyBoy
01.28.10 | Sounds like your 1st BDO experience went well Croc. Good to hear. One tip (especially at festivals) is never to judge a band on their 1st song, as the mixing can sometimes be off. I did think that got better with Karnivool.
Man, you must have been miles away for Muse if you saw Grinspoon.
Yeah Kiran, it was. Super fun to sing & dance along to... And Passion Pit pulled it off pretty well too. | Kiran
01.28.10 | if i remember correctly, they're coming to london in may but i'll have to skip it since i'm already saving up my meagre student funds to make the trip down twice for pavement and the national
a shame! | DaveyBoy
01.28.10 | A shame, but you've got your priorities in order as I'm certain Passion Pit will tour a 2nd album bigger & better than ever some time in the next couple of years. | Gyromania
01.28.10 | You... are so god damn lucky to have seen Muse, Rise Against, and Hilltop Hoods at the same show; I wish I could have seen them! | DaveyBoy
01.28.10 | Yeah, it was pretty cool gyro. The festivals down here are getting really competitive and even this one that was criticized for being "sub-par" when compared to previous years is still very much worth the price of admission. | Deviant.
01.28.10 | Davey: every second person in town is decked out in the black AC/DC shirt, it's offending my senses. They all creep in from the countryside like little leprachauns and infest our pubs.
I've seen Muse a couple of times before so I wasn't too worried about skipping half the set. They put on a phenomonal live set, but I haven't seen Groove Armada in years, and you know me and House music | Tulannical
01.28.10 | That's a bummer that you missed Ladyhawke. Seems like it was a great day, though! | DaveyBoy
01.28.10 | LOL Deviant. I wonder if AC/DC have ever tried to release a non-black t-shirt. Probably did & it sold a big fat zero. I bet you're seeing some interesting mullets also!
Oh yes, I almost forgot about your love of "shakin that a$$". At least you're wise enough to know Muse "put on a phenomenal live set".
A bit of a bummer Tulannical, but she's from around these parts & only has released one album... So there will be plenty of time to see her in the near-future. | Douchebag
01.29.10 | "Man, you must have been miles away for Muse if you saw Grinspoon."
haha yup ages away. Could still see some of the stage and the screens really easy though and I figured I would see them when they return at the end of the year. | DaveyBoy
01.29.10 | Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see where they play at the end of the year. They sold out one Rod Laver gig way too quickly last time (& it was the worst performance of the 3 times I have seen them). I'm presuming they'll just do 2 gigs there, but I'm not ruling out a crack at Etihad Stadium or the Music Bowl. | AmericnZero02
01.29.10 | I seem to remember "Prayer of the Refugee" slaying live when I saw them a couple years ago. They're probably a better live act now with Zach instead of Chris. | DaveyBoy
01.29.10 | The thing is Zero, I probably see 'Prayer of the Refugee' as my 5th favorite RA song. But it is unquestionably their best live song. It just grows another leg, so to speak.
I never saw RA with Chris as guitarist, but Zach is as energetic as they come. He's all over the place & Joe sort of has to follow suit just to get himself near a mic to sing backing vocals. | CrackTheSkye
01.29.10 | At the Gold Coast gig, Ready To Fall was their best song. Maybe is was because they closed with, but it was easily their best. | CrackTheSkye
01.29.10 | It* | DaveyBoy
01.29.10 | Ready To Fall is up there CTS & is one of the album songs I personally prefer over Prayer of the Refugee. I'd say it was because it was the closer that made it stand out to you. In their longer sets, they do in fact close with Prayer. | CrackTheSkye
01.29.10 | Yeah, when I Prayer come on halfway through their set I was like “wtf?”. | DaveyBoy
01.29.10 | No time to WTF at an RA gig... Just go crazy. Only time on Tuesday I thought I'd lose my voice was during RA. I dunno how Tim does it. | CrackTheSkye
01.29.10 | I was physically spent after RA. 46 degree weather, and being sick for week leading into it was not a good mix. | Transient
01.29.10 | can't believe you didn't see girl talk
i'm considering skipping TMV to see calvin harris instead because all of my friends will be | Kiran
01.29.10 | calvin harris put on one of the less fun DJ sets i've ever been to but it'll probably be more fun than going to TMV alone! | Transient
01.29.10 | haha most definitely, i'm pretty sure calvin won't even compare to girl talk so i'm not going in expecting it to be mind blowing or anything, just want something to dance to | DaveyBoy
01.29.10 | Ouch; 46 degrees! Gee, you would have sweated out that sickness CTSkye.
I know Transient. It was really such a silly clash between Girl Talk & Passion Pit by the organisers. I ended up just choosing between which I felt had the better recent album. 'Manners' just.
Can't help you on your TNV/Calvin clash, as I really didn't want to see either. Sounds like Kirgasm agrees.
I do like 'Flashback' though. | Transient
01.29.10 | i'll be seeing:
lisa mitchell
mastodon
filler, probably kasabian or something
girl talk
the decemberists
bit of dizzee
rise against
devendra banhart / calvin harris
simian mobile disco
probably muse
groove armada | tombits
01.29.10 | I went to the volta by myself for the first half, it was still awesome. | DaveyBoy
01.29.10 | Well, going by your list & my list Transient, we don't have all that much in common. Well, at least you won't be at the main stages much & won't have to put up with the annoying D barrier. |
