The Greatest Openers Ever
Not much to explain, here are my favorite album openers of all time in order.(in my humble opinion) |
1 | | AFI Sing The Sorrow
Miseria Cantare- The Beginning-
An absolute masterpiece. This is the most frightening and chilling song I've ever heard, this is the definition of a good way to start an album. |
2 | | Radiohead Hail To The Thief
2+2=5-
This contains some of the best lyrics ever, And the guitar plug-in at the beginning sends the chills, and throughout the whole song until the abrupt ending do I feel intrigued. |
3 | | Thrice The Alchemy Index: Vols. I and II...
Firebreather-
The sirens at the beginning sets the tone for this angry and wonderful song. The melodic chanting that fades out affirms this as one of the great beginnings ever. |
4 | | Sonic Youth Daydream Nation
Teenage Riot-
A very emotionally connecting song, and is likely my favorite Sonic Youth song. |
5 | | Radiohead Amnesiac
Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box-
The percussion start is great, with the infectious beat that comes in over it starts in the wonder of the song. |
6 | | Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
Shine On You Crazy Diamond(Part One)-
One of the most adorned songs of all time, I have to agree. From the guitar beginning to the saxophone ending, this song has classic written all over it. |
7 | | Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Mellen Collie And The Infinite Sadness-
This simply wonderful piano piece is a grand starter for Mellen Collie. |
8 | | The Acorn Glory Hope Mountain
Hold Your Breath-
This is an epic opening track from some of indie's finest. |
9 | | Radiohead In Rainbows
15 Step-
This desolate track is masked behind its up-beat electronica pattern and Thom's cool delivery. |
10 | | AFI Decemberunderground
Prelude 12/21-
A very effective gang chant makes this interesting AFI song even better. |
11 | | Interpol Our Love To Admire
Pioneer To The Falls-
A sad and lonely song that is the only highlight off of the disappointing Our Love To Admire. |
12 | | The Mars Volta Frances The Mute
Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus-
13 minutes of pwn, not much else to say. |
13 | | Muse Black Holes And Revelations
Take A Bow-
Politically charged and grand its scope. The song has a great feel of corruption and insight, which is what the lyrics capture as well. |
14 | | Nine Inch Nails Year Zero
Hyperpower!-
Hyperpower! is a brooding, violent instrumental that opens the album fantastically. It really represents the unsettling confusion and tension that's part of Year Zero. |
15 | | Foo Fighters In Your Honor
Still-
Despite my feelings on Foo Fighters being mediocre, the second disc of In Your Honor is quite remarkable, and this interesting and emotionally connecting song is excellent. |
16 | | Explosions In The Sky The Earth Is Not A Cold Dead Place
First Breath After Coma-
Quite an opening to an album, this epic and slow building song really lets you know what you're in for. |
17 | | Gorillaz Gorillaz
Re-Hash-
Such a soothing and happy song. The very relaxed vocal delivery makes me smile every time. |
18 | | King Crimson In The Court Of The Crimson King
21st Century Schizoid Man-
Schizoid Man is a very abstract jazz song and is quite inventive for 1969. |
19 | | Queens Of The Stone Age Era Vulgaris
Turnin' On The Screw-
An un-conventional dance song but probably one of the best I've heard, the distorted guitar mixed with the rough sounding beat is quite pwn. |
20 | | Mute Math Mute Math
Collapse-
Short but sweet, the song is very powerful, the charging snare drum pattern along with Paul Meany's croons starts the album very well. |
21 | | Nine Inch Nails The Fragile
Somewhat Damaged-
A creepy but great acoustic guitar starts in until the pure anger of the song takes over. |
22 | | Radiohead Kid A
Everything In It's Right Place-
The main thing that excels about the song is Thom's wonderfully layered vocals, it really captured the mood that the song is after. |
23 | | Muse Origin Of Symmetry
New Born-
A desolate sounding beginning to Muse's masterpiece. |
24 | | Pink Floyd Animals
Pigs On The Wing(Part One)-
This is a sweetly sung ballad by the masters, nothing much to it but is quite excellent. |
25 | | Mastodon Leviathan
Blood And Thunder-
If I were to ever show someone a metal song, it would be this one. It is tightly wrapped and well compact. |
26 | | Jane's Addiction Ritual De Lo Habitual
Stop-
A Jane's Addiction track by the books, rocking and fun. |
27 | | Gorillaz Demon Days
Intro-
A tongue-in-cheek gloomy track that doesn't last long, but sets the album up very well. |
28 | | Metallica Ride The Lightning
Fight Fire With Fire-
A rather carefree, melodic guitar part starts the song, which is quite rare for Metallica, then starts in the loudness and what we've come to expect from the band. |
29 | | Billy Talent Billy Talent II
Devil In A Midnight Mass-
One of the darkest and most violent songs ever in pop-rock, Devil In A Midnight Mass is a great song with a sinister guitar riff and some chilling vocal delivery. |
30 | | The Mars Volta The Bedlam In Goliath
Aberinkula-
This is a great sample of The Mars Volta: a loud, crazy almost bi-polar way of progressive. |
31 | | Faith No More The Real Thing
From Out Of Nowhere-
The title holds true to the song itself, it feels like a spontaneous combustion of rock. |
32 | | Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine
Head Like A Hole-
The classic Nine Inch Nails song that I couldn't not include, giving the world the classic line: "Bow down before the one you serve, you're going to get what you deserve." |
33 | | Massive Attack Mezzanine
Angel-
A mind-numbing bass riff fading in opens up this unsettling and heavy opener. |
34 | | Incubus Light Grenades
Quicksand-
Although this isn't a good sample of the general sound of Light Grenades, it's still as interesting as hell. |
35 | | Sonic Youth Goo
Dirty Boots-
A transforming song, going from the easy sleezy guitar riff to the angry chants at the end. |
36 | | Cream Disraeli Gears
Strange Brew-
A very soothing, mellow yet not mellow track. The falsetto vocals are quite catchy. |
37 | | Jane's Addiction Nothings Shocking
Up The Beach-
The bass riff sets the tone for the song, and the album for that matter. |
38 | | Coldplay Viva La Vida
Life In Technicolor-
One of the only electronica infused songs by Coldplay, A rather epic tune to start off with. |
39 | | The Beatles Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band-
A rocking track for the Beatles. It's the iconic opener to the classic album. |
40 | | Attack In Black Marriage
Come What May-
A refreshing starter to a refreshing album |
