Top 15 Video Games 2014

I play a lot of video games every year, for every system, and these are the best games I played in 2014. There are still some key titles I have not yet played (Shantae, Dark Souls II), but I will not get to them until next year, anyway.
15Sunset Overdrive

Hilarious tongue-in-cheek humor. Very meta. The mission system is pretty dated and it doesn't feel like a true open world title, as the world isn't very populated at all. Unique gameplay that focuses on using style points to kill groups of enemies instead of just progressing normally. Very colorful world and fun physics.
14Yoshi's New Island

Not the strongest Yoshi's Island title, but a very good platformer nonetheless. Just like other Yoshi games, it's about as difficult as you want it to be. It is hair-pullingly difficult to get all the collectibles in a stage, but easy to progress through them. I always felt a sense of shame if I didn't get very many. I think a lot of the negative criticism this game received was completely unwarranted. Beautiful art style and cute songs as usual.
13Volgarr the Viking

Brutally difficult. I love incredibly difficult games like this, where your every attempt is better than the last. You need to memorize every stage and every enemy pattern to defeat this one. Very old school Castlevania.
12Kirby Triple Deluxe

Easy, simple, wonderful Kirby adventure. Doesn't re-invent the wheel, but is an excellent culmination of the action-oriented Kirby games such as Kirby 64.
11Outlast

If this game was any longer it probably wouldn't be on here. Not very frightening, but definitely one of the most atmospheric games I've played recently. Ended on a pretty weak note. Tried too hard to be Valve-y. But I really enjoyed roaming the asylum. The DLC was incredibly fast-paced and very "run like Hell."
10Guacamelee Super Turbo Championship Edition

A pretty by-the-numbers Metroidvania with somewhat simple combat. A great adventure with clever nods to gaming's past. Addicting.
9Hyrule Warriors

Dream crossover for me. I absolutely love Koei's Warriors franchise, especially the most recent iterations, and The Legend of Zelda is another of my favorite franchises. Hyrule Warriors has some of the most stylish combat in the series. The scenarios take a bit more strategy than these games usually do.
8Bayonetta 2

Non-stop action and incredibly intuitive and addicting combat. So much charm and personality in the over-the-top storytelling. I don't quite love it as much as the critics, but it is still amazing.
7Super Smash Bros 4

I have both versions of this game. The Wii U version is definitely better suited for crowd and party play with its ultra-frenetic 8-Player Smash and larger stages, whereas the 3DS version seems more suited to competitive smashers. Collecting trophies has never been more addicting. Mega Man inclusion made me very happy. I would take the game a lot more seriously if my hands weren't too large to play for more than thirty minutes at a time on my 3DS.
6Titanfall

A competitive shooter equal parts new and old. It has already influenced the landscape of shooters with its parkour system. I didn't take it too seriously, but I had a really good time playing it. This also has special significance for me because me and my now-boyfriend became very close playing this online.
5Mario Kart 8

One of the strongest Mario Kart titles. Absolutely stunning art design and alluring colors. Strongest course design since Double Dash. The DLC is also special.
4Azure Striker: Gunvolt

Newest game from the Mega Man Zero / ZX development team. Definitely delivers with amazing boss battles, and frenetic score attack-friendly gameplay. Very exciting 2D action game with beautiful sprite work.
3Shovel Knight

An ode to the 8-bit platformer action games that I love so much. Mega Man and Castlevania are two of my favorite game series of all-time, and this takes the best aspects of those franchises and turns them into something completely unique. It's a definitive trip to the past, but I haven't played it before.
2Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

A no-brainer for me. I'm a Donkey Kong Country superfan. Excellent level design and very good difficulty scale. A little bit on the easy side if you aren't going for all collectibles, but it can be very difficult in places. David Wise returns to the series to bring us a simply magical (and very long) soundtrack.
1Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

Bite-sized Super Mario 64. Wonderfully charming and attractive. Simple and relaxing, without being a detractor.
