combustion07 01.10.21	I've recently got away from some bullshit but pretty much everyone I've been around throughout my life is currently involved in said bullshit. I've got people I've been trying to keep a distance from hitting me up talking about suicidal things in the middle of the night. People I grew up with but in order to fix that they've got to want to help themselves. Do I continue to try with this even though it's had a history of bringing me back to old ways? I've always been a very loyal person and also a person who has a problem saying no to people I care about. I'm just worried I'm going to see more people I see as close get buried too young.

Sinternet 01.10.21	everyone experiences it differently so i'm not sure there's a great answer to this. personally i have a tendency to go on long dissociative streaks where anything i do seems to be on autopilot rather than having marked intention behind it. i usually am able to pull myself out of it by having in-person contact with friends and am lucky i've still got that support bubble around me at this time when a lot of people haven't. but yeah loyalty and caring about your friends is great but make sure you're not becoming a crutch for them to the point you neglect your own health, i'm sure they don't want to be a burden on you either. perhaps letting them know you've been struggling as well would help, and if they can't accept that then i'm not sure helping them is worth the toll it takes on you
eureka 01.10.21	therapy helps. take walks outside if you can. stay off social media as much as possible. try to keep yourself actively occupied and engaged in something productive (self-fulfilling - it can be as simple as engaging with new music or reading a book). do little things each day and then feel good that you were able to do those things. build off that small momentum the next day. be kind to yourself, always.

How you go about managing it differs person to person and the type and severity of their depression but if its bad enough that you can't successfully manage it by changing habits and behaviours etc then a combo of meds (finding the right ones for you can be a process unfortunately, and this can be hard if you don't have a good family doctor) and therapy/counseling at first, followed by lifestyle adjustments, education, and practicing coping mechanisms etc so you can hopefully ween off the meds and function without them. That's the short of it.

I just resign myself that it will come and go, and I will get through. combustion07 01.10.21	Appreciate all of the good advice sputters. I was lifting weights everyday a year or so ago and that definitely helped a lot. I need to get back into that and bring meditation back into the fold more regularly. I was going to therapy years ago as well after having a weak moment and being appointed one. I put my mouth on my exhaust pipe while one of my "friends" hit the pedal as I inhaled. Wild times lol. The therapist had these paddles you held in both hands that vibrated and were supposed to activate your brain in some way to retrieve buried memories and recover from past traumas. The sessions were a little strange but it seemed to help some. Didn't care for the meds I got though then the therapist retired and I haven't been since. Appreciate the confirmation that I should focus on myself though. As Radio mentioned normally what makes me feel good is helping others but I'm in a weird position now where the people I associated with only want help for all of the wrong things. The friend who's been hitting me up suicidal got clean with me when I did originally before slipping up. He was doing good with me then his girl (whom he has 2 kids with) split up with him and kicked him out of his house. Then he had to move in with his mom who's been a tweeker since he was in the womb. He sat in that house watching his mom get sexed up by a kid we graduated with daily just because he had a bag of meth to share and quickly started using himself again. I just feel bad leaving him behind or whatever because I get why that would be rough. His ex still phones him trying to have flings with him even though she's engaged to another guy at this point and is essentially using being able to see his children as a tool to fuck with his mind. He started shooting H now and I think that these things are what lead him there. His mom did the same thing with his dad when he was growing up and I feel like it's hitting him extra hard seeing history repeat itself with his situation.

We're living through unprecedented events in history, and its all very overwhelming. Block all of it out, watch a show that makes you laugh. Comedy is the best remedy for depression. As well as exercise, meditation, and listening to music of course! I was in it deep a few years ago. Still kinda am. The anxiety and OCD problems on top of it all... Ugh. I know it sucks man. But try to focus on the present and future because that's all you can do. Fuck the past.
claygurnz 01.10.21	1. Lift heavy ass weights (or start working out if you don't normally - realise this is hard in most places atm because of covid. 2. Go for jogs - nothing crazy to start with, I enjoy running for a couple of miles or so. It'll help clear your head and make you feel good. 3. Are you religious? If so, make a commitment to involve yourself more. Pray/meditate etc. I've recently starting attending Church more often. 4. Stop whacking off/watching porn all the damn time. I've spoke about this on here in other lists. It might be placebo but you'll feel better and have more energy. Porn isolates you and makes your relationships suffer. 5. Take a break from social media / manage how long you go on it for. I'll never quit it entirely because I do want to see what my friends are up to, but avoid spending too long on things like Instagram, because you will end up comparing yourself to others, and that'll never get you far. Plus, it's very easy to start staring at pictures of sexy ladies, which will probably lead to number 4 on my list. 6. Read more. Make sure you mix it up, I read a biography last week and am now reading a crime/fiction novel. 7. Reach out to your friends/family. Let them know what you're going through. We're in 2021 - there should be no stigma about mental health. Hope these help you dude - stay strong!

Everybody has their own way of trying to cope with things and honestly I think anyone that has these kinds of issues is just trying to figure it out and what seems to help seems to help. On the note of the emdr I could definitely see it being a problem for many but for me it was useful in some ways although rough. Never realized exactly ate up my upbringing was until having those sessions and acknowledging those things help me change an outlook I had on life and myself that I never realized was so warped because it had just been the reality I made in my head at a very young age. claygurnz 01.10.21	Yeah I remember that I convinced myself for the longest that I actually had depression, then I realised I needed to reassess - clinical depression is something I would never wish on anyone. There's a difference between being worried a lot, comparing yourself to others etc, and not being able to get out of bed in the morning, or hold down a job.
nol 01.10.21	The best therapy is communicative. Obviously meds can help, but you have to be so careful. Everyone's brain responds to meds differently, and it can even get better or worse on the same meds depending on how much/how long you are taking them. But it feels like the only way... I've been slowly upping the Prozac for a couple months, and its tough man. I don't wanna lose grip but I NEED to lose grip at the same time. It's a mental battle.
Lord(e)Po)))ts 01.10.21	Yep, finding the right meds is daunting but thats more of a failure of the medical community than the drugs themselves. You are supposed to try multiple to find what works for you and have a doctor that explains that this is a process and helps guide you through it and teaches you about how they work. I went through 3 meds before finding one that worked for me, and the second meds made me go hypomanic and nearly cost me my life. If I had had a good family doctor at the time it might have been a much easier process.

combustion07 01.10.21	Cheers Darius. And yeah really my entire family and friend group pretty much entirely consists of addicts save for my parents who somehow broke that chain. My mom pretty much had cancer nonstop when I was growing up and my dad was a very abusive, angry man. I don't really have anyone to communicate with in life after leaving my friend group and although I have a good relationship with my mom talking to her is kind of like talking to a wall unfortunately so I gave up on that years ago. Might try to get ahold of a therapist again. Meds scare me but maybe I just got the wrong one. Took my mind to a very dark place and honestly made me lose complete control of all of my thoughts.

They are a great tool when you find the right ones for you and the science behind them is miraculous and fascinating. You just can't use them as a crutch, that's not what they are for, they are a bandaid. I've been off of them for a year now and cannot stress how helpful they were in getting me to where I am now

Which might have made it worse but I wasn't really at a point where I cared considering I got prescribed them after sucking an exhaust pipe lol. These doctors do not give a flying fuck about you.

madrigal30 01.10.21	trundle i get that you've had your experience and i'm sorry that it wasn't what it should have been, but dude that's straight up the worst and most harmful advice you could give someone. first of all, if you're communicative with medical professionals in your life, they can + will take you on and off meds to find the right one for you. if they don't, they're a bad doctor and it may be worth it to seek help elsewhere. second, psychedelics are NOT a cure-all for depression. they've been shown to help some people, but by no means is it a universal positive experience, and it can actually lead to severe dissociative episodes, worsened depression, "acid flashbacks" and PTSD, and even schizophrenia in those prone it. there's simply no way to tell what psychedelics can or will do to an individual. nobody can stop combustion if their plan is indeed to engage in the use of psychedelics. if that's what you want, dawg, then there is advice to be had about set, setting, and responsible use that you should follow. BUT we should not be encouraging as a community the use of psychedelics to cope with depression, as that simply is not how that works. here for you combustion. drink water, get exercise, try to socialize in groups of non-toxic people, and perhaps find a hobby to get really into that you can do with someone else. all those things can help.

I'll tell you right now that doctor is an idiot. it's true that anti-depressants take quite a while to start fully working, but the "adjusting" to them thing is bullshit. If you are having any adverse or unmanageable reactions to them within the first couple weeks you should be advised to try something new immediately and I'll explain why... Anti-Depressants are highly regarded in the medical community as they have a virtually unfounded success rate that you won't find in pretty much any other medication. And a significant portion of their failure rate is due to practitioner incompetence rather than the drugs not actually working. Unfortunately, with drugs for the mind rather than for physical wellness, it's a lot harder to assess people and make proper educated decisions about what medication is the best for you, especially in a climate where many people don't have family doctors so they are being wantonly prescribed drugs without the doctor having any knowledge of your situation or history etc which is crucial when it comes to mental health issues. Anti-depressants can basically only be prescribed on a combination of best judgement and trail and error. There is no way for a doctor to know which one you are going to be compatible with unless you just try things and tell them which ones aren't working for you. The big problem here is that doctors are overworked and don't give time to their patients, and with anti-depressants education is crucial to success. These doctors will put you on a random anti-depressant without any background history or professional psych eval etc as a shot in the dark and then just tell you to wait for months until they start working. What they are SUPPOSED to explain to you is that since this is trial and error, you will have to communicate with them so you can find the right drug. So a lot of people end up trying one anti-depressant which fucks them up and makes them feel shitty and think thats it and they will all suck and not work. Thats a massive failure on the behalf of the medical community.

My first prescription made me drowsy as fuck to the point it was dangerous to be at work and also gave me insomnia. My second prescription made me violently shit my fucking pants and made me go hypomanic. I was on both of these much longer than I should have been because I didn't have a good family doctor advising me appropriately at the time. My third prescription had no unmanageable side effects and if I had a good doctor I would have found it much sooner. So these drugs would have an even higher success rate if western doctors were competent but we still have a long way to go when it comes to treating mental health patients. But the really cool thing about ssri's etc is that people with a predisposition towards depressive or anxiety disorders have a tendency to have a smaller hippocampus than other people, which is a big emotional regulator in the brain. As you build up a circulation of these drugs in your blood stream and they start working, they actually gradually expand your hippocampus. so not only do they alleviate your condition so that you can make the changes in your life you need to function better without meds (lifestyle changes, therapy, coping mechanisms etc), but they actually also straight up make your hippcampus more swol which has long lasting implications on your ability to function off of meds when you do stop using them. a lot of doctors won't even explain that these meds are supposed to be used as a temporary tool while you put the work in either though. and if you aren't taught about that well they might as well just hand you a bunch of Ativan at that point.

Start with a therapist, see if they help, and if it's more serious than that, they'll recommend a psychiatrist. If you can't afford a therapist... exercise and healthy eating are good for your brain. Don't go with drugs unless a psychiatrist says so, even if it's not physically addictive, you can become dependant on it. Don't self medicate.

The family doctor I have did some very inappropriate things to me when I was 10 or 11 and my mom had me keep going to him because he had helped her with her cancer. He is still my primary care doctor to this day although I have always hated him and honestly before being forced to go to the doctor to get prescribed something I had been avoiding seeing a doctor like the plague. On the advice of the psychedelics I've had both good and bad experiences with them. Shrooms helped me quite a bit years ago. 2 years ago however I took a pretty big dose of acid on accident thinking what I had gotten was fake and had a terrible time that caused me some issues for quite awhile. My best friend who sold the hits to me got murdered literally within 24 hours of my bad trip as well which didn't help the situation. I've had a few flashbacks since then and they can be pretty scary. I will say I haven't been offended by anything in this thread. I'm nearly impossible to offend so nobody worry about me in that sense.

Which only intensified when I heard my friend had been murdered the next day. I won't get into the details of the trip but acid can become an extremely scary thing. When it gets hairy is if you let your mind wander and if that happens specifically with acid at a certain dose you can latch onto some delusion you have and then you're just in for the ride if that happens

StormChaser 11.29.22	Sorry to hear you not doing good man. We all have hard times and bad mental health days / periods I guess. Never suffered from depression (at least not clinical), but I did have other mental challenges and I suppose it's a great thing to have someone in your life to share the stuff you're dealing with. Someone who can actually listen and make you feel better about it in some capacity. The real change probably has to come from within, but (positive) people can help you get to the place you wanna be. I guess the fact that probably EVERYBODY past the age of like 24 is dealing with something mental-health related can be somewhat of a consolation. Keep on keeping on and try surrounding yourself with positive people, I hope that helps.

This was a pretty damn rough patch of my life when I'd posted this. The friend I mention in the initial comments ended up killing himself about 6 months later after moving to Philly to participate in rehab. He got clean and then ended up downing a ton of sleeping pills and drinking himself to death the night before he was supposed to hop on a plane and have me pick him up from the airport. RIP to my man Jacob! Although he was a troubled man there's a huge chunk of my life that I considered him my best friend and I miss the dude everyday! Life is actually pretty decent lately though and I'm digging it. Took a lot of the advice given in this thread around this time also and would like to thank all of the sputfolk once again for always being cool bro's m///

I lost several people due to drugs and alcohol during the pandemic. rip to Marty strangely enough taking a break from the world and being alone helped a lot of my personal ills. I didn't really communicate with the world for most of 2021 and just spent time in isolation finding myself. im sorry to all who suffer everyday.

I was in a fairly dreadful relationship at the time so it was pretty eh for me but had I been single I think I would have enjoyed it honestly because I'm very much so a lone kind of creature and bouts of isolation can do absolute wonders for me tbh. Sometimes I secretly hope for another brief lockdown lol
