11.21.20 | All of my 5's each have above a 4 average on Sputnik. Most of my 4.5s do too; there aren't too many that have below a 4.
Which of your 5's and 4.5's have the lowest average rating? Why is it much better for you than most people? |

11.21.20 | Grails - Chalice Hymnal (My rating: 4.5; Sputnik rating 3.7)
I'm aware this is actually somewhat well-received (even if criminally underrated) here, but on RYM this has an average of 3.25. Like, wtf is that? This is easily Grails' best work and their shift into a more cinematic sound was more-or-less a definitive statement for their value in the post-rock scene at the time. |

Yes! Glad someone does. I adore this album, and I listened to it while making the list, hahaha
"Transcendence was my first Devy album and it sold me pretty good"
Oh damn, nice! I just feel that 'Transcendence' actually feels more like his 'Ocean Machine'-era of music, which is a sound I doubt he'll revisit...it's loud and boisterous like DTP should be, but it also keeps its dense mood for most of the album, which is strange for a Devy record nowadays, lol. |

11.21.20 | "I'm mostly surprised at the insinuation that there's a lot of people who hear Dredg before they hear of the concept of sleep paralysis?"
I was a freshman in high school when 'El Cielo' was released, and a freshman in college when I first heard it. I didn't know anyone with sleep paralysis before hearing the album, and the internet was still mostly on dial up and/or cable, so it wasn't the ubiquitous ocean of immediately accessible knowledge that it is today. |

11.21.20 | None of those honestly are low averages. 3.6 isn't that low an average, 3.7 is pretty good and the rest are high averages for this site.
I remember when Mirages by Tim Hecker had a supremely low average rating (like 3.4 at one point) which I had at a 4.5 rating. Supremely underrated album at the time. I'm glad the average on that album has gone up since :). |

11.21.20 | I meann, you're right, but I see a lot of albums with a 3.6 to like a 3.3 that aren't the most positively discussed, I think sometimes people that are negative towards an album are more vocal than those who are positive. So, yes, the majority do like it, but sometimes it doesnt come off that way in some threads |

11.21.20 | Yeah...I don't have much of a difference between my actual ratings and the Sputnik averages. At least not the ones I rated that high. But I wanted to ask the question, so I just put the ones that I rated 4.5 or higher that had lower than a 4 average (because 3.6 is the furthest degree of separation for me, and that's only one album).
Other people may have larger gaps, and that's what I wanted to see. |

only counting 3.5 and below, these are all 4.5's by me:

aetherian - the untamed wilderness (3.5 average)
astronoid - s/t (3.5 average)
god is an astronaut - epitaph (3.5 average)
maestus - deliquesce (3.5 average)
there are a few that are around 3.7 to 3.8 but to be fair, i don't find that to be an unreasonable average. the ratings above i'd find too low for such superb records.
may be some i missed, i didn't check every record cus i'd be here for a long time haha |

11.21.20 | "I see a lot of albums with a 3.6 to like a 3.3 that aren't the most positively discussed"
I do agree with you there to a certain extent, but sometimes it just depends on who feels like commenting on the thread when it pops up. I also have some highly rated stuff that I have probs never commented on a review for either, so that could be another factor in there for other users, too |
Sinternet
11.21.20 | also depends on the genre, given how somehow every somewhat serviceable metal album gets at least a 3.9 on the site, I guess a 3.6 might look comparatively low. us cool electronic users are pretty used to it though |

11.21.20 | just depends on the thread but i mean if you look at the ratings then every album in that range has the majority of people liking it lol |

11.21.20 | i also must note that i can't complain much because i'm infamous for slapping low ratings on things that are unanimously liked so hey ho |

11.21.20 | "Yeah I would say to 3.8 it's fairly unanimously liked, 3.7 is where it gets a little shaky, then 3.6 and downward is where it becomes fairly disliked with the minority liking it"
I don't think it's quite there. I always though that the border that most people have between "liking" something and "not liking" it is between 3.5 and 3.0 (despite what they're labeled as). Because we like to grade based on school grades, a 3.5 would correlate to a 70, which is the baseline pass in America, and 3.0 would be a 60, which is sometimes barely passing and other times a fail (depending on the subject).
As such, if something has a 3.6, that means that most people still think it's passable. I always made it out to be that anything 3.4 or below was generally not unanimously praised, like it got mixed/middling reviews. Anything whose average is below 3.0 is considered just bad.
Y'all see it that way? |

Code Orange - Forever (4.5) (3.3 sput avg)
Code Orange - Underneath (5) (3.2 sput avg)
Code Orange are one the most inventive and fun metal bands in recent memory and the reason these albums have a low average is because this site is full of humorless neckbeard black metal fans who are revulsed at anything that makes them look even the slightest bit goofy. |
Avagantamos
11.21.20 | it makes sense in term of enjoyment
4.0 = B (above average enjoyment)
3.5 = C (average enoyment)
3.0 = D (below average enjoyment)
2.5 = F (album failed to provide enjoyment) |
Tundra
11.21.20 | Yeah that's a better way to put it, 3.5 is kind of a popularizing grey area and then 3.0 or below is generally disliked |
Ecnalzen
11.21.20 | Usually if I slap a 3 on something, its a band I really liked that made a disappointing album that is still worth listening to, or something I listened to in passing and didn't really care to come back to, but I didn't feel like I wasted time listening to it
But yeah, when I see stuff below a 3.5 avg, I used to assume it wasn't the most well received unless I have already heard it, then I am a little saddened because the avg is 'low.' Now, I don't care as much and I feel like the site has somewhat shifted away from that mentality over the years
You can see people in the comments with 3 ratings just trashing the album they are discussing, tho, which is kind of amusing. Rating systems are weird, ha |
Avagantamos
11.21.20 | those people who rated something a 3 and then trash it probably went in with a lot higher expectations |

11.21.20 | I tend to follow sputs opinion quite closely aside from a few offhand bands so tbh my only drastic ones are Paramore-Riot! (5 for me, 3.5 for sput) and Bring Me the Horizon-There Is a Hell (4.5 for me, 3.3 for Sput). I have such a soft spot for late 2000's emo nostalgia (Scripted by Icon For Hire definitely borders on 4.5 for me as well) |
DavidYowi
11.21.20 | I tend to rate things pretty highly. Anything that I enjoyed thoroughly is a 4, if I enjoyed it but had some reservations it's a 3.5. For me 3 is where the line between liking and not liking it blurs, and anything under that is where I officially dislike an album. I know I'm in the minority in how I rate things |
Avagantamos
11.21.20 | that's pretty similar to my system, although 2.5s can sometimes have some redeeming qualities. |

11.21.20 | Pyrrhon - Abscess Time (5) (3.6 sput avg)
3.6 isn't a terrible score it's just that it should be at least a 3.9. This is my AOTY, I liked it so much it I wrote a review of it. Easily the most underrated release of the year |
Ecnalzen
11.21.20 | A 2.5 for me is either everything is just kinda there and mostly listenable but nothing stands out/no repeatability
or
it has a handful (usually 2 to 4) of really good songs and everything else mostly sucks
When I hit 2 and below, there isn't much worth hearing for me at all on it. Maybe one song has some lasting value |

11.21.20 | I guess I just had a different perspective; I've always thought 3 is decent for an average. I don't really consider it to be a red flag until an album is averaging around 2.8 or less. If I'm going off of what this site says, giving something a 3 still means that it's good. |
