| Favorite Progressive Rock Bands
Lately I've been on a progressive kick, and I've been thinking about my favorites and how I would rate them

HEAVY. At times listening to Hawkwind feels like being sucked into a Black Hole while tripping on acid and hearing a lot of wah-wah guitar. It doesn't get much better (or warped) then this. Prospective astronauts: who needs NASA when you have this? My opinions on Hawkwind won't change anyone's minds: fans will know what I'm talking about, others will think I'm talking blasphemy. Let me just state one more thing to convince you of Hawkwind's greatness: Lemmy Kilmister. | | 1 |

They can be overrated at times (Dark Side of the Moon anyone?), but goddamn if this isn't one of the greatest bands of all time. I don't think I can dislike any one of their releases from their inception till "The Wall", there is always at least one great thing about each release. The worse they could ever be was boring, The Division Bell puts me to sleep. | | 2 |

1969-1976 of cource. Probably the most epic of progressive rock bands, almost every song by them over 5 minutes seems to end with a grand overture, which by this point your totally indulged in the music, and you can't help but feel this is the greatest shit ever, if your a progressive rock fan. Peter Gabriel is one crazy dude, and backing him was a band of equally amazingly talented musicians. There's only one problem with their legacy: fucking phil collins. | | 3 |

It might not always be in a good way, or in a way you THINK is good, but it will nonetheless. This one of those bands that if you want to get into, or just understand, your going to have to go through their releases chronologically, because this a band that evolves and changes like no other. | | 4 |

At times nothing more than pop with synthasizers, and at times mind blowing virtuosos blasting out some of the greatest progressive rock you'll ever here. Everyone should have "Brain Salad Surgery". Keith Emerson playing his Moog synthesizer is one of the greatest music tones of all time. | | 5 |

I really love Can, but they are considered more "krautrock" than anything. I don't care, Tago Mago is progressive enough for me. Most of their material needs to be listened on headphones to be fully appreciated, the subtle changes in the songs work so well compared to the bombast of many other progressive groups. | | 7 |

Who else can write songs about Killer Whales and Giant Squids and be this good? And one of the only progressive rock bands to feature saxophone as a main instrument. Seriously, "H to He" is a genre classic that everyone should listen to. | | 8 |

One of the most least known progressive rock bands are Axis, an obscure group from Greece. I've only heard their 1973 self titled, but it's good enough for me to list this band as one of my favorites. The first song starts off very heavy and hawkwind-ish, and is the only to feature vocals. After that the album seems to go through a multitude of different sounds: free-jazz to symphonic ELP-ness, to Canterbury style passages in the style of bands such as Egg. This is one of the most unique and original progressive rock albums, it is a shame it is not widely known. | | 9 |

What can I say? I love the soundtrack to those late 70's zombie films, and Goblin has composed many of them, including the most famous of all time, "Dawn of the Dead". Also, there is a new band called Zombi that plays in the same style as Goblin did in the 70's, so everyone should definitley check that out. | | 10 |

05.18.07 | Guys, I HAVE listened to Rush, Dream Theater, and Porcupine Tree. Rush are ok but they can be really annoying at times and I listened to them too much back in the 9th grade anyway. As for the other two, I really don't care for them at all, I think they are quite overrated. For me, great new progressive rock bands are Orne, Saturnia, and Zombi. | GrandpaSeth3000
