The rest are pretty stupid too. But to be fair, music critics can be huge buttholes who really miss the mark. I love Mingus' liner notes from the Black Saint and the Sinner Lady album where he addresses that. |

It's probably impossible to stay completely objective when writing a review. None of us is able to measure an objective quality of music. And yes, sometimes we just can't "get" something what isn't necessarily bad. |

06.28.11 | Well, I think within a genre, it's at least a point worth bringing up; i.e., why do you rate this a 4.0 when you gave this similar band a 2.5. If you can't defend it (and you probably can), then it just seems you're inconsistent as a reviewer.
So someone could (theoretically) say that your review is bad on the grounds of being arbitrary. But I don't think any of the trolls would even think that much into it, so the point is kind of moot. |

I never said that. What I said was that you should have some sort of support for why. Not in the review, mind you, but if someone asks you to clarify then do so.
Example: You give Fall Out Boy's latest album a 4.5, and you give All Time Low's latest album a 1.5. I'm not saying a troll who says "You gave FOB's latest album a 4.5; you don't know what you're talking about. This review sucks" is justified; rather, I'm saying that if said troll asked instead, "You gave FOB's latest album a 4.5 but this a 1.5? I think they're pretty similar; can you explain why," then you should have some sort of justification as to why. (i.e., All Time Low's latest album lacks the catchiness factor, or the lyrics are terrible, or the singer is off-key).
And if you can't explain outside from "I just like FOB more; it sounds better" with no real basis for your claim, then the original criticism "Well you like this band but don't like that band; you just arbitrarily like bands so your review sucks" becomes valid.
But of course, you're never gonna see a troll do that. |
