Marko Muzika
I haven't made a list in awhile, and I thought...Hey, Marko! Why not make a list of a whole lots of stuff that you like to listen too. Who would enjoy this stuff? I said to myself, sputnik. And this is how I got here. To this list. Note: No particular order. |
1 | | Bitch Magnet Umber
I recently got into these guys. In terms of the genre they are mostly delving into (Post-Hardcore), they were ahead of the curve. Their sound is very raw and carries lots of distortion, just the way I like it. |
2 | | Autechre Amber
"Teartear" as the closer still remains my favorite Autechre song. |
3 | | Vanilla Thought Process
A mixture of hip-hop instrumentals and downtempo beats that anyone is in a chill mood will enjoy. |
4 | | Xploding Plastix Treated Timber Resists Rot
If you haven't heard Amateur Girlfriends Go Proskirt Agents then I don't fucking know you. That was their debut, this is their third album. The mixture of acid-jazz moments on their second album that were fleeting are enhanced and you get a far more schizo moments, allowing the often simple melodies to explode into something more. |
5 | | Saltillo Monocyte
Most were tired of Ganglion, I don't blame those who thought it was a one-trick pony. It became stale by mid-outing, but Monocyte is an entirely different practice. A mixture of classical elements, drum and bass, and trip-hop. |
6 | | Crippled Black Phoenix (Mankind) The Crafty Ape
The oldest story in the book: political corruption - caught on tape..or music...or whatever. A far cry from their early work, a progressive rock push for the band that once many believed would stick with their post-rock tag. |
7 | | Swans Greed
Do yourself a favor and listen to one of the underappreciated artists of their time. They've re-formed so no fucking excuses. Post-rock with industrial edge. |
8 | | Gramatik Street Bangerz Vol. 2
Hip-hop instrumental artist with a flair for classical arrangements, its quite good. When Gramatik is on point that is. |
9 | | My Disco Little Joy
Jared Dillon did a review on here and it does it justice. A post-punk aesthetic with a minimalist agenda. Highly repetitive bass lines, but once you get past it and become patient the album opens up to new levels. Was on of my fav in 2010. |
10 | | Tycho Dive
This came out last December...don't quote me on that, but if you're into some melancholic ambient this is your thing. Tycho still knows how to flow through an album easily. |
11 | | Zomby Dedication
I'm not that quaint on dubstep, if I can even call it that? Ask Deviant he'll know...or just read his review. I loved this. Its minimalist style totally pulls me in, entrancing to the last track. |
12 | | Dead Man's Bones Dead Man's Bones
Ryan Gosling and a friend made a band. This is that band. Its not bad, in fact, it's charming and indie-licious. That isn't a word. |
13 | | Nicolas Jaar Space Is Only Noise
Minimalist tones with House beats. It's a trip and much like most minimal work, if you're not into the genre you may be swayed against it. |
14 | | Teebs Ardour
Some experimental electronic with a downtempo feel. It's all so loose and unnerving. |
15 | | If These Trees Could Talk Above The Earth, Below The Sky
A post-rock group that are releasing an album by ends month. This was released in '09 and it shows ITTCT are maturing, hopefully their next won't disappoint. |
16 | | Light Bearer Lapsus
POST-METAL, POST-ROCK. POST-. |
17 | | Coil Horse Rotorvator
If you're remotely interested in industrial, then Coil is for you. When they first started in '83 their sound was purely experimental and they remain an influence on the genre today. |
18 | | dredg Leitmotif
One of the few albums by dredg I adore. |
19 | | Russian Circles Empros
The best post-rock release last year, "Attackla" still in play. |
20 | | This Will Destroy You Young Mountain
An impressive debut EP that stands as their best work in their active career (this came out in 2005). |
21 | | Fugazi Instrument Soundtrack
An oddity in their discography (mixture of demos, and outtakes), but "I'm So Tired" is so fucking good, yet painfully short it warrants repeats. |
22 | | The Zounds Curse of the Zounds!
For a group that were hugely influential in the genre of punk and post-punk in general you'd think that more people would be acquinted with them. Mysteriously they remain absent in most people's minds in both conversations, yet the one album they released is - front to back - a pure masterpiece. From the origin of their band's name to the pensive lyrical content it all adds up to something that deserved more. |
23 | | Mission of Burma Vs.
This post-punk group that released Vs. in '82 are band that have re-formed to release two more, although lesser in quality, great releases. They'll be releasing a new album soon after signing with Matador Records. Vs. remains to be one of my favorite post-punk records. It's all about the message people. |
24 | | Pinkshinyultrablast Happy Songs For Happy Zombies
A shoegaze group, like most, that clouds their musicianship with deep layers of noise rock. They have a dreamy indie atmosphere though, all due to the their vocalist. |
25 | | The Orb Orblivion
"Do you ever get the feeling that you're being followed?" |
26 | | sleepmakeswaves ...and so we destroyed everything
Their EP was completely and utterly tedious in my opinion, but the after listening to In Today Already Walks Tomorrow and then this...you'll understand why my expectations and impression of this post-rock group totally changed. |
27 | | Shabazz Palaces Black Up
Don't think I need to say much about Shabazz Palaces. A unique and completely experimental hip-hop group from the mecca of grunge - Seattle. |
28 | | New Order Power, Corruption and Lies
New wave electronic at its best. |
29 | | Small Brown Bike Fell & Found
This Michigan post-hardcore band that recently re-united and released the posted album bring down their stereotypical genre vocals to a lighter tone and seem to find new ground. |
30 | | The Field From Here We Go Sublime
Where minimal techno completely enthralls you to the point that you question your sanity. Why is it that this fucking loop is still interesting to me? |
31 | | Battles Gloss Drop
It's warm, fuzzy, and a romp! |
32 | | PJ Harvey Rid of Me
What can I say. I prefer the edgy, raw Harvey than the restrained angry Harvey. |
33 | | Local H As Good As Dead
When 90s alternative ruled Local H released this number. It still resonates with teenage angst, while simple it still packs a punch. |
34 | | Orphans of Cush White Noize
British motherfucking hip-hop that sounds like it belongs along 90s Wu-Tang. |
35 | | Roots Manuva Brand New Second Hand
Don't quote me, but Smith may be one of the first British hip-hop artists to truly resonate with his people, he's still at it and his last one 4everevolution was a damn fine effort to the quality I expect of him. |
36 | | Scale The Summit The Collective
I can't believe how young and extremely talented these guys are. It was only a few years before this release that they were trying to find their sound on Monument, now they have defined it with The Collective and Carving Desert Canyons. |
37 | | Grails Deep Politics
Think post-rock mixed with a western stylized soundtrack. |
38 | | Refused The Shape of Punk To Come
The album title is true to its wording. Refused along with the one album they've produced thus far (they've just re-formed) is still completely fresh and hugely influential. |
39 | | Gang Starr Moment of Truth
RIP |
40 | | Zola Jesus Valusia EP
Just piano masked in eerie lo-fi atmospheres. It may sound boring, but it isn't. |
41 | | Wild Nothing Gemini
Yeti music, I applaud this recommendation. |
42 | | Venetian Snares Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett
A mindfuck of hard drum and bass with classical arrangements. Oh and spooky Russian female samples, scary stuff and interesting. |
43 | | Tortoise TNT
If you're looking time for pause Tortoise offers it. A highly-experimental band in their prime, this along with Millions Now Will Never Die, are experimental minimalist post-rock outings. Too bad they haven't done anything noteworthy since this album..possibly Standards in '01. |
44 | | Toe For Long Tomorrow
Fantastic musicianship on For Long Tomorrow realizes the potential of this Japanese outfit that finally claw an all-around quality work. |
45 | | Therapy? Troublegum
There are a lot of Therapy? releases that I could submit on this list, but in terms of pure anger, doubt, frustration and just hopelessness Troublegum warrants as their best. In those terms that is... I know depressing. |
46 | | Streetlight Manifesto Everything Goes Numb
Their most complete work is amazingly their debut and this skaband can do no wrong after another 2 releases in '06 with Keasbey Nights and Somewhere In Between in '07. |
47 | | The Stooges Fun House
Excluding their first and last works The Stooges' raw untempered sound that lashed out at genre definitions at its time has been hugely influential to punk. Fun House remains my favorite Stooges album. I mean fuck look at the cover. |
48 | | Slowdive Just For A Day
Slowdive's Souvlaki remains as their best record, but Just For A Day deserves just as much recognition. The opener "Spanish Air" collects all the dream pop and shoegaze atmosphere you'll ever need. |
49 | | Alice In Chains Alice In Chains
Most would point to Dirt or even the pair of EPs that AIC had produced in the early 90s as their best work, but their final 'true' release with their 'original lineup' that made them famous is their most mature, nerving, and grating release. With the band falling apart, the cover of a three-legged dog is a remainder of how difficult it was even to release such a record. |
50 | | Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral
This is a given. Regardless if you're even interested in Industrial or have heard Reznor's other work The Downward Spiral is one of the defining works of the any 90s music scene, in any genre. |
