| Don Broco: Fishtown Pt. 2, Baby!
Galloping up to see the ol' Broco boys in Philly this weekend. Beyond pumped, have seen them open a couple of times, but not headline yet, so this should be most excellent. Not holding my breath for a Killian kameo, but I mean, Dance Gavin Dance technically doesn't have any shows slated until October, so...just sayin'. For all my Broco zealotry of late (inspired, naturally, by their expert music video game), I've truly spent most of my time with Technology. In prep for the show, have spun this one a couple times in order to flesh out my xp. Chicanery
Speaking of brevity, to echo a Soundoff, it's pretty surprising this band doesn't have a bigger following around these parts, especially given the site's affinity for Touche Amore. If you dig abrasive-yet-melodic hardcore and have the 12 minutes to spare, these seven tracks are well worth your time. | | 5 |  | The Contortionist
Our Bones
I legitimately admire this band's ability to evolve its sound pretty regularly, and this outing reminds me of APC and, perhaps strangely, a bit of latter-day Katatonia. I spose I understand some of the hate from the purists--and will be the first to admit that the Smashing Pumpkins cover is both a bizarre note to end on and played entirely too straight (plus, Darlingside already did it much better and with more novelty)--but the original stuff is solid if not earth-shattering. | | 6 |  | American Football

I keep coming back to this album, which I find wonderful drift-off-to-sleep music in the most positive sense that can be taken (think Hammock, or the dearly departed Johann Johannsson). Speaking of 'mesmerizing,' this is almost that word. Pretty sick segue, right? This is actually my first exposure to the artist, but hot damn: "Cairn to God" crushes, and "Cairn to Suicide" is deceptively gorgeous. | | 8 |  | Kayo Dot

The Things We Can't Stop
Perfect stylistic companion right here. But in seriousness, I'm as shocked as anyone that I didn't simply scoff out laughter at new Cold music in 2019, especially with their latest being the bland-beyond-belief Superfiction. Even that was almost a decade(!) ago, but here we are, and two of the three singles, at least, are actually decent. Flabbergasting. Maybe it's the embittered Killer and the Star refugee in me, but I still bristle chiefly at the pitch-correction Scooter seems to unnecessarily(?) use, but still...color me waaaaay more intrigued than I have any right to be. (There's also an off-chance I'll see them play in town next week, but it's the night after Kayo Dot, so that'll definitely be a gameday decision.) | | 10 |  | Tiny Moving Parts

Despite it taking me entirely too long to grasp and internalize the pun of the title, this release sounds extremely promising. I've honestly only really followed Brandi Carlile and Amanda Shires (I do recognize Natalie Hemby's name, though that's honestly about it, while I've, um, seen Maren Morris), but those two alone are more than enough to bring me aboard. | | 13 |  | Vivian Girls
