Running my First 10k This Weekend

Pretty excited. It's across the Bay Bridge in Maryland, and while I'm not thrilled with the prospect of a nearly 2 mile-long hill to kick things off, still hoping to have a good time. List is recent digs.
1Julien Baker
Sprained Ankle

Just saw her live with Kevin Devine earlier this week. Fantastic show. It was almost spooky quiet while she was performing--more so than the headliner, even--which is a testament to how hypnotic her set was.
2Pinegrove
Cardinal

Played the same show. Also really, really solid. They were touring as a six-piece, and switched up some of the arrangements of their songs--not significantly, but enough so that it was pretty neat getting to hear the variations and not as though you were just playing the album.
3Kevin Devine
Bubblegum

Haven't listened to Instigator yet, but have been spinning this one pretty regularly in preparation for the show. "Redbird" is my jam.
4Apologies, I Have None
Pharmacie

Still need to listen to this a few more times, but a very solid slice of melodic post-whatever going on here. Definitely some Manchester Orchestra vibes.
5Jimmy Eat World
Integrity Blues

Another one I've got to spend some more time with, but have been very pleasantly surprised by so far. It's not as though I'd written off latter-day Jimmy Eat World, since I dug Invented quite a bit--mainly on the merits of its title track, admittedly--but Damage really did nothing for me, to the point that I can't hum a single melody off that record. Thankfully, so far this feels like a substantial--if perhaps a bit overlong--course correction.
6Dance Gavin Dance
Instant Gratification

Mothership made me hungry for more syrupy earworms dressed up vaguely as post-hardcore (and I mean that in the most loving way one can). Those "Uh-oh"s in the background during "On the Run," tho...
7Johann Johannsson
Orphée

I've listened to this album while falling asleep pretty regularly for the past couple of weeks, so this is a highly qualified dig, in that I absolutely love the first half, and still have no idea what the second sounds like. Which, in its own way, can definitely still be a feature rather than a bug. Nonetheless, looking forward to giving it a whirl when I'm not already about to drift off.
