Late To The Game

List's first half are bands I've heard about/been intrigued by for a long rwhile, but only just recently started taking the time to listen to. Glad I did. rSecond half is just plain ol' recent digs.
1Low
Secret Name

Well, I've finally come around on Low. Incidentally, this doesn't seem to be one of
the more popular albums in their lengthy, storied discography--but it's the first full-
length from them I've managed to check out, and it's pretty fantastic. If this is a
"lesser" album, at least popularly, then I can't wait for "I Could Live in Hope" and
"Things We Lost in the Fire."
2Bonobo
The North Borders

I'd honestly never heard of this feller until this year, but it was a pretty quick and
easy conversion. Look forward to plumbing the back-catalog.
3Dirty Three
Ocean Songs

I think, like with Low, my biggest reason for holding off on these folks as long as I
have was that they've got such an extensive discography, which I almost always
find oddly intimidating (mainly since I know, if I end up liking them, I'll also end up
wanting to track down everything). Still, glad I've started.
4By the End of Tonight
A Tribute to Tigers

Fun stuff. I'm sure math + post-rock isn't exactly a rare combo, but these cats
wear it well, and I've always had a soft spot for Temporary Residence records.
5His Name is Alive
Mouth by Mouth

More of a grower than the others, so far, but definitely still possessing a strange
sort of off-kilter charm.
6San Fermin
San Fermin

Such a bizarre, beautiful album. I get the comparisons to the National and Sufjan
Stevens, definitely--but one the main bands that also kept coming to mind for me
during this is Murder by Death. Only, you know, doing an Andrew Lloyd Webber
musical.
7Sainthood Reps
Headswell

Really, really good. I liked "Monoculture" quite a bit, but even after hearing this
just a handful of times, I easily prefer it by a pretty wide margin.
8Pity Sex
Feast of Love

Good ol' fuzzed out ear candy, in the best possible way. Seems like a lot of people
are disappointed by this in the wake of Dark World, but I think it's an excellent
follow-up, and concise enough that it stays fresh every time I play it. (Also, it
reminds me of the garage-ier parts of Open Hand's "You and Me," which is always a
good thing.)
9Native
Orthodox

It's always reassuring when a band can feel both viscerally raw and technically
polished without being disjointed. That holds true not just for this album as a
whole, but for virtually every individual song included therein.
10Blood Orange
Cupid Deluxe

To borrow loosely from another artist, pop this one on and lose yourself to dance.
