Gameofmetal
04.24.15 | Sweet. Suspected Sabbat would win.
I was grasping for a band to name drop when I summarized Utstott, but totally blanked at the time. It's come back to me now. I would say Windir is a bit closer in sound than the bands I mentioned. Just thought I'd add that. |
SCREAM!
04.24.15 | They seem to be a lot less keyboard driven than the bands you mentioned. Granted I'm only on the second song |
Gameofmetal
04.24.15 | Yeah they are, but they do cite Summoning and Windir as influences I think. |
SCREAM!
04.24.15 | I can definitely see that. Just with your description + that album cover I expected this to sound like Summoning 2.0 and I'm glad to see they do at least change things up a little |
emester
04.24.15 | Not a fan of Finntroll at all but 1 is at least all right so far.
Remember checking 2 a month or so back and not being to big a fan of it. Figures since I was one of those people who didnt dig Caladan Brood that much |
SCREAM!
04.24.15 | JUst noticed how ridiculously similar the artwork for 2 is to Caladan Brood's album. Like, no way is that a coincidence |
Gameofmetal
04.24.15 | Yeah, it is pretty similar haha. |
SCREAM!
04.24.15 | So after a cursory listen of each I'm leaning towards 2 but it's too early to really say |
L4titudes
04.24.15 | I was actually first to rate that Utstott album on the site. Don't remember much other than enjoying it. Will listen again later tonight. |
Cosmoblue
04.24.15 | Nice, I've heard both of these before. I'm pretty certain I know which one I'm going to vote for, but I'm going to give them both another go to make sure. |
Gameofmetal
04.24.15 | I'm leaning towards Utstott at the moment. The way Troll uses their synths isn't exactly my favorite, thought it's still pretty cool. |
Cosmoblue
04.24.15 | I agree, the Troll album was good, but Utstott's style is more my speed. I don't think Utstott does it nearly as well as bands like Caladan Brood, Summoning, or even Ered Wethrin, but I did enjoy it a bit more than the Troll album. It has a kind of more organic feel to me, for lack of a better term. Going to wait a bit before casting a vote, though I'm still sure I know which way I'm leaning. |
SCREAM!
04.24.15 | Pretty much sums up my first impressions as well but we'll see how I feel after another listen |
SCREAM!
04.24.15 | Bump for bm |
emester
04.24.15 | To be quite honest both albums were kinda eh for me. Think I prefer Troll but I have to listen a few more times |
Hawks
04.24.15 | Sweet will listen either tonight or sometime tomorrow. |
hal1ax
04.25.15 | leaning towards 2 at the moment. Will give each another listen or two though. And i definitely hear the Windir influence in 2, this shit is awesome. |
MoosechriS
04.25.15 | Just got in from work, so gonna jam both of these tomorrow once ive had some sleep. Descriptions for both have piqued my interest though |
bach
04.25.15 | black metal lists |
SCREAM!
04.25.15 | Are the best lists. agreed |
hal1ax
04.25.15 | fuck, this is a close one. Put my vote down for 1 (Troll). I dug them both, but 2 was a bit monotonous at times and the record as a whole just felt a little too long. Plus the Troll record is just a super fun and entertaining listen. |
L4titudes
04.25.15 | ^Pretty much read a different version what I was going to say |
MoosechriS
04.25.15 | Just jammed utstott and it was alright, some of the sections seemed overly dragged out at times and the atmospherics didn't always keep my attention. Felt like i drifted in and out of listening a few times too, nothing bad on the album really, just felt like it meandered a bit too much at times without doing much. Gonna jam troll at some point today once i get the chance. |
linguist2011
04.25.15 | I still maintain the Troll album is a really fun and enjoyable work to listen to. Very heavy on the keyboards like OvDeath said, but still enjoyable. Will listen to Utstott when I get a chance (sometime today most likely) |
Cosmoblue
04.25.15 | I'm going to go ahead and vote for Utstott for the reason I mentioned previously. |
MoosechriS
04.25.15 | Just finished with troll, a bit cheesy in places but at times had me thinking of emperor (never a bad thing). Overall a really enjoyable album, so with that in mind i am casting my vote for troll |
SCREAM!
04.25.15 | @yourgod so you're voting for Troll as well I guess?
Still unsure of my vote on second listen. I liked Troll a little more than I did the first time around but their use of synth still irks me at times. I actually wish there were more silly "finttroll-y" parts because if you're going to use cheesy keys I prefer you go all out cheese rather than sound like you're trying to take yourself seriously |
linguist2011
04.25.15 | I'm voting for 2. Whilst Troll is a very enjoyable album at heart, the atmospheric and adventurous nature of Utstott's musicianship suits my tastes in black metal a lot more. 70 minutes may seem a bit overlong, but I feel like with this album there's a lot more to explore. |
SCREAM!
04.25.15 | The 70 minutes is my main gripe with 2 but I'm still going to vote for that one. I prefer that brand of epic BM to the Finntroll worshipping Emperor (or vice versa) found on 1.
If I'm completely honest, I'm not sure I would have voted for either had they faced any of the other albums |
Gameofmetal
04.25.15 | Utstott did go a bit long, but I just dug it way more. Their ep is pretty cool too. Short and sweet, a lot riffier too. Some of you guys might dig it more. |
hal1ax
04.25.15 | Ya the synths on the troll record are pretty cheesy. I think I'm just a sucker for symphonic bm though. My ItNE vinyl is about to disintegrate I've played it so much. |
oltnabrick
04.25.15 | I vote for 1 |
L4titudes
04.26.15 | yeah I vote 1 @SCREAM! |
ChoccyPhilly
04.26.15 | According to the metal archives for Troll
Lyrical themes: Trolls, Anti-Christianity, Satanism
That's quite the jump from trolls to satanism |
ChoccyPhilly
04.26.15 | lol wtf those keyboards are like final fantasy |
SCREAM!
04.26.15 | They have an album called neo satanic supremacy which just seems ridiculously out of place in the discography of a folk bm band named troll haha |
YakNips
04.26.15 | honestly scream I agree with you neither of these are blowing me away but im leaning towards utstott |
evilford
04.26.15 | death metal > |
ChoccyPhilly
04.26.15 | you're not welcome here |
YakNips
04.26.15 | aka fuck off |
evilford
04.26.15 | so angry |
porcupinetheater
04.26.15 | Both are pretty gimmicky, but Utstott's definitely more my kind of gimmick. Nothing new under the sun but it captures the atmosphere that it's going for pretty well, and I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. Troll just comes off as goofy to me. Gotta go with #2 |
YakNips
04.26.15 | yea that utstott album had some eh moments but also some rlly great moments and overall i definitely enjoyed it
that troll album just fails to engage me so yea put me down for utstott |
BandNewbac
04.26.15 | Agree with Utstott too, the Troll album just didn't interest me |
SCREAM!
04.26.15 | What I love about these contests is seeing the album rating before/after. Troll just took a pretty big fall there whereas Utstott has stayed pretty much the same |
MoosechriS
04.26.15 | i'm actually enjoying the constructive nature of each peoples arguments for and against each album. It's refreshing than just someone typing "(band x) blows!" it's also a nice insight into the preferences of other peoples taste and what they get out of different records |
emester
04.26.15 | Both albums were alright I guess. Wasnt really too big a fan of either of them. But Troll was just way to cheesy for my personal liking. Didnt think it would end up like this since I wasnt too big on Utsott when I heard it about a month ago for the first time, but I'm going with 2. |
SCREAM!
04.26.15 | Still waiting on SpiritCrusher, Hyperion and Valkyrion to make an appearance here. |
Gameofmetal
04.26.15 | Gonna go ahead and confirm that Utstott is my vote. Troll still isn't doing a whole lot for me. Solid shit regardless tho |
hal1ax
04.26.15 | These tournament things are pretty awesome. Nothing makes me happier than discovering new, good music. |
linguist2011
04.26.15 | I second that hal1ax, this is simply a great idea. Plus I have quite a soft spot for black metal so it's inevitable I'd take part in something like this. |
SpiritCrusher2
04.27.15 | not a fan of either of them, but I liked Troll better, so I vote for their album |
SCREAM!
04.27.15 | Looking like a win for utstott although there's still a few missing votes that could potentially change that |
ChoccyPhilly
04.27.15 | Gonna go for 2. Neither are anything special and are pretty gimmicky and don't make me want to revisit but 2 has a bit more to offer I'd say |
