LilLioness 08.09.13	I love VII for a few reasons: it portrays poverty better than any of the other games, Barret is one of my favorite characters in the series and his fight with Dyne one of my favorite boss battles, it got away from Crystals being a major theme, I like the Sephiroth has a strong motivation and I am sure a lot of the rest is nostalgia.

Pennywise_M 08.09.13	Yeah VII had some awesome stuff going on. Barret is one of my fav characters in the series too, and Sephiroth was badass. And the story was pretty damn good! Heard that X's plot was gold too. I don't believe VI is overrated. It stands as a masterpiece in it's own right, as far as i'm concerned!

Cygnatti 08.09.13	I really like 6, but it was definitely the closest of the first 6 games to be like the rest of the installments on the series. not saying that's an inherently bad thing because that game was amazing, I just happen to prefer some of the others before it.
LilLioness 08.09.13	I love that V had a cross dressing pirate. However, they ruined it by just turning her into a run of the mill princess. V definitely had some strong points, even though the music gets old faster than any of the other games (I hate that boss battle theme).

Geadom 08.09.13	5 (haaaaaaaaaaaard as fuck but rewarding), 6, 4 (the DS version is also really great), 8 (you can mod your stats, lets broke this shit! ... nah, Ruby Dragon and the Weapons say naww nigga), 7 ( overall the most memorable) ,9, 10 (great battle system, but tedious post game and linear as fuck), and Tactics (i´ve lost like 1 whole year of my life just playing that game.. no joke) are the best Final Fantasy games. Also i suggest you guys to play Valkyrie Profile (the first one, on Ps1 or PSP), best RPG ever.

Given I have played both the whole way through and I willing to bet you haven't. :-P See unlike most of you, I first played 5 and 6 as an adult so I can say without any doubt, they both have just as many faults as the most recent games.

Cygnatti 08.09.13	lillioness, the issue here is what people prefer. when I play an rpg, I don't want to go look at fictional beautiful people, tons of cut scenes, useless/unlikeable characters, or overblown stories. I'm honestly gonna say this but fuck stories in (some) rpgs too, I play rpgs for the gameplay: killing shit with swords and spells. Taking full advantage of changing classes and mixing up weapons every now and then. Not saying that having a good story is a bad thing at all. It's just something on the side. Unfortunately, my willing suspension of disbelief is extremely fragile, and I'll roll my eyes to cheesy or badly written scenes easily. The first 6 final fantasy didn't necessarily have good stories (well, I'd like to think IV and VI did), but as you said, V didn't. The fact that the tomboyish pirate would later become a stereotypical princess did bother me, but the story in that game was so not stress or self-important that it never really bothered me - same goes with the others and most dragon quest games.

LilLioness 08.09.13	I guess what sets me apart is that I don't mind the gameplay in any of the games (except 2. I absolutely hate the way the designed the leveling up in that game. If I can't grind when I get stuck then I honestly can't progress). What bothers me is that it is a consistent thing where people will bash the hell out of the latter games when really their bad experience comes down to a preference for the play styles of the earlier games as you described. I wish people wouldn't act like their disinterest in the game translated into the game being bad being some kind of truthism. I will admit that 13 reaches points where the gameplay isn't the most stimulating, but at the same time 13 and 12 are the only games so far where none of the female characters battlewise feel useless. In the earlier games there is almost always a female character stuck with healing duty which to me always felt like wasted space. Like why can't she be a white/black mage? You know so she can attack when healing isn't necessary. Even in 7, Aerith feels wasted. Not just because you know she is going to die, but because she isn't really capable of being offensive. I guess I really enjoy that the recent games don't have support only characters and that plays a part in framing my opinion of them.

Like in XII, when I defeated Vayne, I thought the story was really going to pick up with some unexpected plot-twist but then suddenly the end credits rolled. I was all: "Is this it? Nothing substantial happened during the whole game." Loved the gameplay of XII though, and the massive scope of the sidequests.

clercqie 08.09.13	I think they intentionally made XIII that linear after the vastness of XII, because it was so easy to lose track of what you're doing in XII. Never actually played XIII though, because I don't have a PS3. IX had best story, but VIII had most interesting story pov of all the ones I've played. The characters really drive the plot forward in that last one, instead of just reacting to what's happening around them. X kinda did that as well, but I never liked the character's in that one as much. Really hate Seymour as a villain.

Lioness said this and wow is he right, hardest boss fight i came across in any FF game. And Advent Children IS fan service at its best, and FF IX is my favorite game ever made. And someone talked about IX being linear as fuck a while back, i have something to say about that. Although it imposes its limitations on the player, it has tons of stuff to do. I remember being a little lad and thinking "ok, i'm tired of passing the main storyline, let's go play cards" and then "tired of cards, lets explore!" (which didn't felt overwhelming as the limitations imposed were just right to make the game feel focused no matter what you did, you still had a lot to explore), then i'd go "ok so tired of exploring, let's treasure hunt with chocobos" i know i know, the card game sucked but i got the hang of it and started to really liking it. And so on, i feel like there was a lot to do in there. Also the main quest was beautiful.
