Best Of 07... Yeah.

I came up with this totally original and unique idea to make a "best of this year" list. And of course I have to throw in the obligitory "IMO", yada yada...
1Anberlin
Cities

I got this album the week it came out and have been listening to it more or less weekly since that day. It still never ceases to blow me away until the last note fades. You know how many other albums can actually do that for me? Blackwater Park.. and, uh... yeah. 2112? Maybe? You get the point. Breathtaking.
2Thrice
The Alchemy Index: Vols. I and II...

A huge step in the right direction for a band who really didn't need to change directions, the first half of Thrice's opus does not disappoint. While I find Water to be much more enjoyable than Fire, both discs are absolutely jaw-dropping.
3Porcupine Tree
Fear of a Blank Planet

I'm fairly new to this band, having been introduced to them via Opeth. That being said, I think it's safe to say this is PT's best work to date (although I can't speak for their very early albums I don't own). The only weak song is "Sleep Together", which is remarkable, even for a Prog-rock album.
4Daphne Loves Derby
Good Night, Witness Light

DLD finally put their finger squarely on the indie-rock song they were trying and failing to attain with their debut. A wonderful listen at any time, this album sports probably the best lyrics written all year (other than maybe 1's) and a wonderful amount of variety throughout it's 40-ish minutes.
5Tegan and Sara
The Con

I'm probably one of the only Tegan and Sara fans who likes this album better than their previous, but I think the dynamic Canadian duo outdid So Jealous by a long shot with this little Indie gem. Not one track worth skipping, although some are better than others.
6 Deas Vail
All the Houses Look the Same

And concluding the "indie section" of the list... Deas Vail's debut LP infiltrates a little gap between Death Cab for Cutie and Coldplay that they manage to execute perfecty, at least most of the time. Having picked up one of my favorite albums of this year for 6 bucks at Hastings, I was more than happy with this little-known band's ambitious debut.
7The Used
Lies For The Liars

Yeah, shoot me. I loved it, although not quite as much as their last two. But the fact that they didn't completely blow it, and that I held that opinion despite being determined that this was going to be terrible, was more than satisfactory. This album really loses its steam during the last 3 tracks, but other than that it's near perfect as a pop/punk/whateveryouwanttocallit listen.
8Rush
Snakes & Arrows

I'm a huge Rush fan. I own every single one of their studio albums and most of their live albums. And I was more than pleased to say this latest release completely outstrips anything they've put out since 1989. I even got to see them in concert, which made me appreciate it even more.
9Nightwish
Dark Passion Play

Annette's definitely not as good as Tarja. But that's almost okay, since everything else about this band seems to have gotten better. There's a few bombs on this CD (Amaranth, Meadows of Heaven) but the highlights more than make up for it. Master Passion Greed is simply.... sublime.
10Between the Buried and Me
Colors

I think everyone at Sputnik already knows why it's good... so I'll spare you.
