| Albums that surprised me
Unsurprising list of albums that surprised me roughly in order of surprisedness. | 6 | | Thursday No Devolucion
I listened to a few of their first releases, mostly "War All the Time", but than forgot about them. I randomly read some comment that apprently "this shits on all their other releases" (probably even here somewhere), so I was curious to hear how good this could possibly be. Even with fairly high expectations it still managed to surprise me. | 5 | | Protest the Hero Palimpsest
"Fortress" is one of my favorite albums. My entire guitar, ahem let's call it "practice", routine was trying to learn these songs for the better part of a decade (embarrassingly unsuccessful I might add). Nothing since could really touch it and delays and vocal problems didn't bode too well for Palimpsest. But they somehow came through and delivered their potentially best album. | 4 | | Windir Arntor
I'm admittedly still too lazy to properly get into black metal (any day now!), but this album, especially "Svartesmeden og Lundamyrstrollet", just blew me away on the first listen. | 3 | | ISIS Oceanic
I probably downloaded this based on some good review but could never be arsed to actually listen to it. Let's just play Hybrid Theory for a quadrillionth time. Luckily idiot past me somehow must have clicked play on it by accident and left it on in the background. I still remember slowly realizing that this is amazing and nu metal might not be the only genre, LOL! | 2 | | Between the Buried and Me The Silent Circus
Very similar story to "Oceanic" above. This started my love for anything more noisy and/or complex. It does "all makes sense" to quote "Ad a Dglgmut". | 1 | | Cynic Traced in Air
I saw this as the top album on someone's Last.fm profile next to a lot of old school metal I either never heard of or cared about at the time. I wasn't aware that this came out more recently and I was so sure it was going to be some dated metal that I listen to once and conclude that "it's not too bad I guess", right? Wrong! (said with an austrian accent). I was basically Blink-182 WTF GIF throughout the entire thing. It sounded like I accidentally downloaded something from another planet a century into the future. | |

07.16.23 | That Cynic album was better than I expected, though I haven't listened to it in several years for some reason. But that Windir album is fantastic. It gets played often. | bellovddd
07.16.23 | No Devolucion is a underrated masterpiece | GreyShadow
07.17.23 | still never finished 1 but i remember thinking it was okay/trying to like it and then last year or so that shit was blowing me away
6 definitely was a special full listen
with everything surrounding 5, it is indeed crazy that it is potentially their best album |
