Top 10 albums 2023

What a year! I don't know if it is the fact that I bought way too many vinyls or that it has been an incredible year for music (probably the former), but it was much harder to come up with a final top 10 than last year. I know I said I would start doing full reviews in 2023, but I did not find the time, let's hope 2024 won't be as crazy as this year was.
10There Will Be Fireworks
Summer Moon

There is a strange nostalgic feel surrounding this album and I don't know exactly why, probably because it reminds me of some albums I used to play when I was younger. This was my go to travelling music this year, driving and getting lost in your thought with this playing along is something special. Thanks to the community for praising this one as I would have probably skipped it if not for the praise.
9HMLTD
The Worm

A concept album about a worm swallowing England all presented under a theatrical rock opera... It had to be at least interesting. And I agree that this is one of the most inconsistent album, not in quality, but in the fact that it's getting all over the place and the continuity between songs is almost non-existent, except for the story presented. But this problem is also a positive, as you never know what to expect, you get surprised at every corner.
8Ne Obliviscaris
Exul

This album has such an epic feel to it! I was a bit thrown off by the clean vocals at first, but they are really well used and the compositions are amazing. The album opener, Equus (contender as best song of the year), really sets the tone for the rest and it just keeps building around it. This was my best progressive metal album of the year.
7Sprain
The Lamb As Effigy

This is clearly not for everyone. I'm a long time Swans fan, and for those who like the long repetitive songs with small changes and huge payoffs, you will be served with this LP. But if you don't like hearing the same loop for 10 minutes, you might need to skip this one. This has a really unique sound and an anxious feeling during the whole listen.
6Seven Impale
Summit

I admit it, I give bonus points from the start if the sound is different from the crowd. This band sounds like nothing I've heard before, so it started on a good note. A mix of Jazz fusion and progressive really well executed, never seems to make the classic experimental mistake: add too much sound just to sound weird. Everything here seems at the right place and fits well with the rest of the instruments. This is a must listen in my book.
5Phoxjaw
notverynicecream

I was hesitant to buy this one as I'm normally not big on punk, but this is so much more. This has elements from so many music genres I can't even count. There were moments that were reminding me of progressive, experimental and even new wave at times. This is a really fresh sound and I'll follow their career for sure.
4Great Falls
Objects Without Pain

I was not sure if I should listen to this one as it was not getting much attention, but when I saw Neurot records (Neurosis label), I had to jump on it as this clearly means it has to have something different in its sound. I don't know where the band took their inspiration, but we can easily feel the pain through the sound. This is music for tortured souls.
3JPEGMAFIA and Danny Brown
Scaring the Hoes

This is not a surprise to anyone, a collaboration album between Danny Brown and JPEGMAFIA was bound to be incredible. For fans of JPEGMAFIA, this is a no-brainer as this as all the glitchy/disjointed twists of his mixtapes. Danny brown adds a more reflective note to the record, and this only benefits JM's style.
2Maruja
Knocknarea

Coming from out of nowhere, this little British post-punk band releases an EP this year that made me rethink my "no EPs" rule in my top 10s. This 20 minutes of music is an energetic and jazzy masterpiece, and I can't wait to see what this band will offer in the future. I think this album is the one I talked the most about to friends as I don't see how anybody would not like it.
1Dodheimsgard
Black Medium Current

When I first heard this, I had high expectations caused by the raving reviews that made me discover it. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint one bit. This is some of the best melodic avant-garde metal I've heard, with a sound really unique to them. I have to say that it was a bit hard at first to get over the vocals as they are not the best I've heard, but they fit well in the mix when you get used to them. I don't know how many times I've listened to this one during the year, but this was the most impressive record of 2023!
