Maybe give that album you really like but don't absolutely love (or revisit often) a 3.5 instead of a 4 and so on etc. Also, I think it depends how explorative you are. Yeah, don't go out of your way to check bad music, but if you dive into a lot of 'unknowns' then you're bound to dislike some of it and as a result your average will naturally drop. Being explorative is a net positive for me, whatever some of the results may be.
IsisScript80 04.21.23	It's a derpy computer calculation that doesn't take into account any real-world nuance. I think that at best, it can serve as a rough guide in regards to staff reviewers whose job it is to listen and report back to things they wouldn't actually like--sometimes subjecting themselves to punishing crap for the sake of a relaying that informationto others in a (hopefully) balanced way. That onus isn't on most listeners. Time is precious, and I generally do not want to subject myself to things I get the feeling I'd dislike, just for the sake of giving it a "1.0", just to boost my Objectively score on Sput. If I give the 45-60 minutes of my life to an album, it'd have to interest me enough in a way that I feel would be ultimately pleasurable or life-enhancing. The only vague benefit of seeking out shit is to sometimes reinforce notions of what is "good" in a wider, relative sense, but I personally find the desire for that rare. Basically, most albums I select to listen to, I go in wanting (in Sput terms) a 3.5 or above. Generally, I feel it's a waste of my time alive to actively seek crap.
Demon of the Fall 04.21.23	sometimes you need to challenge yourself, I mean there are plenty of albums which I find are 'easy to avoid' but there's also lots of highly rated stuff that's outside of my comfort zone that doesn't always end up appealing (hence this results in low ratings) I agree that setting out to hear music you hate is largely pointless, yet you can still get 'something out of' a mostly negative experience, it depends on your perspective. Also, I'm probably weird in that I can't accurate predict what I'll actually enjoy in a lot of cases - my taste is all over the shop

I just make the distinction when it comes to the specific notion of "Objectivity Ratings", where one feels naturally compelled to find things that are 1.0s just to balance it. Nothing wrong with broadening horizons... finding that you like new things (or not) and rating accordingly, but that's the kind of real-world nuance I was referring to above, that this rating system isn't built to keep up with.

Demon of the Fall 04.21.23	I just didn't like looking at my ratings and having 6 zillion 'excellent' albums I never actually listen to etc. for me every genre has a limit to the number of artists / albums I actually need and if there's nothing much to separate certain things stylistically, then I'll 'cut' some from the group of essentials I'm far from finished, this is an ongoing project I feel tragic having typed that out now. Let's get back to saying how this doesn't matter, lol

If I rated everything I listened to, it would definitely be skewed in the other direction. It’s pointless dawg except for those select few who 5 everything they like and are obviously not objective

Using my tastes as an example: As genres go, I'm not majorly keen on Jazz or Classical... I can appreciate the craft and artistry I hear in stuff that are considered classics of the genre, but to slap a rating on them? WTF would I put? "2.0 - Poor"... reflecting to the real-world likelihood of me returning to play the records again, or "4.0 - Excellent" (or above,) directly relating to the level of craft, despite my own tastes/genre preferences? A rating is redundant in this regard.

On the other hand I don't believe in attempting to be objective and measuring 'craft' or 'skill' unless I'm actually enjoying what I'm hearing.

bighubbabuddha 04.21.23	the problem i have with the objectivity rating is that I like to 5 albums that I think are classic/timeless but that almost always reduces my objectivity so i don't pay the obj rating much attention. Like take TPAB or Ziggy Stardust. Classics that are 5/5 in my eyes but wreck my obj rating so yeah it annoys me too dude but for a more specific reason.
