Everybody, not just the US ignored what was going on in Spain. And frankly, as stupid as it sounds, Franco was smart fucker, he knew how to drum up support. The Spanish people were still behind him and us butting in and calling them out would have not gone over well. It was the best case scenario for us. I'm not saying it was a good thing, but the alternative wouldn't have helped anybody. All it would've done is piss off Spain and make us lose a potential ally that we unfortunately needed. It was an enemy of my enemy relationship.

Couldn't the obvious alternative be not to give military and economic assistance to one of the most brutal dictators of the 21st century?
